Bob Marley heeded his ego, not his conscience, when he broke up the Wailers–the TEAM that created “Burnin’ and Lootin’,” “Get Up, Stand Up,” “Small Axe,” etc.–and left Jamaica. Because of that ego, Marley/Tosh was like Lennon/McCartney if the partnership had been dissolved in ’63–a tragic waste. Love of money led Rasta Bob to tone down his music’s political content and let it become over-produced, “exotic” pop mush. If the man who sang “Soul Rebel” knew he’d someday write “Buffalo Soldier” and “Coming In From the Cold,” he’d have offed himself.
