What the Fuck, WaLeg? State legislators failed to reach a budget deal after ending their third special session last night. Negotiations broke down over a water rights bill that attempted to reverse parts of a court decision finding that Whatcom County failed to protect its water resources; the court found that Whatcom, in allowing new wells that sucked water away from salmon, neglected its responsibilities, and counties would have to make sure BEFORE allowing well drillers to drill that the water was actually available for wells. (Makes sense, no?) Tribes supported the ruling, but this made some kinds of rural development more difficult, which made rural property owners in red counties mad.
