Budget negotiations: ongoing. Congress apparently likes talking about the debt ceiling so much that they’re going to have more talks about long-term budgeting! A special committee may be formed to create a comprehensive debt restructuring plan. In that scenario, the debt ceiling would be raised this summer.

West Seattle man: shot yesterday in the buttocks, writes Jonah Springenthal-Lee.

News Corp: the scandal extends to Scotland Yard. Several bags’ worth of documents demonstrating that News Corp reporters hacked phones was left in the police force’s headquarters uninvestigated for five years, despite senior officials’ insistence that they had looked into allegations of hacking.

Syria’s opposition: now represented by a council. The council was formed by opposition figures that wish to attract the support of anti-Assad folks and international actors; a similar approach by Libyan leaders has been met with success. The Libyan council was recognized by the US as the legitimate government of Libya yesterdayโ€”though Muammar Gaddafi remains in power.

Candidates for/holders of local office: played softball in West Seattle yesterday, writes West Seattle Blog… pictures of uncomfortable candidates/Joe Fitzgibbon included.

Hype: alive and kicking in the cases of Casey Anthony (even though her trial is over) and Carmageddon, which didn’t happen and nobody gave a shit about anyhow.

Sounders: all offense. Don’t give a shit about defense. That shit is boring. You don’t tear off your shirt after you slide tackle, do you? You do? Really? Gratuitous.

The Jimmy Smith and Kenny Burrell wish you a happy Sunday.

  1. Jimmy Smith was like a god. We got to see him at Jazz Alley a couple of years before he died, and he tore the roof off the sucker and melted the panties of a hundred ladies with his stage patter and rippling runs. It was one of the best things I’ve ever seen.

Go Sounders Go. We’re still fourth-best in the league (in points per match; we’ve played more than anyone) but only by the teensiest of margins. And no one is close to being as hot as us.

Best part: Slog favorite Roger Levesque, up on the big screen before the match, as part of a “what was your favorite book as a kid” reading promotion: “‘Twilight’ by Stephanie Meyer”.

  2. I love that the NYT Scotland Yard story’s original headline yesterday was the vivid “Tabloid Taint Rubs Off On a Cozy Scotland Yard”.

  3. Funny, I just deleted JSL’s contact information that had been in my address book. I sent him some news info a few years back.

  4. Hey libs when are you going to write about Operation Gun Runner? Are you going to devote as much attention to it as you are Rupert Murdoch?

    Doubtful.

  5. Not only did exist, but I’m starting to hear that a similar program was being run in Florida to sell arms to Guatemalan and Salvadorean insurgents as well. Keep telling yourself it doesn’t exist and maybe you won’t see the heads rolling.
