One more for the blue: After a neck-in-neck race, Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez officially won re-election to the House in the 3rd Congressional District, beating out far-right challenger Joe Kent. Her win is another step forward for Democrats as they try to take back the House and retain a shred of power in the coming administration from hell. About two dozen races nation-wide still need to be decided.
Please spare us, H5N1: The Centers for Disease Control want more testing done for bird flu after blood tests on 115 of dairy workers showed 7% had bird flu antibodies, meaning they’d already contracted the disease at some point. Previously, we only confirmed 46 cases of bird flu jumping from cows to farmworkers. This new study suggests that bird flu has infected many more people than the confirmed cases. Experts say this indicates the H5N1 viruses are a greater threat than we realized. Great! Another flu just in time for the vaccine-doubters to take office.
Wet weekend—and then week—ahead: Friday will likely be our last dry day for a while. Get your galoshes ready. The rain starts Saturday and it’ll continue at least throughout the week.
I hope you like rain this weekend! 🌧️

That’s nice: Boeing said it will pay the employees the money they lost while being furloughed during the machinists’ strike that started in September.
Egyptian flooding: A pipe leak at the historic Egyptian Cinema on Capitol Hill shut down the 108-year-old theater for the “foreseeable future.” Repairs will be expensive and take months. The universe does not want me or my people (progressives, art house movie lovers) to be happy this week.
INBOX: The SIFF Cinema Egyptian is going to be closed for “the foreseeable future and the Fine Arts building leadership expect that it will take multiple months of building closure to assess, repair and reopen.” Sad news especially during what is a big time of the year for film. pic.twitter.com/v2ItPx5Lpi

Another hit while we’re down: Don’t forget, five light rail stops will close this weekend. Starting at 10 pm on Friday through 5 am Monday, Westlake, Symphony, Pioneer Square, International District/Chinatown, and Stadium stations will all be closed and inaccessible. Trains will run between Lynnwood and Capitol Hill and between Sodo and Angle Lake. Shuttle buses will be available to bridge gaps between open and closed stations. It’s all part of the crawling effort to connect Line 1 to the Eastside line.
Sign of the times: Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale rocketed to the top of Amazon’s bestsellers list this week.
Racist texts: In the days after the election, Black and Brown people across the country received spammy, racist texts telling them they had “been selected to pick cotton at the nearest plantation” and that the senders’ “executive slave catchers” would pick them up. State attorney generals say they will root out who sent these texts. A second Donald Trump term means the masks covering the depravity in America are well and truly off. Racists are emboldened.
Nobody panic: Forty-three monkeys escaped from a medical lab in South Carolina. “There is almost no danger to the public,” a local police chief said. No danger? Isn’t this how Planet of the Apes started?
Israeli soccer fans attacked in Amsterdam: Israel’s Maccabi Tel Aviv and Dutch’s Ajax faced off in a Europa League soccer game Thursday. After the game, people attacked Israelis in hit-and-run scooter attacks. Five Israeli fans went to the hospital, but have since been released. Around 20 to 30 other Israelis sustained light injuries. Police arrested 63 people, and ten are still in custody. Context, as always, is important. In the days leading up to the match, social media videos showed Maccabi fans “chanting anti-Arab slurs, praising Israeli military attacks in Gaza, and yelling ‘fuck the Arabs,'” according to CNN. Ajax won the game 5-0.
And now, something from Ashley about the cops:
Fill’er up: The King County Jail officially lifted misdemeanor booking restrictions for the Seattle Police Department (SPD) allowing officers to finally lock up all those pesky Target shoplifters and people who tried to use the bathroom at PCC one too many times and ended up trespassed. I wrote about how SPD Deputy Chief Eric Barden told officers in a department wide email Tuesday that they should book people into jail whenever a public safety interest existed and only show additional discretion when the department neared their misdemeanor bed limit of 135 people per day. Most people charged with misdemeanors spend less than a week in jail, so could be a lot of people cycling through, which King County Department of Public Defense Interim Director Matt Sanders said will ultimately make it harder for people to hold down jobs, maintain housing, and secure behavioral health treatment, ultimately undermining public safety in the city.
Did you hear about San Francisco’s new mayor? He’s a centrist Democrat and he’s the heir to the Levi’s fortune. Daniel Lurie won the ranked-choice voting election with 56.2% of the vote. Incumbent London Breed only received 43.8%. San Franciscans made clear they are sick of seeing poverty and being confronted with crimes of desperation. Unfortunately, as we know very well in Seattle, electing a centrist may hide the problems for a bit, but it will do nothing to fix them.
A porn gorge: North Korean soldiers deployed in Russia have unrestricted internet access for the first time in their lives and they’re using it to watch mountains of porn and jerk themselves silly. Boys will be boys!
Need something to do tonight? The world is bleak. Why not laugh a little at an improv show? The improv theater I wrote about for my column is having a battle of the star signs show tonight followed by an open-to-all improv jam. I’ll be performing on the Scorpio team even though I’m not a Scorpio (don’t tell anyone).
A song for your Friday: This just feels like the sound of my psyche right now.

