You’ve Got Until Tuesday: VOTE. VOTE. VOTE.
In Case You Missed It: “Occupy Seattle is kicking ass.”
Add This To The “Con” List for Climate Change: The warming climate is threatening northwest pines by bringing them into contact with tiny destructive beetles.
In Des Moines: Police are looking for gunmen who shot a 24-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman. The woman died in the hospital.
Suck It, Gov. Kasich: Voters in Ohio are likely to vote down a union-destroying bill. Show ’em how it’s done, Ohio!
Cain-Gingrich Lovefest: The two book sellers, I mean, presidential candidates had a boring 90-minute debate in Texas. Tickets were $150 and the event sold out. Were attendees promised free pizza?
It’s A Slippery Slope, Cuba: Raúl Castro abolished the ban on buying and selling houses.
Meanwhile, In Syria: 28 people were reportedly killed by government security forces in the city of Homs.
Holy Shit: Eight inmates were killed and two police officers were taken hostage during a prison riot in Venezuela.
For your listening pleasure, I present you John Darnielle of the Mountain Goats professing his love for unions:

You linked to the primary endorsements in the VOTE VOTE VOTE link xD

Did you all remember to set your clocks back an hour?
I recommend a Guardian essay today by Tim Minchin about his experience touring the U.S. with what he calls our culture of “über-affirmation” – capped by a stop in Texas you won’t want to miss. Here’s a bit from the middle:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/stage/2011/nov…
You still haven’t fixed the link… what are we not paying you for anyway?
Power in a Union…is The Stranger now going to unionize? If so AWESOME!!! We need more unions and union members!!
@ 6, what the fuck do you and your fellow dips think you’re proving with these posts?
@7, sorry you hate unions.
@4 Thanks, gus! That was great.
Seriously, you’re only learning about global warming and the destructive beetle issue now, and only from the Seattle Times? I searched and I didn’t find any earlier references to this in The Stranger.
Joel Connelly wrote about this two and half years ago:
http://www.seattlepi.com/local/connelly/…
and
http://www.seattlepi.com/local/connelly/…
It’s good to see this kind of coverage being picked up by The Stranger, but you (and the Seattle Times) are a bit late on this particular issue. Keep it up though.
The Stranger set its clock back eighty days, apparently, going by the endorsement link.
Publicola reheats its August endorsements, preferring not to edit out statements by never-made-it-past-the-primary candidates, King County Voters Guide isn’t updated to include endorsement information… I guess the Stranger is trying to keep up with the civic “retro” theme.
I remind you, from a link to the blog post of a man on The Stranger Elect…, that The Stranger endorsed a candidate who orchestrated the proposed Seattle Schools policy rule to give high school principals censorship/editorial control over student newspapers.
I wonder if that man has mailed in his ballot yet.
@ 8, no point whatsoever? That’s what I thought.
@12
I guess I haven’t been paying attention, but I haven’t noticed a torrent of comments about unionizing The Stranger.
As to the point of such comments, it seems kind of blindingly obvious to me that the point would be that it’s at best a little lazy on the part Stranger writers to adopt a pro-union stance when they’re not doing the hard work of actually trying to unionize their own workplace.
What a strange earthquake. Oklahoma? 5.6? It seems to me the whole surface of the planet is realigning. I’m surely no expert, but I do find all these odd quakes more than a little disturbing. Especially with Mt. Rainier rumbling, too.
@14 you can subscribe to the USGS earthquake alerts. I have my alert set at quakes of a 4.0 and larger magnitude. There’s hella earthquakes, mostly around Polynesia/New Guinea part of the earth. I know jokingly Californians are blase about eq’s but they get a lot more than I would have guessed. The Aleutian Islands too. Crazy ring of fire anyhow.
@13: Somehow a pundits union doesn’t seem all that practical.
I wouldn’t mind more deciduous trees in the northwest.
Here’s a pretty one turning red in back of my apartment:

Marry me, John Darnielle.
No? OK then, what are you doing tonight between 10 and midnight?
@15 Thanks!
Sorry, let me turn the furnace up for this blasted cold real quickly-
Now, what was that about global warming again?
Idiots.
Man that Amazon Prime is good.
I finally ponied up the $79 today, and started watching this documentary about Yellowstone. Crystal clear HD. And now I can watch movies on my Linux desktop (Adobe Flash standard plugin).
I also got The God Delusion from the Lending Library.
I’m a voracious reader of true crime, which can be cheap but even at $3 and $6 a pop I’d be eating up my media budget pretty fast.
Here’s something else cool and completely unrelated only interesting to geekazoid media electronics folk. Wireless HDMI!

