  1. Wow.

I actually hope that baptist church goes through with it. That’d put another angle on Christmas displays. Big red flashing lights in the shape of a burning inferno. A sneering animatronic Santa with devil horns, poking little children attached to his sleigh by leather straps.

  2. i love fred phelps. he helps your average person–maybe not so political, maybe not very educated–to see just what a total lack of reason, sanity and humanity looks like in the religious right. even if there’s not much else about today’s world he/she can fully understand, at least this much is clear as day.

  3. Oh Metallica….why did you have to cut your hair, go to rehab, start wearing eyeliner, and turn into douchebags? Cliff is rolling over in his grave.

  4. “The movement that fought for equality and succeeded in electing Obama president is really looking to make progressive gains now,”

    “

Although Barack Obama has said that he supports civil unions, he is against gay marriage. In an interview with the Chicago Daily Tribune, Obama said, “I’m a Christian. And so, although I try not to have my religious beliefs dominate or determine my political views on this issue, I do believe that tradition, and my religious beliefs say that marriage is something sanctified between a man and a woman.”

  5. Metallica have always been douches, Jonah. In fact, heavy metal has always, and always will, suck, 24-7. Please post more videos with Blue Cheer in them.

  6. A nativity scene, three signs mocking atheism, an atheist sign promoting winter solstice, and now Phred Phelps’ anti-santa sign… I can only imagine the Gov. rolling her eyes and sighing at the ridiculousness of it.

Oh, and Metallica was definitely better pre-black album. Ride the Lightning was their best.

  7. I have a question for all those working-class Democrats – especially the ones employed directly or indirectly by the U.S. auto industry – who in the 80s became so-called “Reagan Democrats” and voted Republican for the next twenty years. The question is this: Given the “fuck you” attitude being contemptuously displayed by Senate Republicans where it concerns a rescue plan for your industry, your job, your life, how do you feel now about your abandonment of the Democratic Party?

Huh? Got an answer? Nothing deep. Just a quick sentence or two would do. I mean, how does it feel to have spent all those years voting your bigotry and your willful political ignorance and your sheep-like need to be manipulated by the thugs who infest right-wing talk radio, and now that your whole life is collapsing because of the policies of these Republicans (who never gave a shit about you anyway) you get to watch and listen as they kick you and your family to the curb and say, naw, we don’t think the “taxpayers” wanna bail out the auto industry; we don’t care if another three or four million more families head for the homeless shelters and food stamp offices.

Seriously. I’m just curious. Because, you know, there were a whole clutch of us on the near left (we were called liberals) who warned about this happening; who screamed and beat our fists on the floor for years and said to our fellow Democrats, don’t be fooled, don’t buy the lies, stay in the Democratic Party, fight for your rights, your families, your jobs. If the Democratic Party need reforming, stay and do it. Don’t get sucked into the abyss created by Republicans who want to see you and your kids and your spouses and your dreams shredded, ripped to pieces by their insatiable greed and their hot-blooded insistence on turning this country hard right, neofascist, ugly, divided.

  8. I have no problem with Westboro’s sign. Let ’em put it up. The whole thing is a devolving into this absurd joke, and I for one, think it’s a hilarious one. I think it should not stop until each and every religion or non-religion has a sign or display up.

It’s almost like they thought, you think that atheist sign is crazy, wait till you see whatwe come up with!

  9. So what’s it going to be? Is the state going to edit or disapprove some capitol holiday displays? Or will this finally be the end of it?

  10. Ok, so seriously, what is the deal with all this metal? Last I remembered you we’re cold into hip hop. Now you’re posting clips from Ronnie James Dio and Metallica — the inventors of thrash metal.

  11. A little Metallica education is in order. This video is PRECISELY when they WERE douches! I mean, come on, get it right! Compare this “vintage” Metallica clip you posted (it’s total crap, can’t you tell?) with any of the recent youtube footage from the Metallica show at the Key last week. Please. Please do this.

Metallica were great from birth thru about 1987. After that came “…And Justice,” and the made-for-MTV video (a huge stab in the back to longtime fans), “One.” From then on — until just a few MONTHS ago — THEY SUUUUCKED.

This video you call “vintage Metallica” is HORRIBLE. So just…get it right, will ya? The concert at the Key last week fuckin’ DESTROYED.

Period. Watch the youtube vids from the Key, particularly “Creeping Death.” Watch and learn.

  12. I LOVE the song they wrote for their display!

Before I scrolled down far, enough, I thought for sure, based on the placeholder still shot, that the video was of Vincent from Beauty and the Beast the TV show. I was disappointed that it wasn’t.

  13. @ 7 You are correct.

Re: Phelps. Now I have “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” in my head. He will pay for this. Pay with the blood of the god-fearing!

  14. So it was Ken Hutcherson who put up one of the counter athiest signs. And it says “There is one God…. Atheism is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.”
That is so weak… Grow a brain Ken what the hell is superstious about atheism?

  15. If you wait until January 1st, you can recycle your unused electronic equipment free.

But how I’m going to get a cyclotron to the store is beyond me …

  16. Westboro Church Display: I think this will cause the Governor to go back and ban all Christmas/holiday displays on state property. I think being “uncomfortable” around Christmas displays is just as stupid as being “uncomfortable” around being around Gay people.

  17. MOAA: I hope Obama does not give in to the MPAA. I know piracy is a problem but I don’t like the idea that the MPAA would be allowed to look at anyone’s computer to see if they have copyrighted material on it.

  18. Gay Day Out” I did my part regarding “Day Without Gay.” In solidarity, I acted Gay yesterday (not any different than my usual self) and didn’t do any work. The three gay people I know that work here at the nursing home all showed up for work, so I tried to offset part of their “gay footprint.”

  19. wow, am I the only Metallica fan that has loved them from the very beginning through the dreaded Black album, right up to today? Sure, Enter Sandman isn’t on the same plane as Freyed Ends of Sanity, but it certainly doesn’t suck. I don’t even hate St. Anger (ok, it is a little weird, but interesting at worst)… Sheesh!

Oh, and I totally don’t give a fuck about their whole deal with Napster. I don’t crank that shit because I care about the plight of people that like to download. I crank it because it fucking rules. And because I want Kirk Hammet to sweat on me.
