SPD Disproportionately Tickets Black People for Jaywalking: Between 2010 and 2016, Seattle Police officers drastically cut the number of jaywalking tickets they issued from 461 to just 160. Great news, right? Kinda. Of the 1,710 tickets issued over that six-year period, “447 — more than one in four — went to a black pedestrian,” Gene Balk reports for the Seattle Times. “In 2016, 28 percent of the citations were written to black people, who represent just about 7 percent of the city’s population, according to census data.” Seattle Police Assistant Chief Perry Tarrant told the Times that “on the face of it, it appears to be a disparity,” but that he wanted to take a “deeper dive” into the data to be certain. Balk rightfully notes that jaywalking while Black is a growing national problem.
