It’s been confirmed that Ted Stevens died was on the plane that crashed in Alaska last night. But did you know it wasn’t his first plane crash?

Mr. Stevens survived another plane crash on Dec. 4, 1978, that killed five of seven people on board, including his first wife, Ann. He was traveling on a Lear jet that crashed when landing at Anchorage International Airport, which was renamed Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in honor of the senator in 2000.

Before that 1978 crash, Mr. Stevens reportedly spoke of a premonition that he would die in a plane crash, a fate that is not unknown to many in Alaska who travel the vast state in small planes.

  2. His death hasn’t been confirmed. At least, not according to the link you provided, nor does any other that I could find. Of course, if the man survives TWO plane crashes, then he is obviously a cyborg and must be stopped.

  5. Small plane travel in Alaska is not exactly safe. And I’m guessing that Ted Stevens did a hell of a lot of it. I’d put this less to DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUDE and more to law of averages catching up with someone.

  7. This whole thing is kind of weird because I was just talking about plane crashes in Alaska last night… there was the eagle sucked into the engine the other day and then friends who just came back from Alaska saw a plane crash into a rest area (I think on the road to Denali). Craziness…

  10. My first thought was that this is an amateurish assassination attempt by Palin in order to get his Senate seat.

    Someone needs to tell Palin that such an attempt would only work if Stevens was a SITTING senator.

    It looks exactly like Palin’s work – explosive and clumsy.

  11. Ted Stevens was a prick, but it’s hard to forget that U.S. Senator Paul (and wife Sheila) Wellstone were killed in much the same way in somewhat similar terrain. Kind of an un-fun way to go. Down.

  12. Like the excerpt says, it’s not that shocking that someone in Alaska would die in a plane crash, since it’s one of their primary modes of transportation between cities.

  13. I just wish they would call off the tax-payer funded search-and-rescue by the National Guard and Coast Guard and let the private sector rescue him – it’s what he would have wanted.

    Wellstone was assassinated by the CIA for trying to prevent the Iraq War. This crash was obviously caused by the communoislamofascists at the FAA, who won’t let Real Americans build and fly their own planes.

  24. And as for all the millions of people who also think they are going to die in a plane crash but do not, we can just ignore that. One of those millions happens to die in a plane crash and that makes it a “premonition.” Not so much.

  29. This man should in no way be positively eulogized. He was a genteel thug, a thief, a liar, and the worst kind of politician America could possibly have been cursed with.
