  6. Limbaugh didn’t exactly challenge Obama to a debate –he “offered” to have Obama come on his show and “debate” him on-air. Of course, he only did it so he could, in the next breath, accuse Obama of being too cowardly to accept.

  7. @5: A couple nuances I think deserve to be added to that: 1) Nonetheless, it’s still a valuable political football; 2) Many Americans — correctly, I think — fail to see a huge difference between paying off the crooks who work at AIG and paying off the crooks who went nuts buying CDSes from AIG. Either way, the money isn’t being spent on things that the average taxpayer had on their wish list.

  8. 1. Obama is failing to have a plan for banks and finance. Getihner has no plan. We need triage and esp. a plan, NOW. till there is one he will be justly criticized for doing too much etc.

    3. AIG: you know, it’s Obama’s now. Don’t we own like 80% of it? why aren’t we, as owners, in control?

    Why aren’t all the top managers FIRED by now, and why are especially all those risk loving traders in london who got them into this mess (and us) fucking FIRED by now?

    Why are they SUED ALREADY BY AIG for being negligent, imprudent, not doing their jobs and causing the disaster?

    If I hire a contractor and return and see he has destroyed the house, I don’t wait till Barney Frank holds hearings about possibly maybe finding a way to sue him. I sue his ass pronto.

    You know, Obama has a lot to deal with and its mostly good but we do need more NOW. No. 1, the finance plan. No. 2, stop wondering whther to can and sue those mf’s at AIG and do it already.

    Duh, they had a duty to do their job and methinks this did not include wrecking AIG nor the whole economy.

    It’s all very wussy wussy scaredycat and the times call for ACTION like FDR would do. Obama isn’t taking aim and ACTING at the critical point that needs action: the lending crisis.

    What’s he going to do now, have his supporters like us send 10 million e mails to every bank saying “oh please recognize your losses and if u r zombie bank, dear bank manager, pls admit it and volunteer to lose your job and paycheck — preeeeeettttyyyyy please?”

    And oh “dear AIG, you got all those billions, this is Obama supporter no. 9,999,999 could you please have those criminal traders in London, you know, give back their bonuses? Pretty please? OR else we’ll, we’ll we’ll only give you $25 billion next time so there!”

  9. @8. My sentiments too. But, I am not sure that the 80-ish% of the economic “value” of AIG owned by the US Government comes with commensurate control. Instead, it may be some sort of fancy preferred stock with limited or non-existent voting rights. In other words, we don’t run AIG. Can anyone enlighten us on this with actual facts?

  11. @9: Well, new ownership of a company doesn’t in any way mean the purchaser can break an existing contract unilaterally. The concessions made by the UAW were the result of negotiations, not fiat.

    Still, I don’t understand why the government doesn’t attempt similar negotiations.

    Of course, the sad truth is that the UAW members probably have more to lose should their employers fail.

    This morning on the ABC news show “This Week” with George Stephanopolous Obama’s Chief Economics Advisor Larry Summers said Obama will eliminate earmarks from the Federal budget:
    “I believe the approach that the President is taking, … ,that is going to stop going forward the practice of earmarks, … ,I think that it’s the right kind of approach.”