Yes Matt, I’m sure that’s exactly what they are doing with their free time. lol. I think it would be more accurate to say it will give them less time to use and sell drugs, steal from local businesses and otherwise harass people who are just trying to survive the big dark without someone screaming at them on the street for no reason.
Neck-in-neck? Who says that? No one. It’s not even a normal wrong thing like “could care less”.
It’s neck and neck.
@1 Trump got 22% of the vote in King County in 2016. Then he got 22% of the vote in King County in 2020. And now he’s getting 22% of the vote in King County in 2024. I think we’re doing fine.
@9, Other than insisting on things that drive those outside of King County to vote for the fascist, we are doing fine. Agree.
@3,
No shit talk on the union strike efforts today, huh? Smart move.
@10: They didn’t vote for a fascist per se, they voted for “taking Trump figuratively rather than seriously” was better than choosing Kamala Harris, mainly because of inflation and immigration and she represented a failed incumbent administration.
How many of the DNC lobbyists will lose their job over this?
0?
On the plus side Blinken and co can now return to their corporate consulting gigs to capitalize on their insider status … until next time.
@12. That’s enough.
“The path not taken in 2016 looms larger than ever. Bernie’s coalition was filled with the exact type of voters who are now flocking to Donald Trump: Working class voters of all races, young people, and, critically, the much-derided bros. The top contributors to Bernie’s campaign often held jobs at places like Amazon and Walmart. The unions loved him. And—never forget—he earned the coveted Joe Rogan endorsement that Trump also received the day before the election this year.”
https://rootsaction.org/news-a-views/3507-bernie-would-have-won
@15, Unfortunately that ship had a narrow sailing window that has come and gone.
@16 The election of Trump in spite of his piss poor likability rating is prima facie evidence that said window hasn’t gone: voters DESPERATELY want an alternative to neoliberalism and corporatism. They’ll vote anybody in that will acknowledge the economy isn’t working for them.
The Maccabi Tel Aviv fans disrupted the minutes silence prior to kick off for the lives lost in the Spanish floods because Spain suspended arms sales to Israel. Seems a bit like they fucked around and found out tbh
This red in this map is stunning. The only states that are all red are OK and WV, and the only all blue state is CT.

@17, The window is gone to capture those voters. They have hitched their wagon to Trump and the Republican brand.
Bernie 2016: “Nobody is making the argument I am making on your behalf. I’m the only alternative in town.”
Bernie (or some Democrat taking up his banner) 2028: “The Republican brand is making the same argument I made in 2016 for their current candidate. I can deliver better than Trump did, and better than his likely successor.”
The 2028 argument is a lot harder to make when you aren’t the only person claiming to be the disruptor of the status quo. You just split that segment of the electorate with the other person trying to claim that mantle.
A prediction. BIDEN will retaliate, with a limited air-strike on Iran for this:
https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/08/politics/doj-charges-three-iranian-plot-to-kill-donald-trump/index.html
@20 Nonsense. Voters won’t attach to a brand that won’t deliver over and over again. Republicans are most unlikely to do that because it entails reversing the economic inequalities incurred over the last 40 years
I highly recommend this interview (I’ll ignore that our media couldn’t be bothered) – https://www.nytimes.com/2024/11/08/us/politics/marie-gluesenkamp-perez-interview.html#
If you want to know how to win at the national level, here are some great insights.
@9- we’re doing fine except that we have to live with 22% assholes.
@21- Biden should not lift a finger in response. The old rules are on the way out even as we speak, thanks to Trump. He should reap what he sows.
@25, I wasn’t making any statement about “should” or “shouldn’t”, just stating what I think will happen.
@23, FTW.

