The Longest Day: As everybody should know it is the 65th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Europe. But Also it is the third anniversary of Billy Preston’s death, a dynamic musician who is the only other person ever credited on a Beatles’ song.

The link to NYT didn’t work but what I recall from the story is this move by the administration has nothing to do with “quick executions” as you imply.
Get it together, ok?
The problem is some dumb rule preventing suspects from copping pleas. The pleas they would get would be long jail sentences. They wouldn’t cop a plea to execution, DUH.
The problem is the dumb Bush admin’s torture means we probably can’t prove anything against them in a court of law. So in addition to being illegal and strengthening enemies, etc., torture means you can’t prosecute the worst offenders.
Anyhow the Obama administration is smartly solving the problem by changing the rules so the govt. can do plea deals for long sentences.
Oh wait, telling everyone there will be quick executions makes for a funny headline, ha, ha ha.
I miss Billy Preston!
Oh, come on, PC – you’ve been around way too long to actually expect responsible journalism from The Stranger. if it doesn’t involve butt-fucking or drugs, it’s not news around here.
Glad to see Slog is so amused at the prospect of eating a North Korean nuke.
It will make it a little easier on the rest of knowing you went with a shit-eating smirk on your face-
oh, who am I kidding;
we are going to bust a gut laughing when the Koreans burn LA, San Fran and Seattle. Commies nuking West Coast Liberals- it’s the plot for a sitcom.
#1: Nope, you’re wrong. The guilty pleas in question would lead to death sentences. It’s in today’s NYT: “US may permit guilty pleas in capital cases,” http://www.nytimes.com/2009/06/06/us/pol…
Another correction: as far as I can tell, it’s not true that “Joe Scarborough once defended the assassin of Dr. Tiller in court.” As the link makes clear, Scarborough defended a different murderer of a different abortion provider, not Tiller’s murderer.
Yeah all the unpaid interns kinda suck including that Aaron Pickus guy, they write like they are 17, get the facts wrong 50% of the time, and post some of the least great Biilly Preston bits. Jackass!
One of the great parts of our legal system is that everybody gets to defend themselves, abortion provider killer or not. And some attorney has to do that job. I don’t know who Joe Scarborough is or what horrible things he’s done but I don’t think it’s fair to criticize him for playing an important role in the legal system.
@6 You have to be a honky, cause every black person knows that the video was B. Preston’s version of Summertime being played between church services on Sunday and a very good rendition indeed.
if Scarborough had defended a cop killer slog would be proud of him
I think if you wanted to be picky, you could also say that Tony Sheridan was credited on a Beatles recording – “My Bonnie”?
@#11 no pickiness about it, Wikipedia clearly states, “Preston along with Tony Sheridan are the only two non-Beatles to receive billing as an artist alongside the Beatles.” And of course if it’s on Wikipedia it must be true – though in this case I’m likely to accept it as a verifiable fact.
They want to cop to a death sentence so they can be martyrs. 72 virgins and some such nonsense.
On that “at risk for being conservative” thing – there was an article in the BBC a while back (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/natur…) which indicated that people who have strong physiological fear responses are more likely to have politically conservative views.
Bit tragic, really – if the lashing out behaviour we see from the far right is just a manifestation of fear.
Sonia Sotormayor is a racist and a disgrace to the American court. She and other female minorities like MIchelle Obama have relied on anger to get where they are, and both are a terrible example to young girls everywhere.
@15
Are there any female minorities you think have gotten where they are through merit?
