Still stumbling through a bewildered post-election-night daze last
Thursday night, it was time to get out of the house, brave some
treacherous weather, and see a show. Arriving at the Capitol Hill
warehouse space, there was beautiful, orchestrated tropicalia wafting up the rain-slicked stairs to the entrance; it was a surprise
to see that all this sound was not being made by a large band but by
only one man. Seattle’s henari Nannon is the project of Ian
Ferguson
, a brilliant graphic artist and perennial Stranger
Poster of the Week honoree. Onstage, he uses one of those
complicated-looking Dr. Dre samplers and a couple of vocal effects to
create sensational splashes of sound, ranging from somber, spiraling
symphonic pieces to drum-heavy dance music. Alternately hunching over
his elaborate music-making box and flailing around singing with vocals
reminiscent of ex-Panther project The Planet The, henari Nannon uses
his simple setup of sampler and microphone to summon a full-band
sound
that would make hiphop’s originators proud and maybe a little
weirded out. Though the bodies in the crowd remained cold and wet from
the rain, henari Nannon’s inviting beats warmed hearts like a towel
right out of the dryer.
