    Silent Assault on Black Women Exposed March 2 at Simmons College

    BOSTON (Feb 25, 2003) – The serious problem of sexual assault on black women and girls is the focus of a searing documentary to be screened Sunday, March 2, at 3 p.m. in the Simmons College third floor conference center, 300 The Fenway. The film is free and open to the public.

    “No!,” a full-length groundbreaking documentary, exposes the collective silence of the black community when black women and girls are raped or sexually assaulted. Though black women comprise 7% of the U.S. population, they make up 27% of the rape and sexual assault victims, and they are raped at a higher rate than white women. For every one white woman that reports her rape, at least five white women do not. And yet, for every one black woman that reports her rape, at least 15 black women do not.

    The film features interviews and performances by activists and scholars like Dr. Johnnetta Cole, president emeritus of Spelman College. The event will also feature a Moon Wisdom Healing Dance, to be used as a healing method for women surviving rape and sexual assault.

    The film and dance, in celebration of Women’s History Month, is presented by the Boston Black Women’s Health Institute and sponsored by the Simmons College Africana Studies Department, the Simmons College Institute for Leadership and Change, ABCD Health Services, Haymarket People’s Fund and the Boston Women’s Fund, among others.

    Muti killings on the rise in KZN

    A cleaner steals human placenta from a hospital, women have their body parts hacked off and are then brutally murdered.

    These incidents have captured the nation’s attention, raising the question of how prevalent are instances involving the theft of human body parts, often from people who are still alive.

    Experts say they have seen a noticeable increase in such incidents in KwaZulu-Natal and across the country.

    Former head of the Occult Unit of the SAPS in Pretoria Kobus Jonker said there has been a marked increase in the number of muti killings taking place around the country.

    Jonker said the muti trade was a booming business, hence the increase in muti killings.

    He said the most sought after body parts were the genitals of a young girl which are used to make powerful fertility potions.

    “Women who are desperate to fall pregnant seek these potions. However all body parts are valuable and fetch large sums of money,” he said.

    Jonker said that the head was also valuable because witchdoctors and people believed that it was powerful and could cure many ailments.

    People who have knowledge of muti and who spoke to the Daily News declined to reveal what various body parts are used for, saying they feared that people would use the information to harvest more body parts.

    They said that the information often led to more muti related crimes.

    In KwaZulu-Natal, poverty and human suffering are believed to be some of the reasons behind the rise in muti killings and witchcraft.

    A muti expert, who wanted to remain anonymous, said muthi killings have been taking place for decades, but were never reported.

    “These crimes are usually covered up or registered as murders. It’s difficult to keep statistics on these crimes as most of them are never reported. However, there is definitely a lot more awareness now about muti-related crimes than before,” he said.

    A week ago in Johannesburg and Mthatha in the Eastern Cape gangs sought the help of sangomas to get away with crime.

    Ten men were arrested at a sangoma’s home in Ennerdale, south of Johannesburg, after they allegedly robbed a shop and shot dead a 70-year-old man.

    They were nabbed minutes after laying their loot and guns before a sangoma for a ritual ceremony, police said. The sangoma was also arrested.

    In another case in the Eastern Cape, four men were arrested at a sangoma’s house for possession of unlicensed firearms. Police said the men were taken into custody while they were consulting a sangoma for a cleansing ceremony.

    The four visited the sangoma for muti they believed would keep them from being arrested or from being convicted in court. They were arrested after they had used the muthi.

    Man survives gruesome attack

    A 41-year-old man has survived an attack in which some of his body parts were hacked off, Eastern Cape police said on Thursday.

    Captain Lingisile Magama said the 41-year-old man was attacked near Ngxakathe village on Tuesday at 8pm by a man who was suspected to have carried out a series of murders in the Butterworth area.

    Magama said the man’s assailant had encountered him on a gravel road and had attacked him, using a bayonet knife to cut off his private parts and his nose.

    “The man was also severely wounded in the head. We suspect this is the work of a serial killer, who uses the body parts for muti purposes. The man’s attacker had told him he had body parts he wanted,” said Magama.

    The incident was reported to the police on Wednesday at 10pm.

    “The man was treated and discharged from hospital,” Magama said.

