Depressing news about the abandoned dogs in Spain. I thought the Brits were genetically predisposed to be notoriously good to their animals. It’s one of the many things I love about the UK.
I can’t imagine abandoning a dog regardless of economic circumstances – I mean, if there’s any love there at all, right? The worst case scenario is you’d find your animal a good home. But leaving it at the side of a road or shut up in a house with a bit of food and water – that kind of cruelty is impossible to rationalize. What kind of person is comfortable with the idea of disposable pets?
And the Brits who abandoned their dogs were on holiday in Spain yet abandoned their dogs because of finances? I don’t know about you, but when my cash is running short, I don’t go on holiday. I guess I don’t get it. I guess I don’t want to either.
18: A lot of them lived there, from what I understand, attempting to live off of savings or whatever, or having second homes there that they got before things crashed. And the UK’s quarantine laws for pets is really strict so they have problems bringing the dogs back to the UK, I guess. But it’s still reprehensible.

I especially hate it when they lock the pets up in the house. Americans have been doing that too, leaving their pets in foreclosed homes. At least give the animals a fighting chance for fuck’s sake. Don’t lock them up to die of thirst or starvation.
And in other news, Seattle wine thief Erica C. Barnett was tried and convicted of shoplifting and sentenced to life imprisonment, err… I mean, eight hours community service. Her colleagues, not at all stunned by this development, quickly came to her aid and defended her actions. A source inside the Stranger reports that the entire staff will be celebrating her conviction at a private gathering where they will drink shoplifted $8.99 red wine.
@21, I know what you mean, keshmeshi, but I absolutely hate that so many people think they’re giving their pets a “chance” by shoving them out of the car on highways or in “nature areas” and masturbating their egos with the notion that someone will take them in. Thousands upon thousands of abandoned pets die of disease, exposure, starvation, predation, further cruelty from humans, etc.
Anybody in financial straits with no other solution OWES it to their pets to take their last $500 and give it, with their pet, to an animal shelter. Yes, before they feed their kids or themselves. You can always go to a soup kitchen. If the shelter is overflowing, the only honorable, decent thing to do is pay a vet to euthanize your pet WITH YOU HOLDING IT WHILE IT DIES. If you can’t even do that, you’re a worthless fucking piece of shit. END OF STORY.
