HAIM’S RETRO-FITTED YACHT-ROCK ANTHEMS

(Paramount) Back in 1976, a rock band, facing interpersonal woes and mounting studio pressure, snorted a heap of cocaine and made an album. That album was called Rumours, and that band was named Fleetwood Mac. It went on to sell over 45 million copies and is considered one of the best records of all time. Why bring any of this up? Because to talk about Haim (comprised of the three Haim sisters and a drummer) is to reckon with the legacy of that album. Haim’s gauzy female vocals, their subtle-yet-effective bass lines, even the reverb on their electric guitars pulse with the DNA of Rumours, that breezy melancholy, that sun-burst bittersweetness. Lucky for all of us, then, that it’s more than mere pastiche. The ladies have cleverly updated the mid-tempo yacht-rock of yesteryear for the ’10s, with electro-pop beats and slinky synths. It’ll be interesting to see how Haim follows up their crowd-pleasing debut; things got pretty damn rocky for Fleetwood Mac after Rumours. KYLE FLECK

LONG LIVE THE MURDER CITY DEVILS

(Showbox at the Market) For 18 years, local garage-punk misfits Murder City Devils have been keeping fans guessing as to their lineup, the state of their existenceโ€”active, retired, or on hiatusโ€”and whether they’ll ever release another record. After breaking up in 2001, and then playing gigs from 2006-2010, including appearances at Capitol Hill Block Party and Sasquatch, they only raised more questions. This month, they provide a few answers, starting with a self-released album, The White Ghost Has Blood on Its Hands, and culminating in a West Coast tour. In other words, they’re back for the attack, so smoke ’em while you’ve got ’em, because who knows how long this white-hot burst of activity will last? With Corey J. Brewer and Deep Creep featuring Andrea Zollo. KATHY FENNESSY
