Street Sounds (Sundays 6-8 pm) with DJ Kutfather remains the only
FM source for underground hiphop in the city; Jack Straw Productions broadcasts
live performances by local bands on The Live Room (Saturdays 8-9
pm), and experimental music on Sonarchy Radio (Saturdays 11 pm-midnight);
and Greg Vandy’s The Roadhouse (Wednesdays 6-9 pm) plays excellent
“roots rock, blues, and Americana” by the likes of Fred Eaglesmith, Lucinda
Williams, Blind Boys of Alabama, and Whiskeytown.

Bellevue Community College has international folk and American music covered
better than any station in Seattle, with programs dedicated to reggae, African
pop, and Hawaiian music (to name a few), plus hours of R&B, jazz, blues, and
soul. Flipside Fifties (Saturdays 5-7 pm) is two hours of lesser-known
R&B and rockabilly, followed by “the sounds that shaped soul music” with Bob
Anthony on One Step Beyond (Saturdays 7-9 pm). ALSO: Brazilian
music and culture on Raizes (Saturdays 2-4 pm); Bessie Smith,
Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday, and others on Womanotes (Wednesdays

9 am-noon) profiles one artist each week, along with influential country music
from the ’40s through the ’70s.

Devoted entirely to old soul, KSRB plays five hours of soul and R&B every night
on the Soul Food Cafe (weeknights 9 pm-2 am), plus gospel from
8 am-5 pm on Sundays. The week is rounded out with an additional 136 hours of
soul. Damn, that’s a lot of soul.