    In October a nine-year-old boy from Mncuncuze village, a 35-year-old man from Thuthukga village in Mcentane and a 75-year-old woman from Timane in Dutywa were found murdered with some of their body parts missing

    More than two years after her death, and a whole year after an inquest was ordered, nothing appears to be happening to bring the murder case of four-year-old Connie Ncube to a close.

    Said her mother Maria: “It seems everyone has forgotten about my baby.”

    Connie went missing from her Nellmapius home in February 2006. She was found later that same day in a stream. Several body parts, including her nipples, eye lids, patches of hair and a little finger were missing, presumably cut off.

    Until December 2006 not much had come of the investigation into the girl’s gruesome death.

    Then a witness claimed seeing Mandla Ephraim Zulu, a sangoma and self-proclaimed prophet, giving a briefcase of blooded body parts to Lourenco Eric Ngoveni, a hairdresser, allegedly to use as muti to make his salon a success.

    The two men were arrested and police demolished the salon. They found what was believed to be body parts wrapped in linen plastered between the bricks.

    After the suspects were refused bail, the case was postponed to October 11 2007, to determine a High Court date for the men to stand trial.

    However, on that day the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered that the suspects should be released and an inquest be held.

    Now, a year later, no inquest has been held yet, and it is believed that at least one of the accused has “disappeared”.

    In addition it appears that forensic tests were not able to identify the remains found at the hair salon as human.

    It is also believed that one of the reasons the DPP ordered an inquest was that the post-mortem report allegedly claimed Connie’s tiny body could have been “mutilated” by fish in the stream.

    The magistrate’s court cannot hold an inquest without certain information, which it has apparently been unable to get from the police for the past year.

    According to court notes, the docket and a list of questions were sent to the police on October 26 2007.

    It included issues like statements that were not sworn affidavits, outstanding statements, missing pictures and an inconclusive post-mortem.

    For the next 10 months the court has sent these same requests over and over again to the police, as the docket and replies were not forthcoming.

    Earlier this month it was established that the docket did arrive at the Silverton police station in October last year and that someone did sign for it. But the docket has now disappeared.

    At the court’s request, the investigating officer brought a duplicate docket, but still without the required information.

    The court made it clear that it wanted the docket and the information back by the end of September so that an inquest date could be fixed.

    Provincial police spokesperson, Superintendent Lungelo Dlamini, said they would investigate these allegations and those made by Connie’s mother. “If proven to be true, steps will be taken,” he said.

    Police have made a major breakthrough in the so-called Kei Ripper muti killings, which have been terrorising residents in the Butterworth and Dutywa areas for the past two months.

    Spokesperson Director Marinda Mills on Sunday said a police task team had arrested three suspects on Friday in connection with the spate of murders in which victims’ bodyparts were “harvested”.

    “This is the beginning of what we can call a breakthrough in the investigation into the killings in the area,” she confirmed.

    “Two suspects have confessed to the killing of Khanyisa Mama, whose body was found dumped at Tutura farm. They have been charged,” Mills said.

    Mama’s body was found in a forest near Tutura outside Butterworth on October 24. His eyes, heart and genitals were missing.

    Police swooped on the men’s homes in an early morning raid on Friday after following up several leads combined with information from witnesses and the public.

    One of the suspects was a traditional healer and police had confiscated medicines which would be sent for forensic testing, Mills said.

    The other suspect is a Swazi citizen.

    It is believed that one of the suspects was recruiting community members to help to kill people and harvest their body parts at the time of his arrest.

    “The two will appear in the Centane Magistrate’s court today (Monday). The third suspect was being interrogated by the task team on Sunday for his alleged involvement in these murders,” Mills said.

    At a meeting on Sunday, villagers were visibly angry, calling for the suspects’ families to leave the Tutura area.

    “My grandchild, my own blood, was recruited by these sangomas to kill people for body parts.

    “These people must leave this village now, not tomorrow,” said one upset villager.

    Other villagers – mainly women – who attended the meeting applauded when the decision was taken for the family to be removed.

    But when speaking to the Daily Dispatch, the father of one suspect said he had never told his child to kill people.

