Egypt update: The Egyptian military shows support for protesters, police forces have retreated from Cairo, (still) president Hosni Mubarak has appointed a vice president—intelligence chief Omar Suleiman—and demonstrations against Mubarak are happening all over the world, including yesterday’s rally in downtown Seattle.

Meanwhile, in other political crises: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton flew to Haiti today to help mediate its political transition.

And another one: In southern Sudan, 99 percent of voters cast their ballots to secede from northern Sudan.

Call your mom! China might force people to regularly visit their elderly parents or face getting sued.

Budget woe du jour: The state legislature may cut services to immigrants and tighten immigration laws.

Grandma update! Mary Kay Letourneau is one.

Exit through the gift shop: A Miami sandbar has become a popular drop-off site for mysterious objects, including a baby grand piano of heretofore unknown—but likely art student-related—origin. In response, local officials warn that such installation art mischief is illegal.

Rewarding sleep-deprivation! An east coast mattress company is distributing free bipartisan pillows to freshman members of Congress who fall asleep in their offices.

  1. I love that penguin story. It comes as this a.m. my bird was calling me into the kitchen because he knows he can play with the pot holders while I’m making breakfast. He loves pot holders.

  2. Some rumors are saying the police are still in Cairo, just dressed as plainclothes thugs. Not sure how much validity there is to these rumors, but one belief is that they’ve been causing chaos to scare the populace and discredit the protesters.

  3. @ 3, remember, she had a bunch of kids born in the 80s. Although if her first kid with Vili follows in dad’s footsteps, we have only a couple of years til that one’s a parent.

  4. You have the Miami story wrong. The Sandbar was home to a piano of known origin. It was done by a High School art student who gave interviews. He removed it.

  5. Journalists on Al-Jazeera English are saying that thugs beaten back &/or killed by homeowners when they tried to loot homes in Cairo had Interior Department ID. The Interior Department includes the police, but it also has other sorts of para-military staff, apparently.

  6. @2 We did it in the USA in the 60’s. It’s not that far-fetched if Egypt is using an American playbook.

@6 The Tea Party is discredited because they are full of shit.

  7. Listen to @19 everyone… He knows a lot about other cultures. My first experience with him was when he (out of nowhere) said that Indian men had small penises. I just really cannot get over how cultured this person is.
