  1. If the parents of the sick boy are ordered to give him chemotherapy, they won’t be ordered to pay for it too, will they?
    I mean, they’re citing religious beliefs, but what would happen if someone needed chemo and simply couldn’t pay for it… could they be ordered to take it AND pay for it?
    Just wondering…

  2. Presumably they have medical insurance of some sort.

    A 13-year-old doesn’t decide what medical therapy he wants. He has no standing in law; perhaps that’s improper, but it’s the case. The parents could be held culpable of child endangerment if they deny him reasonable treatment. And this isn’t a case of separation of church and state; denying medical treatment of a minor child can’t be considered a reasonable practice of religion.

  3. Interesting question, and one I’ve never really thought about. If there’s insurance, no problem, but if these nutters are so sure Jaysus will cure them, maybe they don’t have any.

    Damned if I know. I don’t think a judge can order someone to pay for something with money they don’t have.

  4. Why is the Stranger’s coverage of education layoffs in this state so pitiful? I realize that many readers of this paper don’t have children, but public education touches every person in this country. The loss of over 3,000 teachers in Washington (not to mention the hundreds of dedicated and essential paraprofessionals who also received layoff notices) is big news. It deserves more than a single line about Seattle in the morning news.

    When the Seattle P-I was laying off employees, I couldn’t navigate the Stranger website without running into some kind of coverage. Surely the readers of this newspaper can see that the loss of educators is at least as pertinent to our lives.

  5. The Hausers, who have eight children, are Roman Catholic and also believe in the “do no harm” philosophy of the Nemenhah Band. The Missouri-based religious group believes in natural healing methods advocated by some American Indians.

    [Judge] Rodenberg wrote that Daniel claims to be an elder in the band, but does not know what that means. Daniel also says he is a medicine man under Nemenhah teachings but can’t say how he became a medicine man or what teachings he has had to become one.

    He also noted that at age 13, Daniel can’t read.

    The 13-year-old kid can’t read? Have the parents taught their other seven children to read? That, in combination with denying lifesaving medical care to one of their children, spells child abuse to me.

  6. I kind of felt for that family up until I got to the point where the kid is 13 and can’t read.

    This isn’t an informed decision. This is voodoo. That kid needs help in a lot of ways.

    And as to the H1N1 virus, that guy has an uphill battle in front of him if he wants to win that lawsuit, but I’m excited to watch . That kind of precedent could hopefully turn our relationship to factory-farming around for the better. For way too long, corporations are able to make decisions based on profit that have long-term health effects for Americans (and the rest of the world). Pig farmers should be held negligent if that’s where this strain started.

  7. REmember when Obamaphiles said he’s so cool he will make a big head fake right then move left? He’s doing a lot of that rightward moving thing lately. Apart from gay rights issues he’s flip flopped on military tribunals and releasing the torture photos and now his man Panetta is taking sides against Pelosi on her statement the Bush Cheney CIA lied to her in 2002 and said they weren’t waterboarding. Gee, how dare she say the CIA lied, they never ever lied before, right? (DO NOT RECALL Iran, Guatemala, Cuba, D.R., Chile, Diem, Contras, mining Nicaragua harbors, Iran Contra).

    Obama’s so brilliant, his head fake right has got the right wing praising him for taking up the Bush Cheney position on military tribunals, release of photos, and whether the CIA lied to congress. Boy oh boy has he got them faked out!!
    Can’t wait for his inner Noam Chomsky to come out, heh heh heh.
    (And boy aren’t we lucky we didn’t get any triangulating compromiser into the oval office, mmmm?)