I am glad she won.
When people talk about Trump votes, I’m reminded of this classic scene from Blazing Saddles: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHJbSvidohg
Seriously though, it is difficult to convince an ignorant electorate. It always has been. The economy was the biggest issue (according to polls) by a wide margin. Yet the US has the best economy in the world. Our economy really doesn’t get better than this. So maybe the problem is that even in good times the middle class doesn’t have it that good? Fair enough. Except the party most responsible for destroying the middle class is the Republicans.
Which is not to say there aren’t reasons to vote Republican. If you want to see abortion restricted, then vote Republican. If you are wealthy (and greedy) then vote Republican, especially if you want to engage in the kind of unregulated wheeling and dealing that led to the Great Recession. If you think that Global Warming doesn’t exist (or is not a big deal) then of course you voted Republican. Same with those who feel like Russia has every right to occupy Ukraine and Netanyahu is doing a great job.
But the people who were the difference makers in this election — the ones that allowed Trump to win were, you know, morons.
@26: Not likely to be an airstrike. Inchoate, poorly resourced assassination plots are a dime a dozen, not something to order an airstrike over.
During the Iraq War, the Iranians organized, financed, and armed the killing of hundreds of US troops and we still didn’t kill any of them until Trump killed Qassim Soleimani years afterward. We did detain a couple dozen Iranian officers in Iraq during the war, but they were all released or else turned over to the Iraqis to be released.
If killing hundreds of troops doesn’t merit a kinetic response, a half-baked, no-action assassination plot certainly won’t either, lol! If President Biden wanted to shoot at Iranians, they’ve handed him plenty of excuses already. He’s not going to seize on this latest one, weak as it is.
@28 (and @23 FYI):
https://www.seattletimes.com/opinion/voters-to-elites-do-you-see-me-now/
@28
And yet, in politics, perception is everything. If the non-college educated have less than $400 in savings, telling them that the economy is great comes across as arrogant.
Millions have heard the clarion call of “I alone can fix it!”, and they clearly are listening.
@31 He’s good at slogans. “Trump Can Fix It” is stupid but effective, since it appeals to the stupid.
If you ask me, the racist texts are coming from Russia, either directly or through a paid agent here in the US.
@33- agree. The other possibility is China.
@25- thanks for the clarification.
@28 Ross, the only thing more appalling than your condescension is your ignorance. You, of all people, need to read the two Seattle Times pieces linked in this string.
Two brilliant quotes from Brooks:
“Donald Trump is a monstrous narcissist, but there’s something off about an educated class that looks in the mirror of society and sees only itself.”
and
“In 2024, [Trump] built the very thing the Democratic Party once tried to build — a multiracial, working-class majority. His support surged among Black and Hispanic workers. He recorded astonishing gains in places like New Jersey, the Bronx, Chicago, Dallas and Houston. According to the NBC exit polls he won a third of voters of color. He’s the first Republican to win a majority of the votes in 20 years.”
You could try to learn something from the past week (or, really, the last eight years). Or you can continue to just call people stupid… and tell them this is the best economy they can get(!!!)… and see where that gets you.
The economy is doing great. Yeah, a box of cherrios is 7 dollars. Rent is out of control. Etc etc etc. This isn’t hard. Offer some fucking solutions. Trump (and yes, I know it’s never happening) was offering tax-free tips and tax-free over time. Let’s be honest, you’d all glance at that if you were working a job that relied upon either.
@38: This ‘analysis’ is all pretty funny. Turnout wins elections. The Stranger and supportive commenters were told in August that “Gaza Isn’t Driving Votes,” and what did they do? Continued to scream about Gaza. Why, if you just block enough ambulances, trap more hungry children in traffic, make more of your neighbors miss their flights, vandalize the UW HUB enough times, and march on enough campuses chanting sufficiently vile eliminationist hate rhetoric, THEN you’ll be driving votes! You must be! It simply must work!!
Enjoy another round of Trump. You and your darling Sawant have richly earned it.
@37 – Sure we had a couple of years of inflation. But it was lower than all the other developed countries. Remember that we survived double-digit inflation for years in the ’70s and ’80s. But somehow we managed not to elect a guy who pledged to destroy the US (Reagan at least claimed to GAF about America and I think on some misguided level he did). On the off-chance that the country survives this, maybe just maybe people will fucking learn something.
Oh, the racist texts may also be Fat Donald’s “thank you ” for voting him in. He’s already started to screw the voters he swindled.
Nice to see Nathalie Graham reminding us that “Context, as always, is important” when she describes the attacks on Israelis in Amsterdam. I couldn’t agree more.
By way of context, Graham notes that some of the fans of the Israeli team were “chanting anti-Arab slurs, praising Israeli military attacks in Gaza, and yelling ‘fuck the Arabs.'”
Despite Graham’s keen interest in context, she mysteriously fails to note that hundreds of Israelis and non-Israeli Jews were chased through the streets by knife-wielding mobs, forcing the victims to barricade themselves inside shops to escape. The mobs set up spontaneous checkpoints in the street to check the passports of passersby they suspected of being Israelis or Jews. The attackers yelled pro-Palestinian and anti-semitic slogans while they beat their victims. So that’s maybe some context that might be important, too. 😂😂😂
The Israelis should play in countries with more pro genocide fans.
@42: Actually, the Israelis should play in any country in which they are a league member. Don’t you think? 😉

