In Case You Missed It: Local sandwich-delivery man Robert Townsend was killed by a car in the U District on Saturday, raising yet more questions about bicycle safety in Seattle.

Freed in Iran: Two hikers in Iran sentenced to espionage before the first Morning News I wrote are released after posting $500,000 bail. The Guardian theorizes: “A deal might have been struck for the lifting of a travel ban on Fereidoun Abbasi-Davani, the head of Iran’s atomic energy agency.”

Ron Sims for Mayor? He’s generating a fair bit of local buzz. Not that speculation on who’s running for mayor is accurate or means anything, but he does seem to be putting himself out there.

Vaffanculo! Vai in Culo! Italian five-year bond yields jump to 5.6 percent. That’s triple Germany’s yield.

Body Found in Lynnwood: Off of the 14700 block of Highway 99. Fortunately, “the death does not appear to be suspicious.”

Lynnwood Watch: Another pedestrian died in Lynnwood after getting hit by an SUV last week. The driver was an 87 year-old man from Edmonds.

Novak Djokovic: won the US open. Not gonna comment more and reveal just how ignorant I am about tennis. But the headline says the final was epic.

God Save Miss Universe: Leila Lopez from Angola has been elected Miss Universe. Apparently, she spoke Portuguese to the Brazilian judges, and promises to spend her reign fighting AIDS and poverty.

Speaking of Poverty: According to the New York Times, we’ve hit the highest rate of poverty since 1993. The poverty line in 2010 was at $22,113 for a family of four.

Let’s watch ducklings (safely) blown around by the wind.

  1. I work in Lynnwood, near 99. Trying to walk anywhere around here involves taking your life in your hands, much worse than any neighborhood in Seattle. Poor lady.

  2. And it’s not news – yet – but keep your eyes on the election for Andrew Weiner’s seat in New York today. The Republican candidate has couched it as a referendum on Obama, and is, surprisingly, ahead in the polls. It’s a close race, though, so it should be interesting.

  3. I voted for Ron Sims several times (including in the gubernatorial primary against Gregoire), but the dude needs to retire from local politics.

  4. @5, we shouldn’t underestimate local voters’ willingness to support a comeback, especially if vague contrition for past missteps and promises to do better are on offer. Sims may need to retire but I don’t know if he can.

  5. @1 Agreed. When I moved from Fremont to Lynnwood a few years back, I was amazed at the number of traffic accidents that I saw. Not just seeing the aftermath, but actually witnessed the collision. I saw 3 within the first year, after having not seen a single one while living on Fremont Ave. There are a lot of folks in South SnoHoCo that really shouldn’t be driving. The pending dismantling of the local bus system will make it much worse.

  6. I stumbled upon the Miss Univ pageant while really drunk and stoned last night…Angola was the only one who looked even slightly different from the group. It was totally bizarre!
