In Case You Missed It: McGinn is budgeting for no new police hires.
Man sentenced: An ex-Microsoft employee was sentenced to three years for embezzling $459,000 from the company.
Only 21 Years Old: “Pfc. Andrew Holmes was sentenced to seven years in prison Friday for murdering an Afghan teenager last year, despite his assertion that he was following a higher-ranking soldier’s order when he shot the boy.”
Heads Up: NASA confirms that pieces of the downed satellite have penetrated the atmosphere but “It is not clear exactly where the pieces might have landed.”
Never Thought I’d Say “Church, Please!” Non-violent offenders in Bay Minette, Alabama will now be able to choose church over jail.
Gasp! Shock! President Medvedev of Russia announced he will step down after one term and asked Vladimir Putin to run for president.
Yemen: At least 17 people died during a government assault on protesters.
Libya: “Forces loyal to Libya’s provisional government launched a renewed assault Saturday on the besieged coastal city of Surt, Moammar Kadafi’s hometown and a holdout bastion of support for the ousted leader.”

Yawn.
@1: I’m okay with this.
…
Who wants to carry the torch of feeling sorry for people with the last name Santorum?
Church or jail? Does the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster count?
@3 I will take up this mantle. I will bear this burden.
@ 3, some boob who usually tells Dan to “grow up” can do that. I can’t remember his screen name at the moment.
See ya, Braindrip.
Matt, that’s swearengen, and he’d be perfect for the job. He clearly has nothing better to contribute.
People can choose to go to church for a year instead of jail?
Um, isn’t that a violation of the state instituting religion?
I mean, unless they can choose any church they want? Like, the “church of sitting on their couch watching tv?”
@8 I wonder what some yahoo Alabama judge would think of somebody choosing a Mosque?
I would be a little more sympathetic to the soldier’s claims of innocence and his repeated denials of “murder”, even as he accepted his equivalent of a plea bargain, if he hadn’t kept a “souvenir finger” of the boy he killed. A phrase I wish I hadn’t heard.
See ya, Raindrop @1. You’re wrong, you’re always wrong, and you’re a prick about it most of the time, but your exit is gracious and deserves the same in return. Compared to more recent trolling entries like Seattleboob, you’re a paragon. But you’ll be back. We always come back.
@10 My goodness. I didn’t know that finger detail. Yeah, war–nice way to express that inner sociopath.
Only 21 years old and he gets to live his life–that teenager doesn’t. Just remember there’s about a million Troy Davis’ out there that you’ll never hear about.
So long, raindrop. Take care.
@10: Most do come back, but some seem able to actually leave. We haven’t heard from Canuck in forever. At least when you left, you stayed on Questionland, so people knew where to find you.
That elitist, librul, first amendmenty type stuff doesn’t apply to Alabama.
Oh and, farewell raindrop. Good that you were able to recognize the costs of trolling and decide to step away.
@ 1…but what will we use to get rid of the stain ?
*tears up*
peace and strength with honor..
Bars in Bay Minette have been handed a wonderful business opportunity: hire a universal life minister for the bar and start serving communion.
“Never Thought I’d Say “Church, Please!” Non-violent offenders in Bay Minette, Alabama will now be able to choose church over jail.”
Not that I’m planning to commit offenses in Alabama, but I think I’d choose “shoot me now and skip the blindfold” over church.
Farewell, raindrop. There but for the grace of god, a mental debility, and thin moral fiber go I.
Gus, you are awesome.
UARS mission is to help man…not to destroy man…UARS is not perfect…I am not Kirak…I am Kirk…UARS is wrong…you are not perfect!
UARS not perfect…must destroy..destroy…error..ERROR…EERRRRRROOOORRRRRR!!!
With raindrop gone, Slog will be more of an echo chamber. But that’s okay. I don’t mind echo chambers as I’m hard of hearing.
It’s unfortunate that he was put in a position where he was given orders like that, and the commanding officer should ALSO be punished for giving those orders, but “just following orders” is not a legitimate defense, and hasn’t been for a good sixty years.
“Rather than face the stress directly, I took a path that would sabotage my future and tarnish my past achievements.”
Yep, he’s a Microsoft employee.
Let me qualify that statement as it’s not an anti MS software troll. I worked at Microsoft in core development for three years. This answer from an MS employee is not surprising, given the corporate culture of passive aggressive tyranny, and race to the middle.
Well gee, $500,000 is nothing compared to the criminality of the corporation he works for…and Bill Gates walks free.
Really don’t see the problem here.
@26: It’s not like Microsoft is Exxon-Mobile you know. And Bill, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation – you know about that don’t you? Where is this coming from? Or are you just really mad at Steve – he’s the CEO as you recall and Bill remains Chairman.
@27 it’s the blind corporate hatred …. usually masked in something else, at least they are being honest about the hatred here.
FYI, #26 …. B&MGF donate huge amounts to the local shelter and housing system, as does Apple. Theft is wrong, you cannot argue that.
Oh, and to be clear, I don’t like MS products, actually think they’re just annoying myself, but that’s my personal taste, I like Linux/Unix more. But I’m grateful that Bill is here in western Washington, many hundreds of once homeless people and low income workers are also. We have something that was made possible because of the “rich” people in this state (even BofA has made healthy donations and they aren’t from Washington) … so, unless the man who stole almost $500K from MS donated the whole thing to a private run social service, he deserves to lose his freedom.
Raindrop, we’ve locked horns more times than I can count, but as Fnarf said, your exit is a gracious one. I understand the desire to step away as well.
Best of luck to you and may you find a way to reconcile your values without selling your soul in the process.

it seems her husband got sick of her whoring around on slog…..
I’d have more sympathy for the soldier if I hadn’t seen the photos of them smiling and jovially fucking around with the corpse, or if they hadn’t been planning to kill an Afghani, any Afghani, for literally weeks in a fake staged attack, or if they hadn’t done this sort of thing other times (fake attacks in order to murder Afghans), or if they hadn’t passed the photos of the killings around to everyone, in violation of US Armed Forced laws and laws of human decency. They’re punks and they get what they deserve.
Hmmm no one got this upset when Mr. Poe vanished or any of the other old timers. I think it’s just Will and Fnarf who are left of that group now.
But Raindrop I’d say good bye but frankly I never found anything you said worth remembering let alone making the claim I would be sorry to see you go. So go and don’t let the door hit you where the good lord split you.
@32 – Cato, I think “getting upset” is putting it a bit too strong. As for Poe, I still blame Chelsea Alvarez-Bell.
I think the only person I got upset over was Elswinger. I still miss his comments here.
