Redmond W: Plymouth Housing broke ground on 100 units of permanent supportive housing in downtown Redmond last week. It’s been a journey. The building was supposed to be in Kenmore. Its City Council even approved the project in 2022. But in 2023, opposition ramped up, according to the Urbanist. Some Kenmorons were anxious about the building’s proximity to the city’s business district. Others had been duped by the false claim (reinforced by reporting from KOMO) that the city was building a homeless shelter. The Kenmore City Council ended up rejecting the plan in December 2023. Leadership in Redmond stepped up in a 5-1 vote last February. The expedited process was dragged out by a series of appeals, but they were dismissed by July.

Oh, and when the President lost the 2020 election, his allies called on Trump to invoke the law to hold onto power as a very real insurrection happened at the Capitol.

It’s not reassuring that the President says he doesn’t see an immediate need to invoke the Insurrection Act, or that we didn’t tumble into authoritarianism after President George H.W. Bush invoked the Insurrection Act during the LA Riots in 1992. Trump’s Cabinet members have called the ICE protesters “insurrectionists.” Stephen Miller, the man with the deportation plan, called the Oregon judge’s ruling “insurrection.” These comments, along with false assertions about Democrat-led cities, are all a bullshit pretext to invoke the insurrection Act when the government has no actual justification to do so.
$$$: According to a study from Brown University’s Costs of War project, the US has given Israel at least $21.7 billion since the Hamas attack that killed about 1,200 people. In the two years since, Israel has leveled Gaza and killed about 68,000 Palestinians. Another study from the Costs of War project found the US has spent about $10 billion more on security aid in operations in the Middle East in the same period, according to the AP. The State Department had no comment. The White House referred the AP’s questions to the Pentagon, “which oversees only a portion of the assistance,” the AP writes.

The Plymouth project in Kenmore wasn’t rejected because of the proximity to the business community. It was rejected because the citizens were never told it would be a low barrier shelter that is in close proximity to the business community and other public institutions like the library and the kids splash pad. The city doesn’t have the resources to manage a bunch of drugged out addicts roaming around and rightfully rejected the premise. Just a reminder that the guy who was killing homeless individuals last year with an axe was also a resident of a Plymouth location in Seattle. If we want to have low barrier facilities they also need to come with the requisite security and support to manage them and they should not be located next to places where the community can be negatively impacted. Of course the state responded to this rejection by putting forth legislation to prevent cities from denying these types of facilities without state approval so look forward to having them eventually rammed down our throats.

According to the article the project was rejected over parking and building aesthetics, not security. They mention the need for more “services and amenities” for low barrier housing, which i take to mean they want more cops, but the project was killed over code violations.

If you read the Plymouth website they tout they are housing first and low barrier. If you also read the linked Urbanist article which is hardly conservative it also notes the increase in first responder calls to the Bellevue location for OD’s and public safety issues. Situating these facilities next to public community centers is not good planning and trying to ram them through without community input is bad governance.
My mistake on the Plymouth project for the axe guy. As @22 noted it was Alder Flats (a similar project). The point still remains we had a drugged out, insane axe murderer brought into the community by one of these projects (he was from North Bend). We should be wary when it comes to families and kids but you have drunken the progressive/urbanists kool aid and think if we put these people in a box all will magically be better.

Even now, you are only compounding your mistake. 😆 The Kenmore Plymouth project was for “permanent supportive housing.” The Seattle Alder Flats project was for “affordable housing.” These are not remotely similar types of housing.
Permanent supportive housing is subsidized, leased housing with no limit on length of stay that prioritizes people who need comprehensive support services to retain tenancy. Permanent supportive housing is paired with on-site or off-site voluntary services designed to support a person living with a complex and disabling behavioral health or physical health condition who was experiencing homelessness or was at imminent risk of homelessness.
Affordable housing is residential housing whose monthly costs, including utilities other than telephone, do not exceed 30 percent of the monthly income of a household whose income is, in the case of Alder Flats, 65 percent of the median household income, adjusted for household size, for the county where the household is located.
Plymouth’s permanent supportive housing comes with on-site services and staff to help formerly homeless people with potential behavioral problems. Alder Flats’ affordable housing was just a regular old apartment where the rent was capped. I think you may be lumping everything into a single category of “scary poor people” and then assuming that the residents pose a threat on that basis. 😆 In reality, poor people aren’t as scary as you might fear, once you get to know them. 😄

Kryger (the axe murderer) was in Seattle in supportive housing. If not for that he wouldn’t have been there. He had a long history of mental health challenges and violence towards his family and others. He was allowed to move from North Bend to Seattle and two people are dead because of it. If you want to discount that or push it off as anti poor that’s your choice but people who live near these facilities have a right to be concerned about who is in their neighborhood.
