WEDNESDAY 4/27

(GAY) Night of the Comet

Have you noticed how damn gay the Comet is lately? Lady. And no, I don’t mean that some secret commando unit of ninja drag queens unleashed a tsunami of bleach and pink bubble bath on the place and then set upon it with a hard-wire brush and their book of swatches—although that’s a pretty stellar idea. Heavens no! The ambience is still skuzzy as Ruth Buzzi’s fuzzy, don’t you fret. (I SAID DON’T FRET!) It’s the events that happen in the Comet that are getting gayer than a bucket of Glee. The Dark Tour kickoff, for example. And the Snackhole revival! And other things! It’s a full-on ‘mo-vasion, and I’m for it, of course—the aggressive gaying-up of everything. So! Tonight, some of my very favorite and gayest things are forced right down the Comet’s throat (take it!!), including NODDY!, whom I love, as you damn well know. What can be said that I haven’t said before about this sexy little man band? Nothing, that’s what! And now they’re gathering a following that can only be described as “I’LL FUCKING KILL YOU, I’M THE ORIGINAL FAN, THEY WERE MINE FIRST!” Also playing are GLITTERBANG!, whom I am also quite fond of. DJ NARK! will DJ Narkishly, and DANGEROUS PONIES! will do a few sets, too, but they are from Philadelphia, and I’ve never heard of them. So. Sue me. GAY IT UP! GAY IT UP! Comet, 9 pm, $7, 21+.

FRIDAY 4/29

REAL WOMEN, PROBABLY NOT;
REAL PERIL, FOR SURE

Yay! Some of the sparkliest Diamelles in the cracked and sparkly thrift-store tiara that is fringier-than-fringe theater have stitched together this maniac Bride of Frankenstein from the most melodramatic of Lifetime movies ever. Tina Yothers movies. Meredith Baxter-Birny movies! It’s a draggy late-night bon mot of mad, tragic, drinky, pukey, divorced-y Women in Peril, written by Joel Steinpreis (who’s been called “an unsung comic genius”—by ME) and Craig Trolli (who’s been called lots of things). Directed by Jason Sharp! Annex Theatre, 11 pm, $10, all ages.
