There’s been a lot of talk—but very little public polling—about a possible run for Congress by Dennis Kucinich in Washington’s 1st District.
That all changed on May 24, when Public Policy Polling released a survey of more than 1,000 Washington voters who were asked about the possibility that Kucinich, who seems likely to lose his Ohio seat due to redistricting next year, might try to stay in Congress by making a run from this state.
“It really doesn’t matter whether Kucinich moves to Washington or not,” the firm wrote in a blog post. “He’s not going to get elected there next year.”
The numbers: Just 12 percent of Washingtonians think Kucinich should run for Congress in this state next year, according to PPP. And among Democrats—that’s among Democrats
—just 22 percent think Kucinich should move here and run.
That fits with what Dwight Pelz, chair of Washington State Democrats, has been saying. “Washingtonians are not going to be receptive to a sitting congressman from Ohio filing for office in our state,” he told the New York Times on May 23, the day before the poll came out. If Kucinich runs in the 1st District, where incumbent Democratic congressman Jay Inslee is likely to leave his seat to make a run at the governor’s mansion, “we could easily lose that district,” Pelz said.
Looks like the polling backs Pelz up. ![]()

Too bad. I’d vote for him, vegan breakfast foods and all.
Thanks for this and your previous article on Kucinich, Eli.
Kucinich sure would get my vote. That the Democrats don’t back him, when he actually stands for the principles and actions the Demos say they believe it, shows the very small difference that there is between the demos and republicans.
@ 2:
Most Democrats want to win elections, not lose them. Jim McDermott stands for most if not all of the things Kucinich stands for, and Democrats vote for him.
Does voting for McDermott “show the very small difference there is between the demos and Republicans?” Of course it doesn’t. The very thought is absurd.
What a candidate stands for is only part of the equation. McDermott has earned the support of Washington voters after years of public service. Kucinich has not done JACK SHIT for Washington. Why the hell should I or any other Democrat want him here? He couldn’t win one single District in this state.
More anti-Kucinich verbal diarrhea from Eli. Dude give it a rest. Many Democrats would change their minds if he actually campaigned here.
I’ll vote for him if given the chance. He’s someone worth keeping in office, Eli and friends’ ad hominem nonsense aside.
