Perfect: As someone who is becoming more and more appreciative of cloud cover, I am really looking forward to the weather today. This morning will start out mostly cloudy with temperatures in the mid 60s. The sun should come out a little more around noon, and temperatures will continue to rise until we hit the low 70s. Perfect day to wear big pants, little top.
Charges dropped: Yesterday, prosecuters dropped charges against 46 anti-genocide protesters arrested this spring for blocking the Airport Expressway entrance at SeaTac. The South Seattle Emerald has more.
Sawant’s mistake: As Danny Westneat wrote in his column for the Seattle Times, Seattle’s most notorious former council member, Kshama Sawant, who is famous for her strong, Marxist principles and her relentless campaign ground game, revealed that leaving her council office at the end of 2023 was a “mistake.” That admission, combined with her recent return to City Hall in defense of the minimum wage law made me think, “Holy shit, what if she challenges Council President Sara Nelson in 2025?? Think of drama, the tension, the THINK PIECES for christ’s sake!” But Sawant told The Stranger yesterday that she does not plan to run. She added: “The Council does need to be challenged and replaced. That will require genuine working-class, Left, independent campaigns based on concrete demands, however. The pro-big-business and anti-worker politicians, including Council Member Nelson and Mayor Harrell, were elected in the first place because of progressive Democratic candidates, whose campaigns were mealy-mouthed and did not take a clear position on working-class issues.” Who’s it gonna be?
Very demure: Cutesy memers at King County Metro hopped on the latest TikTok trend. What do we think? Is the meme over when it becomes a PR strategy, or does public transit get a pass?
You see how we ride public transit? Very mindful. Very demure.

Justice for Sonya Massey: After Deputy Sean Grayson shot and killed Illinois mother Sonya Massey in her home earlier this summer, her family now advocates for a nationwide database of police violations and mandatory, comprehensive background checks for police job applicants. Massey family attorney Antonio Romanucci described Grayson as a “ticking time bomb.” Grayson worked at six different law enforcement agencies in the past four years, his long list of disciplinary issues pushing him from department to department rather than ending his career.
Based: Some of the most expensive prescription drugs are about to get a lot of cheaper thanks to a deal President Joe Biden struck.
He’s broke, she’s up: New polling shows Vice President Kamala Harris may dominate the swing states. She’s beating President Donald Trump in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, North Carolina and Arizona, and tying him in Georgia. Trump only leads in one swing state, Nevada, according to the new survey. This is a big shift for Democrats. The same pollsters conducted a similar pull in May, when the Democrats still planned to run President Joe Biden again. At the time, Trump led Biden in every swing state except for Wisconsin. But it is unclear if the numbers reflect lasting love for Harris or her new candidate shine, according to Politico.
Mark your calendars: Yesterday, vice presidential candidate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz agreed to a debate with JD Vance on Oct 1. He made some remarks casting doubt on whether his opponent will show up, cut this morning Vance agreed to the debate and also asked Walz to join him for another face-off on Sept 18. Your move, Walz!
Olympics may be over, but you can still cheer for newly crowned Olympic champion Imane Khelif, who faced a tidal wave of transphobic, sexist, and racist harassment after boxing really well. Khelif filed a criminal complaint to French authorities over alleged “acts of aggravated cyber harassment,” according to Variety. The lawsuit named notorious transphobes JK Rowling and Elon Musk, but anyone who participated in the hate campaign, including former President Donald Trump, Libs of Tik Tok’s Chaya Raichik, and YouTuber Logan Paul, could face investigation as well.

ICYMI: The United Auto Workers union filed labor charges against Telsa CEO Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump for threatening to intimidate striking workers during their interview on Twitter Monday. Trump said to Musk, “I look at what you do, you walk in and you just say, ‘You want to quit?’ They go on strike – I won’t mention the name of the company – but they go on strike, and you say, ‘That’s okay, you’re all gone. You’re all gone. Every one of you is gone.” Then Musk laughed a little and said “yeah.” What a fucking idiot to admit that and what a sick, sick greedy freak to do that to workers in the first place. Go to hell, Musk. Or at least pay a fat settlement!
More trouble: A Democratic PAC called End Citizens United filed a complaint against Trump and X because they allege the recent interview violated Federal Election Commission regulations. The PAC’s president, Tiffany Muller, said, “The Donald Trump-Elon Musk campaign rally hosted on X wasn’t just an incoherent diatribe of lies marred by technical difficulties, it was a blatantly illegal corporate contribution to Donald Trump’s campaign. This brazen corporate contribution undermines campaign finance laws and would set a dangerous precedent for unfettered, direct corporate engagement in campaigns.”

