(Neumos) As half of Houston rap superstars UGK, Bun B boasts a raspy flow that’s played a huge role in the rise and eventual domination of Southern rap, plying a soulful, dusky brand of pimped-out, gritty-realistic storytelling. After long-time partner Pimp C was sentenced to prison in the early 2000s (and his subsequent untimely death), Bun B went hard on a successful and creatively rejuvenated solo career, lending his signature bellow to tracks by scene bigwigs like Mike Jones and Paul Wall. His 2010 album, Trill O.G., received a (maybe still coveted?) five-mic review from The Source, and contains some of the finest, funkiest Texas-bred rap to come out in the last decade. The follow-up, Trill O.G.:The Epilogue, does a nice job showcasing the new tide of UGK-indebted Southern rap artists, hilariously named opener Kirko Bangz among them. Trill, indeed.
