Mukilteo Community Remembers Slain Teens: Anna Bui, Jake Long, and Jordan Ebner, graduates of Kamiak High School, were fatally shot when a 19-year-old gunman (named here) opened fire on a gathering of local teens. The shooter, a University of Washington student, is currently in police custody. The community held a vigil for the victims on Sunday night. From The Seattle Times:

Bearing flowers, sobbing and clutching each other, they formed a circle of mourners in the school parking lot. Some scrawled messages on the pavement using chalk in Kamiak purple: “Anna, fly like an eagle, sing sweet dear girl,” and “Take the road home, KHS Choir.”

Donald Trump “Has a Dark Heart,” Says Father of Slain Muslim U.S. Army Captain: On the last night of the Democratic National Convention, Khizr Kahn, accompanied by his wife, Ghazala, gave a moving speech in tribute to their son, Humayun Khan, who was killed by a suicide bomber while serving in Iraq in 2004. Khan also discussed Donald Trump’s dangerous, anti-immigrant rhetoric, which naturally prompted a confusing response from the human Cheeto himself, which included criticizing Ghazala for not speaking on stage and how he had “sacrificed” a lot to create thousands of jobs.

In another statement, released Saturday, Trump said the Khans’ son should be honored for his heroism. His real problem with Muslims, he said, are the Islamic terrorists who killed Khan and seek to do the U.S. “further harm.”

Mr. Khan Doesn’t Buy That: He told The Washington Post that Trump’s words were “faked empathy.” He went on to say:

“What he said originally — that defines him . . . people are upset with him. He realizes, and his advisers feel, that [his original statement] was a stupid mistake. That proves that this person is void of empathy. He is unfit for the stewardship of this great country. You think he will empathize with this country, with the suffering of this country’s poor people? He showed his true colors when he disrespected this country’s most honorable mother. . . . The snake oil he is selling, and my patriotic, decent Americans are falling for that. Republicans are falling for that. And I can only appeal to them. Reconsider. Repudiate. It’s a moral obligation. A person void of empathy for the people he wishes to lead cannot be trusted with that leadership. To vote is a trust. And it cannot be placed in the wrong hands.”

Mrs. Khan Elaborated Further About Her Choice to Be Silent: “Donald Trump said he has made a lot of sacrifices. He doesn’t know what the word sacrifice means,” she wrote for The Washington Post.

I cannot walk into a room with pictures of Humayun. For all these years, I haven’t been able to clean the closet where his things are — I had to ask my daughter-in-law to do it. Walking onto the convention stage, with a huge picture of my son behind me, I could hardly control myself. What mother could? Donald Trump has children whom he loves. Does he really need to wonder why I did not speak?

Donald Trump said that maybe I wasn’t allowed to say anything. That is not true. My husband asked me if I wanted to speak, but I told him I could not.

Outrage About Trump’s Response Inspired #TrumpSacrifices: Here are some highlights:

Louisville, Ky. Judge Horrified that Local Jail Denied Defendant’s Requests for Pants, Feminine Hygiene Products Before Coming to Court: The video of the court hearing, dated July 29, went viral over the weekend. In the video, Judge Amber Wolf was outraged at the inhumane treatment of a defendant who said she was not given pants or feminine hygiene products while booked in a local jail for failing to complete a diversion program after a 2014 shoplifting charge. “Am I in the twilight zone? What is happening?” Wolf asked in the video. According to WDRB, who broke the story, Wolf “released the woman from jail with time served and a $100 fine.”

After the jail brought the woman clothing, Wolf called her back to the bench to apologize.

“This is not normal,” she said. “I’ve never seen it happen. … This is completely inhumane and unacceptable. I’m sorry you had to go through this.”

The woman told the judge there are several woman in jail with similar clothes who were also not given uniforms.

“I don’t know if they were picking or choosing” who to give jumpsuits to “or what the criteria is,” she said.

But [jail spokesman Steve] Durham reiterated that the jail does have enough clothing for its inmates, despite overcrowding.

“We’ve never run out of clothing,” he said. “We’re not having people around here that don’t have appropriate clothing.”

According to USA Today, jail officials are now defending themselves, saying that “the defendant was wearing shorts” under a long t-shirt, so they didn’t do anything wrong. Ugh.

Speaking of “Ugh,” Matt Damon Was Cast as the Hero of Chinese Action Film The Great Wall: The movie, slated to come out next February, is set in ancient China. Per Hollywood tradition, a famous white dude—not one of the industry’s many talented Asian actors or actresses—is starring in the film.

Actress Constance Wu of Fresh Off the Boat also issued a response on Twitter:

Why is this so insidious? “The way the film not only erases Asian people from an Asian narrative but furthers the (false yet somehow still quite popular) narrative that people of color can only be saved by a brave, well-intentioned white person. The go-to studio justification for this is that ‘mainstream’ audiences won’t be able to relate to a protagonist that is too ‘different,'” ThinkProgress reports.