Another one: Columbia University President Minouche Shafik resigned from her position. She said the encampment protest for Palestine, which she described as a “period of turmoil where it has been difficult to overcome divergent views across our community,” took a “considerable toll on my family, as it has for others in our community.” According to the BBC, Shafik’s resignation marks the third president of an Ivy League university to resign over her handling of student protests for Gaza.
Power outage: According to Puerto Rico’s main power company, LUMA Energy, almost 1 million Puerto Ricans—about half of all households—are without power after Category 1 hurricane Ernesto swept over the island yesterday.
Matthew Perry: Cops arrested at least one person in Southern California this morning in connection to Friends actor Matthew Perry’s death last October. Federal prosecutors will unseal documents later today and then we’ll know more.

fwiw the charges were not dropped against the airport protestors, they agreed to a plea deal and if they complete the terms of that deal the charges will be dismissed. The terms include attending all court hearings, having no further criminal charges for three months and no stepping on airport property except to travel. They can also complete 10 hours of community service. So if any of these people participate in another blocking protest the charges will be reinstated. Personally I think there should be a monetary fine as well but its a start.
For a different look here is how SF is handling the protestors who blocked the Golden Gate Bridge a couple months ago: https://sfstandard.com/2024/08/10/goldengatebridge-protesters-criminally-charged-over-gaza-demonstration/
From the article “The San Francisco district attorney’s office announced the charges against 26 protesters early Saturday, saying the April 15 demonstration went beyond an exercise of free speech and endangered members of the public. Eight of the protesters stand accused of a count each of felony conspiracy, trespassing, obstructing a thoroughfare, refusal to disperse a riot and failure to obey a lawful police order, and 38 counts of false imprisonment. Eighteen others are charged with misdemeanor versions of the same charges.”
@46 here’s a couple of the moral monsters. They should be so ashamed of themselves

“but only

You’ve stated repeatedly that by your definition of “genocide,”(whatever it is) that you could not say whether or not Hamas’ actions on 10/7 and afterwards (e.g. firing rockets indiscriminately into Israel from Rafah) constituted “genocide.” Now you’re saying you’ve made that determination, that Hamas killing of Jews, for being Jews, on land Hamas has vowed to cleanse of Jews, is indeed not “genocide.”
Thank you, that clears things up considerably.
@51
@42 So women punching women in the head is perfectly OK?
“Boxing is an intrinsically brutal, barbaric activity that has no legitimate place in the modern Olympics or civilized society at large. It is not a sport and cannot be made “safe” for women or anyone else. Obsessing over the sex or gender of individual participants serves no purpose other than to obscure that essential truth.”
Congratulations, for giving an answer to a question that was not asked. The issue here is not boxing. It is women’s sports, as a category, being preserved, OR NOT, for women. Are you OK with weightlifting as a sport? Well, in the last Olympics, the misogynists in the IOC welcomed Gavin “Laurel” Hubbard, the 41 year old white male son of a millionaire New Zealand politician, into the women’s weightlifting competition. He displaced a teenage Pacific Islander woman. You OK with that? Or how about track? Does that sport meet your tender sensibilities? We already had the episode of Caster Semenya and two other males with DSD taking all three medals in the Olympic 800 meter race; the first actual woman is listed in the records as coming in fourth. And now we have this prick, a 51 year old man, who is about to compete in the women’s category in the paralympics, after winning championships for years in the male category, where he belongs.
https://unherd.com/newsroom/trans-paralympian-is-another-blow-to-womens-sport/ Were you alright with “Lia” Thomas, who swam on the U Penn men’s team for three years, ranking something like 450th nationally (i.e. mediocre) declaring himself to have woman feels, and the NCAA permitting him to compete against women? Where he somehow, miraculously, was defeating actual Olympians, and threatening women’s national and world records? Nothing about him changed, except the sex of his competition.
Wake the F up: this is an assault on the rights of girls and women. It’s an assault on gays and lesbians, too: you can’t protect same-sex rights in law and society when you can’t define sex.
So, go back to my original question, and deal with it on a broader basis: are you alright with men punching women in the head? With men stealing spots in the races and weightlifting competitions that are supposed to be for women? With men spiking volleyballs so hard that women are hurt so badly their careers are ended? Do you think women are deserving of their own category, or not? Choose!
@57: I stand by my interpretation of your statement @46, because in it, you sneer that all persons inconvenienced by the protestors “are the Real Victims here.” But maybe I’m attributing to your writing a clarity it normally lacks. Let’s say you were not referring to all persons inconvenienced by the protestors. To whom did you refer?
Perhaps your ‘moral monsters’ are not persons inconvenienced (or worse) by “[the protestors’] self-indulgently
obstreperous posturing,” but rather those persons who complain about “[the protestors’] self-indulgently
obstreperous posturing”? If that is the correct interpretation of @46, then the persons referenced @55 are indeed your ‘moral monsters,’ because they’re not merely complaining about “[the protestors’] self-indulgently obstreperous posturing,” they’re complaining about it in a legal document, as part of an effort to prove felony charges against the protestors, for the “[the protestors’] self-indulgently obstreperous posturing”.
Such monsters!