    “The allegations against my child will be proved by the court.

    “I beg these villagers not to evict me from the village. I have nowhere to go,” he said.

    Villagers said they were also upset after learning that one suspect earlier last week killed two dogs and a black goat for a sangoma’s “cleansing ceremony”.

    “To kill dogs and a black goat is bad luck to our village. We can’t stand that. These people must go,” one villager said.

    Police, however, said at this stage they did not link the arrests to the murder of nine-year-old Vika Nqwiliso, believed to be the first victim in the area.

    Nqwiliso was butchered in front of three of his friends by a man while they were looking for wild fruit at Mcucuzo village, also outside Butterworth on October 12.

    A week later, Mama’s body was found dumped in a forest at Tutura farm with missing body parts.

    A few weeks later the body of Nobijolo Dulini and that of an unidentified middle-aged man were found in Dutywa , both with missing facial and body parts.

    A number of attacks in which victims survived after being asked to “give” body parts have also been reported.

    Three people, Macebo Langeni, Mvuleli Mdolo and Veleka Mkiva – the sister of Nelson Mandela’s praise singer Zolani Mkiva – survived to tell their stories of the so-called Kei Ripper after they were attacked.

    Hazyview muti murder victim to be exhumed

    The body of a 25-year-old man murdered in Oakley Trust near Hazyview for muti will be exhumed, Mpumalanga police said on Wednesday.

    Captain Leonard Hlathi said the body of Clarance Brown would be exhumed on Thursday as part of investigations into his murder.

    Brown was allegedly kidnapped and murdered by his uncle Patrick Mokoena, 58, his cousin Sydney Mokoena, 33, and Mjojo Ndubane, 28, on February 23, this year.

    According to Hlathi, Mokoena allegedly told his son he desperately needed human body parts to boost his four businesses.

    “Sydney recruited his friend Mjojo and another unidentified man to help him to further his father’s request.

    “They went to search for Brown, as the body parts needed were supposed to be of a family member,” he said.

    They found him at the bar and waited for him at the bridge where he was supposed to pass on his way home. They offered him a lift.

    Hlathi said the men allegedly cut off his testicles, took parts of his brain, heels, pieces of bone from his legs and drained several litres of his blood while he was alive.

    They are accused of then throwing his body into the middle of a road in Oakley to appear as if he was a victim of a hit and run accident.

    Hlathi said the three were arrested on Wednesday and Thursday and appeared in the Bushbuckridge magistrate’s court on Friday when the case was postponed to August 26. They remain in custody.

    He said Brown’s body would be exhumed so a post-mortem could be conducted to determine the cause of his death.

    Man appears for child murder

    A 28-year-old man has appeared in the Evander magistrate’s court in connection with the murder of a three-year-old girl, Mpumalanga police said on Monday.

    Superintendent Abie Khoabane said the badly decomposed body of the girl was found in the veld in Embalenhle Extension 9 near Secunda at 11am on Sunday.

    The man was arrested at his home later the same day.

    “The girl was reported missing two weeks ago. Her body was burnt, there were also signs of sexual molestation. Some body parts were also missing,” said Khoabane.

    Police were not ruling out the possibility of a ‘muti’ murder, he said.

    In another incident, the body of a 43-year-old man was found in Klarinet section in Witbank in the early hours of Saturday morning.

    “The man had been severely assaulted and his genitals were cut off. Next to the body there were bricks and sticks,” Khoabane said.

    Toddler’s torturers giggle in the dock

    “This is your future we are working with. It is very serious. Please behave,” a magistrate on Thursday told the two teenagers who tried to murder a toddler, as they sat giggling in the dock.

    The boys appeared not to realise the seriousness of their situation when Ga-Rankuwa regional court magistrate Sarina Benade asked a witness if there were facilities for youngsters in prison.

    The boys, who cannot be identified as they are minors, earlier pleaded guilty to attempted murder.

    They admitted that they tried to kill 18-month-old Seiso Ratswana on August 16, 2006 when they were aged 12 and 13 respectively.

    ‘If I should consider sentencing them to imprisonment, can they be accommodated?’
    The court earlier heard that an alleged “bishop” of an Apostolic church in Winterveld, apparently gave the 12-year-old muti to cure him from smoking and sniffing glue.