Antisemitic Attacks on Soccer Fans
Physical and verbal violence erupted around a soccer match between an Israeli team and a Dutch team in Amsterdam on Thursday.
Videos showed Israeli fans shouting anti-Arab chants on their way to the match as the police escorted them near Amsterdam’s central train station to help ensure their safety amid anger over the war in Gaza.
One of the chants said: “Why is there no school in Gaza? There are no children left there.”
Tensions had been building in Amsterdam around Thursday’s game. Pro-Palestinian protests had been planned in the city for Thursday, a day after Amsterdam’s mayor, Femke Halsema, banned protests near the stadium in an effort to stave off violence.
But on Wednesday night, Israeli fans vandalized a taxi and burned a Palestinian flag, the Dutch police say.

@55 actually it is calling out the moral depravity of collective punishment.
But as you pointed out, some people need things black and white. You are petty quick to label those who disagree with you as jew haters. But I guess that is easier than trying to defend ( or ignore) the ethnic cleansing and collective punishment in Gaza and the West Bank. (And, your raindrop is showing, dear)
Hint: they are saying the quiet part out loud now. Israel will continue, unsuccessfully , to pound the Hamas out of the Palestinians.
@58: It’s also calling out the moral depravity of mob and vigilante ‘justice,’ all of which kristo’ finds no problem with.
“Israel will continue, unsuccessfully , to pound the Hamas out of the Palestinians.”
Hamas should not have kidnapped Israeli civilians, should not have abducted them into Gaza, and should not use the civilians in Gaza, and civilian infrastructure of Gaza, as shields against the IDF. As Hamas has freely chosen to do all of the above, explicitly with the intent of increasing civilian casualties in Gaza, Hamas bears responsibility for Israel’s pounding Hamas out of Gaza.
(As for whether it’s been “successful” or not, well, you can ask Sinw— oops, maybe not.)
@58: “You are petty quick to label those who disagree with you as jew haters.”
Only the ones who hate Jews, lol!
Always delighted to see the Judean People’s Front debating issues of the day with the People’s Front of Judea.
@60: Kristo’ (@56) now justifies European soccer hooligans’ mob violence and vigilante ‘justice’ on the grounds that all Israelis everywhere bear personal culpability for their government’s policies. This equates to saying any Californian, Washingtonian, or New Yorker out in the world over the next four years deserves to get violently attacked by a local mob, for whatever dumbass destructive policies Trump will nonconsensually inflict on everyone.
Watching the Stranger’s fanatically-intolerant position on Gaza work dark magic here provides a great, if horrific, fascination.
@62: Jewish issues have always been pure kryptonite for progressives.
I wonder how Auntie Grizelda is doing.

@65: New details emerging from Amsterdam. Violence began no later than the day before the soccer game:
“Bitton was inside the glitzy Holland Casino on Wednesday—the night before the high-profile Maccabi-Ajax soccer match—when he saw two of his friends coming toward the blackjack and poker tables with bloodied faces.
“Outside the casino, Bitton said, he saw around 200 people—many of them Arabic speakers, he said—waiting for the Israeli fans to leave the casino.”
Mob actions appear to have been coordinated before then:
‘Messaging app Telegram was used to talk about “going on Jew hunts,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said. “This is so shocking and despicable that I cannot get over it yet. It is a disgrace,” she said.
‘A screenshot of a pro-Palestinian WhatsApp group chat, viewed by the Journal, called for a “Jew Hunt” on Thursday and referred to a standoff on Wednesday night in which a group of Israeli fans were cornered by a crowd that police said included taxi drivers who had responded to an online call to mobilize.’
(https://www.wsj.com/world/europe/calls-for-jew-hunt-preceded-attacks-in-amsterdam-e3311e21)
So, was that aforementioned taxi vandalized, or was it damaged by persons trying to escape an attack, where the taxi had been used as a weapon against them?

