Welcome to Day 10 of the 2025 Government Shutdown: Yesterday, despite the shutdown, the senate passed the $925 billion national defense bill, which allows everything from new submarines and fighter jets to an annual pay increase for troops. That said, because of the shutdown, members of the military may not get their paychecks—for the first time in the history of America—come October 15.
Trump Did Not Win the Nobel Peace Prize: Hahahahahahahahaha! He wanted it so badly, too. Loser.
María Corina Machado Wins Nobel Peace Prize: She is an opposition leader in Venezuela who lost the 2024 election to President Nicolás Maduro. The prize committee praised her for “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.” Kind of the opposite vibes of ol’ Trumpty Dumpty’s vibes! Sorry, Don!
Ceasefire in Effect: Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire in Gaza. Now both sides have 72 hours to make good on their side of the deal—Hamas will release the 20 remaining Israeli hostages and Israel will release “around 250 Palestinian prisoners and 1,700 detainees from Gaza.” The BBC also reports that “about 600 humanitarian aid trucks are expected to enter Gaza daily.” Read Trump’s full 20-point Gaza peace plan here.
Seattle School Board Rejects Cops at Garfield: The plan, supported by Mayor Harrell, would’ve placed a uniformed SPD officer on Garflied’s campus, but Capitol Hill Seattle reports that the school board had “concerns over disproportionate policing and the district’s failure to implement community recommendations in its proposal.”
Trump Cannot Send the National Guard to Chicago: Yesterday, a US district judge ruled that the Trump administration cannot “federalize or deploy” the national guard to Illinois for two weeks because she had “seen no credible evidence that there is a danger of a rebellion in the state of Illinois.” The Trump administration will likely appeal.
And! The National Guard Can’t Fuck with Protestors in Chicago, Either: A federal judge in Chicago also granted a temporary restraining order yesterday, blocking federal agencies from interfering with protestors and any journalists covering those protests. They can’t arrest or use physical force against journalists and they can’t use “riot control” weapons including tear gas and other “less-lethal” weapons and ammunition against protestors.
Oregon Might Not Be So Lucky: Yesterday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals began considering whether or not the Trump administration is allowed to deploy the national guard to “war ravaged” Portland. The 9th Circuit Court ruled on Saturday that they could not be deployed, but the Trump administration appealed the ruling and now the appeals court is being a butt about it. Judge Ryan Nelson, one of three judges on the panel (and a Trump-appointee) doesn’t really see a problem with it. “What I’m struggling with is, the president gets to direct his resources as he deems fit, and it just seems a little counterintuitive to me that the city of Portland can come in and say ‘No. You need to do it differently,'” he said. EXCEPT FOR THAT TRUMP IS LYING??? There’s no war-torn city! There is no insurrection! Trump and his fascist bootlickers are trying to supress freedom of speech and the right to assemble because they want to shut up the people who are protesting his administration’s ILLEGAL ABDUCTIONS OF AMERICAN CITIZENS.

My Brain Hurts: It was very hard to make sense of all the lawsuits and rulings and the national guard can be deployed here but not here at least for now but not later nonsense so early in the morning so please join me while I take a soothing brain break and watch a baby hippo named Mars refuse to get out of the pool.
Okay, let’s dive back into Hell!
Remember When Qatar Gave Trump a Luxury Jet? Today Pete Hegseth announced the US will build “a Qatari Emeri air force facility at the Mountain Home Airbase in Idaho.”

MAGA Babies Plan “All-American Halftime Show”: The racist crybabies at Turning Point USA are so mad about American musician Bad Bunny being booked to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show that they’re planning their own “All-American” halftime show, which will also feature American performers. They’re asking supporters to vote on which music genres they’d like to see represented, including “Anything in English,” and some Turning Point dudes whose names I refuse to commit to memory say they want Creed to headline.
Seattle Sports Update: At 5 pm the Mariners will play Game 5 in their post-season series against Detroit and the anxiety is palpable. We are not used to playoff baseball! We have, as a city, forgotten how nervewracking it can be! The winner will advance to the American League Championship Series to take on the Toronto Blue Jays, who are not an American team. Baseball! In other sports news, the Seattle Kraken kicked off their 2025-26 by beating the unnecessarily orange Anaheim Ducks 3-1.
Perfect October Reading: In our latest issue, notable Seattle goth Bess Lovejoy wrote about the Comet Lodge Cemetery on Beacon Hill and all the little children who have haunted the area for generations. It’s a must-read, especially on this perfectly drizzly October day.
How about one more Mars video, as a palate cleanser?

ADT just slapping their stickers all over windows and making Seattle look like trash! Seattle is disgusting!
Donald Trump definitely should have received the Nobel Peace Prize. In a few weeks if this deal holds, Norway will regret it. Remember, Obama got it just for winning his election – he didn’t resolve any conflict.

