Against the objections of the US and Israel, the United Nation’s General Assembly voted today to upgrade the status of Palestine to “nonmember observer state.”

“We did not come here seeking to delegitimize a State established years ago, and that is Israel,” said Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, “rather we came to affirm the legitimacy of the State that must now achieve its independence, and that is Palestine.”

Not really sure why the US and Israel objected, since both in theory support a two state solution. But they did.