To be clear, none of the Jews who were attacked in the Amsterdam Jew hunt had killed anyone’s children. Just in case that point was lost on people like Kristofarian! 😉
@69: You do understand the attacks, specifically upon ‘Jews,’ were planned the day BEFORE anyone headed to the soccer game, right?
Furthermore, the words you keep obsessively quoting would, in the United States, be political speech, fully protected under the First Amendment.
You seem very eager to justify violence against persons who say things you happen not to like.
Anti-Israel protestors: [Burn countless Israeli flags. Racist, violent chants in every city]
Israelis: Your language is hurtful. Please don’t talk that way.
…
Israelis: [Burn one Palestinian flag. Racist, violent chants in one city]
Anti-Israel protestors: Whaaaat!!! OK, motherfuckers, JEW HUNT!!!
Anti-Israel protestors: [chasing, beating stabbing Israelis and non-Israeli Jews]
Kristofarian: My goodness, those awful Jews should have kept their heads down!
@72: It’s also fun to note meaning depends upon context. Whereas kristo’ simply assumes the Israeli soccer fans were gloating about having killed children by proxy, they could actually have been saying, “Hamas lavishly used your children as human shields, and look what has happened. Don’t blame us for Hamas’ gutless cowardice.”
However, kristo’ already yet again, told us (@65) that he has pre-emptively rejected any mention of Hamas, so that interpretation is not open to him.

“What happened in Amsterdam is primarily a reflection of hatred by many Muslims against the State of Israel and its citizens, because of what is transpiring in our region.
It is not a continuation of the historic antisemitism that swept Europe in past centuries, the sources of which are Christian religious fanaticism and a lack of tolerance for the Jewish people in general.
The fact is, many people in the world are unable to acquiesce with Israel turning Gaza, or residential neighborhoods of Beirut, into the Stone Age — as some of our leaders promised to do.
And that is to say nothing of what Israel is doing in the West Bank — the killings and destruction of Palestinian property.
Are we really surprised that these things create a wave of hostile reactions when we continue to show a lack of sensitivity to human beings living in the center of the battlefield who are not terrorists?

Top Comment from nyt’s readership:
“What happened in Amsterdam is primarily a reflection of hatred by many Muslims against the State of Israel and its citizens, because of what is transpiring in our region.”
Not just Muslims. Many Westerners are appalled at the actions of Israel. This isn’t about religion.
It’s about those who want international law followed and human rights respected vs. those who only care about those things when they’re the victims.
It’s about holding everyone to the same standard.
It’s about showing that every life is valued.

@75: Soccer hooligans in Europe get drunk and say foolish things. If they get rowdy, then throw ‘em jail until they dry out, and if they are visitors, expel them. Problem solved.
In this case, some of the locals responded to alleged soccer hooliganism not by calling the police, but by organizing “Jew hunts.” . That is the very epitome of classic European intolerance of Jews. In the United States, we would call it conspiracy to commit hate crimes, and we would punish it harshly. We should never go looking for justifications for it.
You really seem to enjoy justifying violence against persons who say things you happen not to like.

@77: Your problems with the word, “genocide,” are not my problems, but your failed act of not caring about my comments never gets old.
Thanks for spending most of this thread validating my statement @62, first by calling it a lie @65, then by continuing your attempts to justify premeditated, organized violence against Amsterdam’s Jews, on the grounds some Israelis may have said some things you didn’t like. Collective punishment of European Jews is how you fight Fascism!

Pass.
@79: When they were no longer able to deny a “Jew Hunt” had occurred, the other commenters who’d pursued “the Israeli soccer fans had it coming” angle simply gave up and quit this thread. But not you. Your alloy of malice and ignorance proved stronger than fact, at least for awhile.
As I commented on Slog awhile ago, part of the fun here comes from watching your masks slip. All of your pompous moral posturing, all of your preening about how much more you care about innocent human lives than anyone else — it all slowly falls away, and we see you’re not upset at people dying, you’re upset at the ‘wrong’ people dying. Violence against the innocent is a-ok with you, so long as they belong to the groups — or even say some things! — you despise.
Thank you for making that clear in this thread.
