Interesting that Obama gave his most major speech of administration yet, the senate slapped him down 94-6 showing craven fear by most democrats, notchange,
cheney is up 8 points in the polls and all this MSM media passing on of lies about torture “working” etc. is notchange
is working to rehabilitate GOP and scare the Dems, notchange
there were major media fear lies about terrorists being put in your neighborhood, notchange
in general a huge return to fear, notchange
Obama addressing it squarely in his speech, change,
yet at the same time, Obama promoting it by staying silent about torture prosecutions, notchange
and using the term war on terror himself (well Panetta), notchange
and taking Bush positions on tribunals and release of photos and getting applauded by the right, notchange
he cannot escape the past
he cannot triangulate terrror
the cheney fear surges
he struggles but cannot emerge from the coils
this is tragedy.

Hey, I have a “Every Child Deserves A Mother And Father” from the state of Florida…the place that bans gay adoption.

Is there a federal or state law that says people have to use credit cards??
No??
Then what difference does it make if they are greedy? Nobody has ever been able to legislate away greed and avarice….
Psssst: If you didn’t use them, the companies wouldn’t make money and they would go away……
I like the opponent of the Death with Dignity law calling a 66 year old woman dying of cancer “egotistical” for not wanting to stick around dulled by pain medication and dying of starvation. Asshole.
@6: when I was last looking for an apartment, I was fresh out of school and (luckily) didn’t have a credit card yet. Landlords did not want to rent to me because I had no credit score. So we do need them, sadly.
@6: Thank you! The credit system only has power over us because we allow it to.
@8: I’ve never had a credit card, and I have a blank credit history. The first apartment I lived in didn’t care, the house I lived in after that didn’t care, and the apartment after that just asked for a larger deposit (which was still only $500, as opposed to the usual $300).
I’m not saying there aren’t inconveniences to not having credit, because there are; namely deposits on things like cell phones and cable. And I wouldn’t have qualified for the apartment we live in now without Jon’s income/credit (which wouldn’t be that big of a deal, I’d just live somewhere else!). In my everyday life, the only effect of having no credit cards is that I don’t buy things I can’t afford. It’s the “we need them because people say we need them” mentality that allows the credit card industry to flourish to the detriment of basically everyone.
@9: I still don’t use it, now that I have one (well, I buy a small thing occasionally and pay it off quick), but it did piss me off that I was turned down for an apartment I really liked because of it. I found a different place that I like, with a local owner rather than a company who took a chance, but it was still irritating and I don’t like that having a credit card at all is a necessity for that sort of thing. But it is.
@6 You do realize that almost everyone, from giant public companies, to little ol’ ladies, use credit in some fashion? Multi-billion dollar companies borrow money on interest to buy other companies, and little ol’ ladies use credit cards to buy depends. Now, let’s say you have a credit card and the credit card company decides to jack up your interest rate to 32.99%, just because they can. Sure, you didn’t need a 50 inch screen tv, but you bought it anyway, and at 12% you could (maybe) afford it. Now you can’t. Why is your interest higher? So the credit card companies can line their pockets with more money. Having a law the protects consumers and will enable at least some of them to become solvent is hardly a bad thing.
And good luck getting a car, apartment, mortgage without a credit history. It’s an absolute necessity in today’s world.
I didn’t even realize the “Death With Dignity” law was passed, was it reported on Slog? We can only hope that opponents of these laws will end up dying the same slow and painful deaths they attempt to impose on others.
Having a credit card is not the same thing as using it.
Credit card companies did not invent credit (hello Merchant of Venice!)
If people stopped using cards at the rate they do, things would change is all that I am saying.
Also, they are companies. Companies’ express purpose is to make money. They are making money in the American capitalist system like anyone else can (oil companies too). Pretty simple.
Now, insurance companies making money off of health care — don’t get me started on that one!
As Aislinn @9 points out, it’s inconvienient sometimes to be without a card, but that isn’t the same thing as a necessity. Health concerns are part of everyone’s lives daily.
Listen to Elizabeth Warren on Fresh Air, you can find her in the archives. She talks about the Credit Companies and the tricks they use to get more money out of consumers.
This is not just about “irresponsible” consumers, it affects everyone with a line a credit, which again, is a necessity in this day and age. They can make money without taking advantage of consumers.

It wasn’t. ๐
It would have to have been the ‘ButtFucking with Dignity’ law to get a notice on slog…
I’m pretty sure most of the Ninja Turtles are members of NORML.
Well, they ARE green, danhowes.
“cheney is up 8 points in the polls”
Cheney isn’t running for anything, and he isn’t up “in the polls.” One poll about his likability. And Bush is up six points. Happens all the time post office for Pres/Vice Pres. Get a grip. 37% “approval” is hardly something to worry about.
Could we please try to avoid “utilize” when “use” would work just as well?
Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaark snark snark snark snark snark.
You pretty much can’t rent a car witjout a major credit card. They wouldn’t even accept my debit card!
LMAO at the Teenage Mutant Ninja anti drug propaganda. Researchers at the National Institute on Drug Abuse have found the brains of morbidly obese pizza-addicted people resemble those of far gone coke and meth users. Functional MRI images of their brains show serious underactivation of dopaminanergic pathways. If the Ninja creators wanted to get real, they’d urge kids to say no to drugs and instead munch on carrots.

I’m waiting for the real ending to the anti-drug propaganda scene. The dealer was twice that kid’s size. The kid would be locker stuffing for sure.
Dealer: It’s pot, dude. It’ll fix up that bloody nose for ya.
Kid: But I don’t have a bloody… oh.
