  5. Very friendly correction: the plural of “bus” is “buses.” “Busses” is plural for “buss,” which is an old-fashioned word for “kiss.”

    he names reducing parking requirements in the central city as a big achievement. Bullshit. Parking is still required only at a slightly reduced rate in a few tiny areas….99% of all new development comes with rules mandating parking and even expensive underground parking, PROHIBITING the kind of city we want to be and forcing people w scooters disabilities or just don’t need a parking space on site to spend an extra $40-50K for their condo (or equiv. amortized if new apt. bldg.).

    This is such typical Seattle self congratulatory bullshit….a teeny tiny microstep hinting at change, is portrayed as an accomplishment.

    Only proper nouns are capitalized, as is this is not German. So it should read, “Erstwhile copyeditor.”

    More significantly, google plural for buses and you get this:

    “Note that some dictionaries list “busses” as an acceptable plural for “bus.” Presumably, this is because the plural “buses” looks like it ought to rhyme with the plural of “fuse,” which is “fuses.” “Buses” is still listed as the preferable plural form. “Busses” is the plural, of course, for “buss,” a seldom used word for “kiss.””

    In the future, pls. refrain from supporting the stereotype or copyeditors as nit pickers obsessed with so called rules that often are mistakenly applied. Thanx.

  20. @14, I completely agree, only, I think #8 was referring to the spelling “Nickles” for the guy that was in the linked story, and was mayor for eight years, Greg Nickels.

    About the one day lockout, the Nickels folks said they had an agreement from the middle of December (you know, when they were helping McGinn’s staff with their transition). The McGinn folks, accoding to the story, did not live up to that agreement.

    I find that I am repeating the report here because the smarmy “news” comment, and those of many commentirs here and in the real newspaper, are blowing past the facts in the story.

    I really did not like some of the things Nickels did, but the story is not just about how the Nickels folks were treated, but also how the McGinn folks treat others.

    I guess you shoul get used to that from the McGinn group. When it is you, or your group, the have the capacity to treat you the same.

    In the United States, blasphemy has never been considered a crime.

    In countries where Islam is the state religion, blasphemy is still considered a serious offence. In countries like Pakistan and Afghanistan, the penalty for blasphemous crimes can be execution.

    A number of Islamic countries have been pursuing an international anti-blasphemy resolution at the United Nations that would restrict any speech that is offensive to any religion.

    If there was a verbal agreement then it’s ok that they screwed Nickels’ folks? Watch your back.
    Nickels is not my guy, and I was not thrilled with the available choices.
    I do think that kind of agreement does suck, but that is a secondary point to me.

  29. I’m upset about Ireland’s anti-blasphemy law. Just when it’s trying to become a modern, grown-up country, it goes and gives legal privileges to one set of religious ideas. Unacceptable.

  32. Blasphemy has likely never been a crime in the U.S. as such, but I’ll bet in 1620s/30s Massachusetts (as well as other colonies) it was a quite different story.

  34. On the Medical Bennefits for Nickles staff, his administration was incredibly persistant and agressive about adding restrictions to coverage and transfering costs to employees. If some of this bit them in the ass it doesn’t break my heart. When they had hiring freezes the only people they were hiring was labor relations lawyers and managers.

  35. @24 The Islamic coutries were trying to push for “insulting Islam” to be a crime… then when it was pointed out to them that it’s not all about them they they changed to to include everyone, at least on paper. The Islamic world has never censored itself when it comes to insulting Jews and I can pick up any paper from the Muslim world and point to things referring to Jews that if it was about Muslims would land the author in prison, if not execution. Not only do I not believe in censorship for insulting relgion, but the Muslim countries pushing for it would be unwilling to follow it themselves.

  36. #36/JaneV, thanks for pointing that out. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if the Islamic countries were, as you said, originally pushing for just an anti-Islam-blasphemy resolution at the U.N. It also wouldn’t surprise me for Arab-Muslim countries to have a double standard when it comes to insulting Jews (and perhaps Christians as well.)

    I’m in complete agreement with you about not believing in any “anti-blasphemy” laws. Since it’s an idea, or belief, there’s no reason for religion to be above criticism or mockery. It’s not civil to insult someone or their beliefs but that doesn’t mean it should be against the law. I admire The Stranger for not bowing to either political correctness or fear by publishing a few of those Danish Muhammed cartoons, accompanying a good article by Bruce Bawer: “All the Rage”