@65: I never claimed the protestors’ self-indulgently obstreperous posturing had ever inconvenienced me in the slightest, so your sneering reference to “moral monsters” who are “are the Real Victims here” could not possibly have referred to me. That you’ve now ham-handedly declared it did — but only after you got called on sneering at actual victims of the protestors’ self-indulgently obstreperous posturing — just adds to the humor value you provide here.
On the topic of “moral monsters,” well, the SF protestors trapped a small child in a car for hours without food. Yet you don’t seem to have any words of condemnation for those protestors, not even after their self-indulgently obstreperous posturing recklessly endangered a child. Perhaps your own moral sensibilities aren’t as worthy of respect as you seem to believe they are?

@71: Nah, we Secret Agents of AIPAC don’t ever have to register, because we control your government. We control you. (We’d even control your brain, in the ludicrously unlikely event you could ever possibly have hoped to have had one.) We’re everywhere, all the time, and no one will ever believe you when you tell them about us. Go ahead, try!
Our absolute control of your “thinking” can be seen in this very thread. We caused you to sneer at the suffering of a young child, who was trapped by the self-indulgently obstreperous posturing of Pro-Palestinian protestors. Why would we want to make you look like such a hopelessly depraved ghoul? Because we Secret Agents of AIPAC want you to exemplify all that is wrong about the Pro-Palestinian protestors in America, that’s why.
In many other threads, we’ve easily forced you to do Hamas’ bidding: blame Israel for all casualties in Gaza. Treat every causality there as an innocent civilian, ignoring all the Hamas terrorists killed. Shout the word “genocide” like you could ever possibly hope to know what it means. Shout the word “genocide” at Israel and only at Israel, even as Hamas continues to kill Jews, for being Jews, on land Hamas has vowed to cleanse of Jews. We have forced you to express all of these thoughts, and many, many other depraved thoughts, and even to believe they were your ideas — as if you could ever possibly hope to have such a thing! So fully do we command America. And you.
Now run along, and continue to do whatever we Secret Agents of AIPAC tell you to do. (It’s not like you could ever possibly have had a choice…)
“Our absolute control of your “thinking” can be seen in this very thread. We caused you to sneer at the suffering of a young child, who was trapped by the self-indulgently obstreperous posturing of Pro-Palestinian protestors.”

It makes our national leaders complicit in all of those crimes, proves their violent racism, and proves that we haven’t fundamentally changed since the 19th century.”

“The affidavit cites one woman who missed a pre-op appointment for brain surgery to remove a tumor in her temporal lobe. Another woman told investigators she ran out of water for infant formula and missed a pre-surgery doctor visit for her baby.”
The Pro-Palestinian protestors’ ‘need’ to prance, preen, and pose their purity in public meant an infant had to go without food, and miss a medical appointment. For someone always moaning about children in Gaza, you certainly do not seem to care about a child here in the United States, needlessly endangered by the self-indulgently obstreperous posturing of Pro-Palestinian protestors.

“The phrase ‘every accusation is a confession’ has been thrown around a lot since October, and for good reason. People who are deeply messed up and dysfunctional inside don’t typically have the internal resources and creativity to come up with accusations out of thin air, so they tend to just accuse people they don’t like of whatever they have going on inside themselves.
If you ever have to deal with a malignant narcissist or sociopath in your personal life, you can often understand their behavior a lot better by mentally reversing the accusations they level at people and interpreting them as confessions about themselves.”
