The Anniversary: Live video feed of ground zero.
Whoops!: Fort Bragg is missing 14,000 rounds of ammunition.
Pulling a Texas?: Georgia can execute innocent people too! Troy Davis’s execution has been scheduled for September 21st.
In Sadly Unsurprising News: Mitch McConnell opposes investing in infrastructure, even while 34% of bridges in Kentucky are considered “structurally deficient or functionally obsolete.”
Gov. Haley of South Carolina Almost Apologizes for Insulting Reporter: Haley’s statement: “The story painted a grossly inaccurate picture and was unprofessionally done, but my ‘little girl’ comment was inappropriate and I regret that.”
In Libya: The head of the interim government, Mustafa Abdul Jalil, flew to Tripoli for the first time since rebels took hold of the capital.
So Much for Building Trust: FBI agents participating in an outreach workshop at North Seattle Community College ended up being offensive to Muslim participants.
Wuh-oh: Wildfire on the Olympic Peninsula has grown to 850 acres.

This just in: Federal agents are sometimes almost cartoonishly racist.
In other news: NSCC couldn’t organize an event with an automatic event organizing machine.
So I’m guessing the FBI not only didn’t use Muslim agents for the outreach, they didn’t even vet it with Muslims beforehand. But given the FBI’s record, what would you expect?
That presentation took place at NSCC, but it’s not clear from the article that this was sponsored by the college. It sounds like campus space was simply being used.
Kentucky seriously don’t give a fuck about infrastructure. The only roads that matter there are the ones that lead the diesel deliveries to Wal Mart.
Um, I read that article twice now and I’m still struggling to understand what the Muslims were so upset about. I was sort of anticipating some egregious & offensive faults on the part of the FBI during the meeting, but I didn’t see any.
What is so difficult about saying “I apologize for that remark”? Or is it considered career suicide for a politician to apologize for saying something rude, the way a normal person would be expected to do?
Religious people are so touchy. I really don’t care what they do, as long as it doesn’t affect me, but when they get worked up about some dumb little detail that no one except the people in their sect would notice, it gets to be a bit much.
I give Muslims a little bit of leeway, since we as a nation tend to treat all of them as psychos based on the actions of a few select pyschos, but still – lighten up. That goes for Christians, Jews, Hindus, Atheists – anybody with an axe to grind about God – or their special brand of God.
“‘The community is tired of seeing their images represented’ in presentations about terrorism.”
Yeah, well, maybe if you stop blowing shit up, we’ll stop thinking of you as terrorists. Ever think of that?
@5: Apparently it was a workshop to build better relations between a community and law enforcement. Aside from the Muslim terrorist stereotype–something Muslims are hardly unaware of–why is terrorism even germane? If you go to a workshop on safety for women, would you consider it appropriate for them to talk about prostitution and show a stereotypical image of a street prostitute?
@8: I suppose when secular Americans lighten up about the Falwell-Robertson contingent blaming disasters on gays, feminists, etc., maybe Muslims can “lighten up.”
@5 Outreach usually means trying to convey your groups intent, ambition, achievement, and future plans.
The Muslim community is offended because obviously the FBI has no plans to profile less.
When I was an anthropology major I took a history class on the Vietnam War, and during the first few weeks when we were leaning about all the pre-cursors I kept wondering: Where were all the anthropologists at. They could have seen that debacle coming from a mile away. Alas Anthropology at the time was a very young discipline and didn’t inform policy yet. And apparently, still doesn’t.
I’m personally offended tat my tax dollars are going to bumbling idiots.
“The Muslim community is offended because obviously the FBI has no plans to profile less. “
Exactly, they should be profiling MORE.
Regarding the missing ammunition. 14,000 rounds could be used up by a few machineguns training in an afternoon. Simple enough for some paperwork to go missing on that.
A bicyclist was struck by a car and killed last night in the U District. That’s two bicyclist deaths in the past week that potentially could have been prevented by simple bike infrastructure improvements. Think about this when voting on the $60 car tab for infrastructure improvements this fall.

@10
Uh, okay, but the workshop was being given by the FBI not by the local Christian association. A focus on hunting down Islamic terrorists is, you know, like, a part of their job. So they were faulted for focusing on issues they deal with in their everyday work? Should they have pretended that’s not an issue? Fuck’s sake.
And if I were at a workshop on safety for women and I was informed about how/why prostitutes get into so much trouble, I’d find it helpful to know what I can do to avoid prostitute-like behavior. I would not get all huffy and be offended by the characterization of women.
Sorry, but I find the complaints about this meeting bullshit.
@13, yeah, I kinda rolled my eyes when I saw that story last night. That’s a completely insignificant amount of ammo. Not that any of the usual media types would have any way of knowing that.
@9 Yes, and you ride a purple unicorn to work in your tinsel fairy factory. Right wing extremists have caused more deaths in America since 9/11 than any other group, but you’re never gonna hear the Fat Businessmen from Indiana focus on stopping it. Instead, they’re the ones actively recruiting poor Muslim idiots to plan bombings so they can bust them. All this while conservative politicians sabotage any effort at stopping the right wing violence. So enjoy your sojourn in fantasy land, where climate change doesn’t exist & men protecting their homes deserve to shot. I’m sure you’re happy there.
@17
On the bright side, when he gets to fantasy land you can give him a lei and a hula dance to welcome him. You appear quite settled in there.
@14: Thanks for the tragic links. I especially appreciate that blog’s focus on the role shitty infrastructure has played in these unnecessary deaths. Maybe in a generation we won’t be engineering deadly situations for cyclists.
@9: Of terror attacks on American soil since 1980, more have been perpetrated by Jewish extremists than Islamic extremists. It is no more just to paint Muslims as terrorists than to do the same to my people.
“That’s two bicyclist deaths in the past week”
4 drivers died on the same time.
“Of terror attacks on American soil since 1980, more have been perpetrated by Jewish extremists than Islamic extremists”
Citation and numbers please. 4000+ killed by Muslims, how many by “Jews”.
Of course, the biggest killers in America are black males age 15-25.
My god, the weekend troll infestation is getting worse and worse.
“My god, the weekend troll infestation is getting worse and worse.”
So, where’s your facts?
@25: That’s not the biggest thing wrong with your post…
@23: Right here, and the data were taken from here. (Scroll down to the bottom on that second link.) Bear in mind, I’m talking about terrorist attacks, not death toll from same. The Jewish Defense League is a nasty group of ultra-Zionist fuckers, and before the formation of Israel, it was ultra-Zionist Jews who were behind most of the bombings in Palestine.
Violent xenophobic assholes are going to be violent xenophobic assholes. Religion has nothing to do with it, and neither does race.
@23 so you’re talking outside the USA? Keep grabbing at straws, they’re bigger than your cock.
@15
Whatever. You’ll think what you want to think, so it doesn’t really matter. But in terms of facts, at least as reported, it wasn’t a workshop run by the FBI. I could say more about the problem with what the FBI people chose to present, but like I said, you’ll think what you want to think, so I’ll save myself the effort.
@29: I think you’re maybe talking to me. But to answer your question, no, the pie chart (and the linked data depicted by it) refer to terrorist incidents within the USA. Where did you get the idea that I was talking about international statistics?
