Every single day I wake up with a song in my head, but the Marked Men‘s “Fortune” has been the first one up for three days now. It’s fast and sweet and bright and definitely my favorite from their 2009 album Ghosts—the perfect album for jet-leggedly waking up at 4 a.m. to make the worst brownies ever.

Since you asked, I don’t even particularly love brownies. They just sounded like something that would be warm and maybe easier to make than the cheesecake I actually wanted to make (until I learned cheesecake needs at least four hours to cool, pfff). Since I have this obnoxious neighbor across the alley who—I am not joking—gets drunk, smokes cigarillos on his porch, and blasts The Gotye Song™ on the regular, I felt that earned me the right to turn up this song and album to top volume while singing to my cat and getting super pumped up to make these awesome brownies that would help pass the boring nightmare hours before work.

But fuck, I have no idea what happened. I did some fancy kitchen moves I was quite proud of at the time—double-boilering chocolate and coconut oil together, adding espresso, using extra-dark cocoa powder and other things a lifestyle blogger would approve of. The batter took forever and looked and tasted great, the pan was sufficiently greased, the oven was at the right temperature, but when I took the pan out, it was A SHEET OF GREASY PUMICE THAT NO BLADE COULD PENETRATE. WHYYYYYYYYY???

Um, so there you have it. Enjoy this song while making me some cheesecake.
