Craving another Republican debate? You’re in luck. ABC News is hosting a debate in Iowa at 6:00 pm. Check out the live Slog.

House Fire On Queen Anne: The fire, which was so dangerous that firefighters were pulled from the building, killed one man. He is believed to be the homeowner.

Food Fight! Alki Fish & Crab Co. and Marination Mobile are duking it out (via signatures) over who gets to use the space in Seacrest Boathouse. The Parks & Rec Department awarded the space to Marination Mobile, but Alki Fish & Crab Co. has a petition going, and supporters will be rallying today at noon in support.

I Would Probably Put Mental Health Services Before Money: A government task force in North Carolina is trying to figure out how to compensate victims of the state’s eugenics program which sterilized 7,600 people between 1933 and 1977: “This week, the task force set some priorities. Money was the most important thing to offer victims, followed by mental health services.”

Congressional Republicans Take Obstinate To A Whole New Level: They’re giving up their recess just so they can prevent Obama from making recess appointments.

Occupy The Russian Election! At least 50,000 people protested alleged election fraud on an island near the Kremlin, in what BBC is calling the biggest protests since the fall of the USSR.

Speaking Of Post-Election Unrest: Democratic Republic of the Congo’s president Joseph Kabila declared himself the winner of elections. Opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi has also declared himself the winner. According to Human Rights Watch, 18 people have already been killed in violence surrounding the election.

Nobel Peace Prize: Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Leymah Gbowee (a Liberian activist), and Tawakkul Karman (an opposition journalist in Yemen) accepted the joint prize today.

“I urge my sisters, and my brothers, not to be afraid,” Sirleaf said in her Nobel lecture. “Be not afraid to denounce injustice, though you may be outnumbered. Be not afraid to seek peace, even if your voice may be small. Be not afraid to demand peace.”

  1. Obama opposes Homosexual “Marriage”.

    Just like Santorum.

    But don’t despair;
    fanboys;
    word is he is pushing a big ol’ brick of a FlipFlop turd out on this one.

    Be patient…….

  2. Republicans are horrible people: Cowardly, completely without ethics, and likely to clog up your plumbing and stink up your bathroom if you let them use it.

    When I have Repulicans over, I always use paper and plastic for any meal service, hide the good liquor and the cat, and make them walk up to the 76 station if they have to use the restroom.

  3. While one might think that mental health services would be prioritized above money, when someone has suffered a greivous wrong doing, they seek financial compensation. That and an apology. There are not many instances in which a victim is awarded mental health services. I would guess that the task force is under the advisement of a legal team.

    Nothing is going to make this right. But it feels squicky to try to throw money at it to make it better.

  4. @3: My experience is a little different. My liberal/Democrat friends did not have the courtesy to send Thank You notes or call me to say thank you for Thanksgiving dinner. My conservative/Republican friend sent a very charming Thank You note.

  5. Democraps, of course, shit in public parks.
    When they are not shitting in the middle of the street.
    When they are not shitting in their partners mouths….

  6. Ah, Phoebe @9, having people over does not count as hospitality if the host proves eager to resent anyone who doesn’t follow up properly. Politics aside, I like to invite people who are at least a little bit rascally, since nothing is duller than a houseful of people all wanting to be approved of. From the likes of them, a card or call afterward is welcome but never expected, and certainly never demanded..

  7. @12: Yes, information wants to be free! Everyone should provide all your entertainment for FREE! And ads are just a tool of the corporate oligarchy to keep you oppressed by having to endure ads on your pricey iPhone.

  8. @15: Not necessarily. Via the desktop adblocker removes all or nearly all external ads. I haven’t looked into some sort of adblock add on for the android browser I use.

    And at least on the full site with ads I don’t see ads for things like Kesley Grammer’s new TV show.

  9. most symbian browsers do not ever permit ads. Seems our euro buddies have a better philosophy when it comes to cookies. Mobile browsing is much more fast, reliable and nicer looking than most pages viewed on i phones. Having an i phone is kinda like having cable. You pay more and expose yourself to more ads and shitty content.

  10. lesseee.. phoebe’s house or cat’s ?.. oughta be a slog poll
    ..but for my money cat wins because of the tastefully bangin decor and her generous use of concepts like crudites, hor’d’ouevres, canapes, aperitfis, cocktails and after dinner treats.. phobe prolly micros those holiday safeway quiche aappetizers and calls it a day

  11. Good riddance to the alki crab co. They have terrible food, terrible service, they’re way too expensive and they aren’t open for water taxi customers in the morning.

  12. Phoebe dear, I would hope they’d send a card – preferably with a check to cover the roto-rooter bill . (make sure it clears. Republicans are notorious check bouncers)

    And needless to say, you, Riz and the whole gang are more than welcome at Chez Vel-DuRay anytime. Just call first.

  13. @Republican principled stands-

    It’s one of those eternally hilarious things for me that far left democraps are shocked, shocked they tell you! when conservatives oppose their stupid notions in Congress.

    This may surprise you folks but the opposition- wait for it- opposes. It’s in the name, for goodness sake. That your president is an incompetent who can’t lead is hardly the fault of those who clearly told him they wouldn’t help him lead the country the wrong way.

    @Ms. Vel Duray

    I can’t imagine a rational Republican bothering with your company for an entire evening, so I’ll assume you’re statements to be hypothetical.

    Here’s an idea though! Check with the folks at Seattle Central about who makes the better guest, whiny liberals camping on lawns or productive Republicans who understand the duties of a guest. (Hint- cleaning human feces out of your lawn on a rainy afternoon isn’t something I’ve had to do, but the good folks at Seattle Central get to do that today. Whom do you imagine they’re wholeheartedly cursing, Republicans or Democrats at this moment?)

  14. I think it’s paternalistic to offer mental health services to the victims of the genoci– oops, I mean eugenics pogro– oops, i mean program. If they needed counseling, they needed it 34+ years ago. By now they’ve either come to terms with it or they haven’t, but I think it’s a mistake to assume they’ve all been wallowing in misery this entire time.

    Money, though, is something anyone can enjoy.

  15. “rational Republican” whereever would I find one, Seattleblahs?

    And what’s up with this Republican poo fetish? That’s all you folks talk about anymore. Did you get a fax or something?

  16. @23It’s true there are a lot of stupid people on the left, but some things you can’t change: Trickle-down economics don’t work, Christian myths & bias’ are harmful when taught as fact, and a government that subsidizes industry while not regulating it creates disaster. The only thing left in the conservative larder is a hatred of immigrants and constant whining over “the liberal media.”

  17. Now look what you’ve done, Seattleblahs. You’ve got the troll talking about poo now. Isn’t there some Internet message board for Republican Scat Enthusiasts? After all, this is a family website.

  18. @23: The problem is that they prioritize their role as the opposition over their position as legislators. They’d rather oppose the president’s actions than get anything done.
    And if these people don’t abet a president driving the country into a ravine, how is it that we ended up in this mess under Bush?
    You may be unable to imagine a logical Republican taking tea with Ms. Vel-DuRay, but I am unable, in this day and age, to imagine a logical Republican.

  19. @32: Agreed. If I had been sterilized in a eugenics program I would be offended beyond belief to be offered counseling instead of money. The decision of what to do with the money available should belong to the person who suffered the loss. It would be a second helping of condescension to a person who has had their fertility choices taken away, to also not be allowed to decide what is best for them indvidually in the way of a settlement. One person may want counseling, another to make mortgage payments or to take a vacation, and another person may wish to purchase in-home caregiver services that an adult son or daughter might have provided, had they been allowed to have children.
