  2. Regarding the super committee: how about cutting military spending? There is a “line in the sand” which no Republican or Democrat has crossed.

  3. “Layla” is great, with those almost-out-of-human-hearing solos, but if you want to hear the best thing Allman ever did, listen to the second part of “Mountain Jam” on “Eat A Peach”. Specifically, the guitar break after the bass solo. That’s from the same concerts as their “Live at Fillmore East”, all of which is impossibly intimately recorded and astonishingly played, in some of the weirdest time signatures in rock. But nothing stands out like Duane’s fizzing, zizzing guitar. Bonus: no Clapton.

Among his other charms he used to regularly go to the pub near his house, drink an entire bottle of brandy (or two) and then invite everyone in the pub back to his house for more. It’s OK, Patti will cook for us all! Clapton does not come off well in her book (neither does George).

  7. It is better to have the Supercommitteeeeeee “fail” to reach agreement and cut the military budget, and have the Republicans attempt to reconcile the no new taxes pledge with the “increase” in the military budget (red state welfare).

  8. What turd even thought up the term “supercommittee”? It’s like the assinine media term “supermegastar…blahblahfuckingblah” like anyone but a thirteen year old is impressed.

  11. Massively depressed by the NPR story this morning on the supercalamity. I was okay with the automatic spending cuts because it seemed to finally mean the military would get significantly whacked, but was reminded that

    A) the dems have already agreed to massive entitlement cuts if some kind of settlement is cobbled together to prevent the trigger,

    B) the repugs are now mumbling about “some kind” of revenue enhancement as long as they get to keep the Bush tax cuts (dems roll over in 3..2..1..),

    C) even if the trigger is tripped, nothing happens until 2013, and

    D) the trigger is a Nerf bat—Congress can and would do all kinds of rule changes to neuter the effects.

    It’s all kabuki theatre in advance of the elections. None of it will make a damned bit of difference.

  12. @11 Possible silver lining, depending on just how fucked up/stupid their final decision is, will be a national topic for OWS to address and protest. A great time to contrast these supposed necessary austerity measures with our real problems.

The tip-off to me that Murray isn’t sincere (at best) or totally lost (at worst) is when she discusses “millionaires.” Our democracy wasn’t corrupted by individuals, and individuals aren’t the movers & shakers behind the scenes, no matter how much the Randian Teabaggers scream about it. We’re being subsumed by the GroupThink of corporations. America is being governed by the corporations, made up of people who choose not to think for themselves, but acquiesce to the desires of the corporation.

  18. @13: The word “corporation” is the silly putty word of the decade, certainly for OWS. It is malleable to fit any of the causal to profound talking points by those who feel that most Americans are too stupid to know what’s going on. It often goes hand in hand with conspiracy theorists.

  21. I think the protestors in Occupy Wall Street would take a bath, but they’re worried Newt will loot their Social Security and Medicare funds while they’re taking the bath, and use the money to buy more non-productive jewelry for his mistresses and wives.