    The boy was also ordered to kill a baby and bring the body to the “bishop”.

    On the day of the incident Seiso was playing with the accused’s sibling at their home.

    After closing the curtains, the younger accused said he threw tea at Seiso’s face. He and his co-accused drank some of the muti.

    The younger boy then poured boiling water and hot oil over the toddler. He smeared chillies all over Seiso’s body and inserted pills in his mouth to stop him from screaming.

    The boys wrapped Seiso in a refuse bag and covered him with blankets to take him to the “bishop”, but they were caught.

    On Thursday Lebogang Martin Baikgaki, head of the Rustenburg correctional service youth centre, testified that their inmates were aged between 18 and 21.

    He said the correctional services department did not have a policy for child offenders under 18.

    Benade said she knew of offenders younger than 18 who have been sentenced to imprisonment.

    “I am asking you this because these accused committed a very serious offence and the court must consider all options before sentencing.

    “There are recommendations that they be removed from society. If I should consider sentencing them to imprisonment, can they be accommodated?” she asked.

    Baikgaki replied that they would have to accommodate the children if they were sentenced to jail, but added that there were no programmes designed for such young offenders.

    Correctional Services social worker Tshepiso Jessica Molatlhegi said they involved young offenders in programmes to rehabilitate them, but, as the belief was that children under 18 did not belong in jail, there was no programme for them.

    State prosecutor Rose Baloyi asked: “So if they stay at a reformed school until they are 18, would they then be accepted into the youth section at prison?”

    The social worker admitted that this could be done.

    Outside court Seiso’s grandmother, Jennifer, said the baby, now aged three, was in the care of Children of Fire. “They take him for operations and are very good to him. He came home for Christmas. It was so special.”

    She said Seiso’s mother, Nomsa, was in matric this year.

    “She is a bit behind because of having Seiso and what happened to him.”

    The case was postponed to July for a criminologist’s report on the two accused who are being housed at a place of safety.

    Terror after muti murders

    Fear this week gripped Bizana and Port Edward – where at least eight women and a man have been killed in the past three months for muti.

    The women were hit on the head with a hammer, raped and had their genitalia removed while they were still alive.

    Despite three arrests made this week, many residents will not return home, fearful that the muti kingpin is still out there, waiting to strike. They sleep at work or in the fields.

    ‘In my 76 years, I have never seen anything like I discovered that morning’
    Such is the terror in the community that impromptu patrols have been organised, and one man suspected of involvement has been lynched, his body dumped in sugar cane fields.

    While police put the number of dead at nine, the community believes the figure is closer to 18.

    When the Sunday Tribune visited the area this week, we met Thembi (not her real name), 13, who cried uncontrollably as she received counselling for the first time since a gruesome discovery in her home in Izikhuba district. Her whole family was wiped out.

    Thembi was one of more than two dozen women who attended a counselling session at Mzamba’s Ebenezer Hall this week.

    She said she had been sent by her father to a house in a neighbouring location and had to stay the night there because it was late.

    ‘What these thugs did is very painful’
    Last Saturday morning she came back home to find her father and two older sisters had been killed in their beds. Her father, Madodebhunga Yalo, had been hit with a hammer. A grinder had been used to cut his skull open and his brains had been removed.

    Her two sisters, Nandipha, 21, and Nobuhle, 20, had also been hit on the head with a hammer and a sharp instrument had been used to remove their genitals from their bodies.

    The three family members will be buried next Saturday.

    They are not the only victims. At least six other women have been killed in a similar fashion in less than three months.

    It is believed body parts are sold to traditional medicine practitioners at the Bizana market to make strong muti.

    Two men have appeared in the Bizana magistrate’s court.

    They are 19-year-old Vusi Sixikixa, a Grade 12 pupil at Nombuso Secondary, near Port Edward, and 24-year-old Sonwabile Qhosha of Mzamba.

    A 30-year-old man is to appear in court on Tuesday alongside them, after being arrested in Jeffreys Bay.

    Police confirm they are questioning suspects and the names of two sangomas are being repeatedly mentioned.

