Pierce County settles $7.8 million negligence lawsuit: The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department was sued for negligence after a woman in fear for her life asked for help and the deputies did nothing. The woman was threatened by her ex-boyfriend at gunpoint when he broke into her home and accosted her in the shower. She escaped and went to the Sheriff’s Department. She gave details, including the ex-boyfriend’s car. Oh, and that he was wearing an ankle bracelet that monitored his location!!! Still, the deputies didn’t take her seriously. She was killed by him three days later. Pierce County will pay $7.8 million to the woman’s two children.

Paper or plastic? Washington Democrats are positioning to put a bill through the Legislature that will ban the sale of plastic bags. It will also put a 10 cent fee on brown bags. If they’re successful, Washington will be the second state in the nation (behind California) to issue this ban. But really, who even opts for plastic these days? If you’re not packing your reusable bag, you gotta go paper, at least. This could be you!

No use crying over powdered milk: A semi-truck swerved on southbound I-5 around Tumwater. It lost its grip on the wet road and toppled over, its contents—bags upon bags of powdered milk—littered the freeway. All southbound lanes south of Olympia were shut down for hours. Two other cars were involved in the crash. There are no life-threatening injuries. Only one lane has been re-opened.

Washington soldier killed in Afghanistan Tuesday: Eric Michael Edmond was one of three soldiers killed when their vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device. Another Washington soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Saturday.

Take our weather, California: You need it more than we do.

Mind fuck for your Wednesday: Hey, that’s Mars!

See what’s left of Paradise: The Camp Fire that ravaged the town of Paradise, California is finally out. It’s left pure devastation in its wake. Over 13,000 single family homes were destroyed, 88 people were killed, and 153,336 acres were burned. Drone operators mapped out what’s left of Paradise. There’s not much aside from naked plots of land where homes used to be. You can see that here.

Fox News is boycotting Twitter: Why? We’re not quite sure. It started when someone doxxed Tucker Carlson by posting his home address on Twitter. But it’s been radio silent over at propaganda HQ since Nov. 8.

This is my favorite art form: If you ever need a good cry, go down a YouTube clickhole of soldiers returning home. The best sub-genre of that genre is soldiers returning home and being greeted by their dogs.

Uproar in Mexico as Jared Kushner is awarded highest honor: Jared Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, will be the recipient of Mexico’s highest honor for foreigners, the Mexican Order of the Aztec Eagle. Kushner was chosen by Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto because Kushner was instrumental in pushing for a free-trade pact with the U.S. and Canada. The Mexican people are not happy. Outrage ensued after the announcement.

Soccer team pretended one of their players was killed to get out of a match: An amateur team in Dublin, Ballybrack FC, announced that one of their players had been killed in a car accident. The team Ballybrack was supposed to play cancelled the match out of respect for the slain footballer. That supposed-to-be-dead player wasn’t dead. He found out he was dead when he got worried calls from his co-workers.

Another climate change report: This one comes from a public health journal called The Lancet. It states how deleterious the effects of climate change will be on our health. One of the biggest is heat stress which can effect people in a variety of ways, from directly killing them or indirectly causing cardiovascular disease to decreasing people’s ability to work in the fields and reducing agricultural yields. Extreme weather events will also impact health systems and prevent people from getting help. This report was compiled by 24 academic institutions and United Nations agencies. A UW professor of global health contributed, too.