@20 BAHHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHHAHA (gets up out of chair)
Did you seriously just make the “I’m too fucking retarded to understand the difference betwixt climate and weather” argument? Your stupidity is more evident with each character you type, Bigot.
@ 20, pwnwd by 22.
@ 13, there have been a lot of those, especially from Cato in Seattle.
@23 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-F8EO3qO…
@20 Really? Geez. Purposefully uneducated is more sad than anything. But no more so than when used to make a point.
22
There’s a difference?
What?
Nothing about the homosexual child abuse scandal at Penn State?
Powerful Liberal institutions abusing boys and higher up authorities covering it up?
Doesn’t Danny “Protector of The Children” Savage need to start a Liberal Academic Watch?
What?
Nothing about the kid suspended from school for hugging a classmate in the hallway?
Where is Danny’s outrage?
Why are the Flying Monkeys sitting around grooming each others’ assholes when there are emails to be fired off?
.
btw What is the latest on the KickAss ACLU lawsuit against Alice HS for abusing the Kissing Cheerleader?
Danny said Alice would be getting a phone call from his heroes at the ACLU.
Update?
14
disturbing?
you ain’t seen nothing yet, you filthy heathen.
its the end of days and Someone is Angry.
be afraid.
be. very. afraid.
29
LOL. On Judgment Day, things aren’t going to turn out for you the way you think.
I almost wished I believed, just so I could be there to watch it…
@22
As a matter of fact I do.
Since the Global Warming morons used to be the Imminent Ice Age morons (same ‘scientists’ and all!) and now have to call their brand of bullshit Climate Change- since the earth isn’t actually, you know, warming- I do.
You can keep the personal insults for someone who cares about them, or at least marginally resembles them. Or not, since it really doesn’t impact me one way or the other.
Now, if you’ll excuse me I’m about to alter the London Broil section of one outer cow into an inner cow.
@25
As your posts exemplify this tragedy to perfection, I’ll yield to your obvious expertise in the matter.
@32 At least I’m willing to look at the evidence, the mountain of evidence, assembled by hundreds of brilliant minds and come to the conclusion that global warming is a very real possibility. You, on the other hand, think having to turn up the thermostat is all the evidence you need to refute global warming. That’s just sad.
When hundreds of brilliant minds tell me what my experience and my senses tell me is bullshit, I’ll go with my experience and senses every time.
Particularly when if I buy their particular brand of alarmist nonsense I’d have to believe the following-
The earth is already past the point of no return for the number of people on it to live in any kind of industrialized society and do anything about CATASTROPHIC GLOBAL WARMING!!!!!!! We’d have to radically reduce the number of people on the planet, or return to a pre-industrialized state to maintain the current climate, Not even to return to Al Gore’s specific notion of what makes an ideal climate, just to maintain the PLANETARY EMERGENCY the good Rev. Dr. Gore has diagnosed.
That’s if you accept the chicken little theory, or global warming. If, in fact, you worship at the Ecumenical Church of Gore. Fortunately, I don’t. Fortunately the sky isn’t in fact falling. But hey, you probably worried about Y2K as well, didn’t you?
@ 34, that’s what defines a fool.
@9, you’re welcome – I really loved that one. Hell of a guy.
I don’t know how global warming skeptics can get beyond the physics of it all. Solar Radiation (sunshine) comes into our atmosphere and stays inside if it cannot get back out.
Impediments of the solar radiation’s escape include: water vapor, gases that absorb infrared radiation (eg: carbon dioxide and chlorofluorocarbons), soaking up & slow release of heat energy (concrete jungles).
Weather or not you want believe it’s human caused or if we’re entering back into an inter glacial warming period could be up for debate. But the analogy of our atmosphere being like a green house cannot be denied. Maybe our frame of reference should change and realize that the world IS the green house, and we’re just replicating it to grow tomatoes in our back yard.
@6, 8, & 13,
I’m all for unions, but from a practical sense, unions really only make sense in a couple of situations: when there is a large labor force and they are being mistreated in some way by management.
The Stranger has what, maybe a dozen writers on their staff? Plus a handful of behind the scenes production people? I would be greatly surprised if there were more than 50 employees of the entire company, top to bottom, including part-timers and interns. Hardly enough to warrant a union to institute collective bargaining.
@36 Still kicking myself for not going to see the 2nd show he did here as well, where apparently he did “White Wine in the Sun” and lead the audience in singing “Hallelujah.” I really, really wanted to hear “White Wine” live.
@37: You’re wasting your breath trying to convince a Free Market cultist about climate change, or indeed about any negative consequences associated with Business Being Done. It’s against their religion to believe in externalities.
@34 – What does your experience and senses tell you about 1) the coral bleaching epidemic in the S. Pacific?, 2) the northward migration of plant and insect species due to their preferred temperatures changing?, 3) the melting glaciers worldwide?, 4) and epic algea and jellyfish blooms ocurring around the world? All facts, all with a very clear cause in the slight but distinct increase in basal temperatures. Oh, and did you know the oceans are rising measurably too? I wonder what would cause that? More rain perhaps? Hmmm.
All these comments and no mention that this song is a Billy Bragg cover?
SB’s not going to really budge on the climate change deal. People like that will always say they don’t believe data. What you should wonder is how you all are going to reconcile your principles here when your “practical progressives” approve Keystone XL.
I know, Jimmy Carter and all that.
@SeattleBlues:
You remind me of a guy.
Did you ever go by the tag DeaconBlues on a different site?
@41: Yes, but would enacting cap and trade laws for carbon tax credits have any impact? Or would they hurt the economy for only minuscule or theoretical affect? That’s the real debate.
Fact: A few billion years ago the climate changed and humans evolved as a result of it.
Myth: Climate scientists are not paid for by large corporations out to sell their product.
Wonder how Bailo/unregistered/Phoebe on NE 79th/KittenKoder/Seattleblues decides which nom de merde to troll under from hour to hour on Slog.
This morning NPR had a nice story about the HPV vaccine and boys.
The story pointed out that oral cancers used to stem from tobacco use but now are tied to sexual behaviors.
In fact, most of the things Danny promised America’s teens and Bristol Palin were 100% FOOLPROOF and SAFE give kids anal and oral cancers.
Good to see Danny is watching out for the children…….
New airline flights from the US to Cuba announced today too.
@45 depends.
@34: Do you accept scientific explanations for the workings of magnets? Or gravity? Do you accept that atoms exist? Do you accept that relativistic effects happen (and if your wedding band is made of gold, you should)?
@46:
>implying that evolution wasn’t going on without a change in climate
Confirmed for non-scientist.