    On Thursday in Izikhuba district, hundreds of women and men attended a meeting to vent their anger. It was resolved that young men would patrol the neighbourhood and deal with suspicious strangers.

    Woman workers at the local Wild Coast Sun casino, who had two colleagues killed by muti murder syndicates, are now resorting to sleeping on benches outside the casino resort for fear of travelling home after their night shifts.

    The recent arrests follow the deployment of a high-level task team of top detectives from organised crime units in Pretoria, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape.

    Police believe the killings started in October last year, when a 15-year-old schoolgirl’s body was discovered on the R61 road in Mzamba location. She had been raped, hit with a hammer and had her private parts removed.

    Local resident Mary Makhawula believes the murder investigation would not have borne results if the task team had not arrived to help the Mzamba police.

    On January 8 her granddaughter, Nozibele Ngeleka, 25, great-grandchild Yamkela, 11, and a friend, Lungiswa Tshutsha, 20, were attacked while they were sleeping.

    Nozibele died after having been hit with a hammer, raped and her genital area removed.

    Lungiswa was attacked in a similar fashion and died in hospital two weeks later. Yamkela was hit with a hammer and raped, but she survived and spent about six weeks recovering in hospital.

    Nozibele’s 3-year-old son was also in the room. The attackers ordered him to cover his face during the attack. He was found in the morning, his clothes full of blood.

    “In my 76 years, I have never seen anything like I discovered that morning,” Makhawula said. “What these thugs did is very painful. What is even worse is that the accused are local boys,” she said.

    One Wild Coast Sun worker, who asked not to be named, said women at the casino were afraid. “Before, we used to go home after our night shift. But since the death of our colleagues many of us sleep on benches outside the casino, in the staff canteen or in the laundry, and go home in the morning,” she said.

    Nobantu Mjongeni, who lives in Mzamba and works at a banana farm near Port Edward, said, “I have not been home now for two weeks. I am scared because these criminals not only attack on the road, but come into homes to kill.”

    Local community leader Vuyani Cele said it appeared that the killers typically struck their victims, raped them while they were still dazed and remove the body parts while they were still alive.

    “We started patrols this week because we want to put an end to these killings. Police tell us about 65 members of these syndicates operate in our community,” Cele said.

    Such is the fear that on Monday night heavily-armed community members descended on the house of Bongani “Vokoza” Sonjica, who was suspected of being the muti kingpin. He was abducted and assaulted. His bloated body was found on Tuesday morning in a sugar cane plantation, with open wounds to the head and cuts all over his body.

    KZN ‘muti killing’ sparks violence

    Police used force including stun grenades to prevent a house near Durban from being torched on Friday by hundreds of people angered by rumours of witchcraft killings.

    Police spokesperson Superintendent Vincent Mdunge said the confrontation at the rural settlement of Fredville in Inchanga on Durban’s outskirts between police and the 800-strong crowd followed the murder of a nine-year-old girl.

    Mdunge said local residents wanted to burn down the house, because they believed that Tuesday’s abduction and killing of the girl had been orchestrated by the family living in the house.

    The nine-year-old girl and her four-year-old brother had gone to a local tuckshop to buy sweets, but neither returned. A search was launched by the family before the young boy was later returned to the house by “three unknown men”.

    When the boy was questioned, he told the family that the girl had been murdered. Her body was found on Thursday afternoon. One of her eyes had been gouged out.

    Mdunge said he could not confirm reports that her genitals had been cut off.

    From 2002 to 2007, the number of homicides involving black male juveniles as victims rose by 31% and as perpetrators by 43%. In terms of gun killings involving this same population subgroup, the increases were even more pronounced: 54% for young black male victims and 47% for young black male perpetrators.

    The increase in homicide among black youth, coupled with a smaller increase or even decrease among their white counterparts, was consistently true for every
    region of the country and nearly all population groupings of cities. The pattern also held individually for a majority of states and major cities.

  43. @18 DESC is based at 3rd/James. And SPD is there constantly but that doesn’t lead to a drop in activity at that intersection. The idea that beefing up SPD patrols will fix that is wishful thinking. If you are a homeless, mentally ill drug addict a few day stint in the clink is nothing.
