  3. The bookstore closing is really no big shock to me. I live near there, and the times I’ve visited, the women working have been indifferent to me at best (I’m male). The same thing happened to our previous bookstore several years ago…the lesbians who owned it were indifferent/hostile to gay men and then complained when they didn’t support their business.

    Same thing happened a couple of decades ago in St Louis. Get a clue–don’t treat your clientele badly and then complain when they stop supporting you.

    Bookstores are fags. Support your library, and brave the winter months’ garage sales.

  6. That headline would imply that reading is widespread among gays. My life experience strongly indicates that my voracious reading is an anomaly. Mind you, I don’t read gay books anyways.

  8. @ 6 – It’s not just a gay thing, Gitai. Sadly, it seems like nobody reads books anymore.

    While it can be argued that the internet & Amazon have been a boon to GLBT folks in rural areas and in red-state territory, it’s actually made it easier to be closeted. Think about it: before the internet, if you wanted a copy of some GLBT book, you had to take the risk of being seen walking in to a GLBT bookstore. Now, you just order it from Amazon. They’ll even deliver it in the classic “plain brown wrapper” (as if it was porn), so your nosey neighbors won’t discover your big, horrible secret. Kinda sad.

  11. Online shopping has driven a lot of local shops out of business all around the country. Why should bookstores be any different, or be propped up when they can’t compete?

    To blame Amazon is pretty small-minded.

  14. First, Mr. Unpaid Intern, Amazon is my local bookstore, so fuck you.

Why should bookstores be any different, or be propped up when they can’t compete?” — One of the reasons that Amazon is able to compete so effectively is that they do not collect sales tax for purchases outside WA, so they are subsidized quite heavily at the expense of all local businesses.

  17. @8: If I may enter a counter argument to the statement that “Amazon has made it easier for people to stay in the closet.”

    While true that looking for and buying LGBT related media online allows a person to browse/buy without having to go into a local LGBT bookstore (provided that one exists in their community and provided the person knows that such a shop is in his/her community and is able to get there), for some, depending on where they are in their development/identity discovery/coming out, the act of even looking at then buying such a title (even a mainstream title that deals with LGBT themes or history, like a work by Randy Shilts – And the Band Played On; Mayor of Castro Street; Conduct Unbecoming) may take a great deal of courage for the individual since they know that there will be a record of the purchase at Amazon and furthermore once the book arrives it will be in their possession where it can be descoved at anytime – which may require explaning to the person who discovers it.

    If anything, the ability to get LGBT materials online (not just from Amazon) gives people, who might not yet have the courage or even the ability (due to geographic restrictions) to go into a store with a LGBT media selection, a chance to acquire books and films that help them to understand that they are not alone, and beging to become comfortable with who they are – so that one day when the have the chance to go into and shop at a local LGBT bookstore, they will feel okay about doing so.
