When former King County Superior Court judge and lawyer Debora Juarez showed up to The Stranger‘s endorsement interview with a fat binder full of notes and confidently, lengthily answered questions about police reform, we were impressed. That said, we almost choked on our blunts when we heard that Juarez gave the calcified dentures at the Seattle Times editorial board a very dodgy, very lawyerly answer about Shell’s presence in Seattle. Apparently, that answer tickled their ball hairs enough for an endorsement. Well, here’s the thing: OUR genital hairs respond to more than just talk about the Shell issue (unlike the Seattle Times editorial board’s), and we admire (and are putting our faith in) Juarez’s history of tribal sovereignty activism—activism that continues to shift the fundamental power dynamics behind some of our most pressing social and environmental issues.