Shooting in Seattle’s Capitol Hill leaves 1 dead, another injured; police seek suspect
by KOMO News Staff – Thu, October 9th 2025 at 9:10 PM
SEATTLE — A shooting in the Capitol Hill neighborhood left one person dead and another in serious condition Thursday evening, according to the Seattle Police Department (SPD).
The SPD confirmed the incident occurred near East Pike Street and Broadway. Officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire in the area.
Seattle Fire Department crews treated the victim at the scene before transporting them to Harborview Medical Center (HMC), according to the SPD.
At 9:09 p.m., the SPD posted on X that while investigating, officers learned of a second victim, a bystander, who arrived at HMC with a gunshot wound.
The SPD said as of 9:50 p.m., one of the shooting victims died while being operated on, while the second victim was reported to be in “serious condition.”
No suspect is in custody, police said, and officers are asking the public to avoid the area as the investigation continues. Police continued to note they believe multiple suspects were involved, and that all suspects fled the scene on foot.

You don’t have to like someone to acknowledge something they did was really good and if he does bring an end to the conflict in Gaza I hope we can all agree that is really good.
If trump was a normal president and the peace deal holds he would surely get his little award next year. Unfortunately he is currently busy deploying the military against his own people and i can only assume the peace prize people frown upon those kinds of things even if he did something cool somewhere else.
“Lawyers for the Department of Justice argued that Immergut “impermissibly second-guessed the Commander in Chief’s military judgments,” in briefs submitted to the 9th Circuit”
When Trump says a city is war torn who is a federal judge to look at the facts and determine that it isn’t? He has plenary authority!
@8 “A prior felony in the United States doesn’t preclude a Noble prize.”
What is that, like a store brand Nobel Prize? Some kind of participation trophy? Trump should definitely get one of those. The “medal” could be chocolate wrapped in gold foil.
You’re right… they’re probably more worried about the future felonies he’s about to incur when they finally find out how many women and underage girls he’s raped… and the fact that he’s constantly committing treason and war crimes against his own country… or whatever.

Considering that Henry Kissinger and Yasser Arafat were both awarded the prize while being unapologetic warmongers I’m not certain how much respect to give this Peace Prize.
@10 The real question is whether the current agreement brought an end to the conflict in Gaza. Sure, it brought an end to this phase. Which is great. But if it doesn’t lead to significant motion on a 2-state solution, if Hamas isn’t disarmed and kicked out, then it doesn’t resolve the underlying problem. We’ll just be back to where we were 3-5 years ago with a low-level conflict that flares up every now and then.
Maybe Trump will win it next year for accepting that gold plated personal jet as a bribe and then allowing them to build a Qatari Air Force Base in Idaho?
Trump is the king of peace? Nope. But maybe the king of children that won’t eat their peas… I take one second to think of the little boats of innocent fishermen that he is using giant missiles to kill. I don’t see this dumb fuck authoritarian stooge as a good example of a champion for peace. He is trying to create war abroad and at home so he can use that as an excuse to suspend elections or use the military to intimidate voters. Allowing his ICE InCEls (can’t spell Incel with ICE) to pop pepper balls into innocent protesters causing cranial and spinal damage. Go castrate yourselves MAGA, you rapist-pedophile protecting goon squad. and yeah FUCK YOU! Release the Epstein files, Trump is a Pedophile rapist LOSER!!!

Ross @22…
That sounds perfect. The chorus in English, the verses in Spanish, tweaked to reflect current times.
The slog commenters deserve the Nobel prize because two continuous years of them furiously typing endless hectoring screeds at each other has led to a lasting peace in Gaza.
I truly don’t understand the own goal that is TP’s alt Super Bowl halftime show. Very well said, my friend. Yet another example of President Trump’s stalwart support for a heroic opposition figure who’s standing up against a brutal, repressive regime, just like with Alexei Navalny or Jamal Khashoggi. It’s a good thing America has its swagger back defending democratic institutions worldwide against the rising tide of authoritarianism.
shoe-in for Nobel Sleaze prize next year for sure!
In recent statements, Hamas seems to be backpedaling on international supervision of governance in Gaza (Point 9 of the 20-point peace plan) and relinquishing its own role in the governance of Gaza (Point 13 of the 20-point peace plan). Hamas rejecting a peace plan? Who could possibly have foreseen it! 🤣
If Hamas can walk back the governance issues, then Israel is free to walk back its own commitments regarding cessation of air and artillery strikes in Gaza (Point 3) and increasing entry of aid into Gaza (Points 7 and 8). Though if I were the Israelis, I’d wait till I had all the hostages in hand before sending any heat downrange! 😄
Hopefully, Palestine’s friends around the world can move quickly to deploy the international stabilization force. The longer Hamas remains in Gaza, boasting about its intentions not to relinquish weapons or governance, the more likely it is that the Israelis will decide to take them at their word and starting lighting them up again! 😝 It’ll be just like the “Lebanon scenario,” except in a much smaller geographic footprint. 💥
Meanwhile Biped, if you want full coverage news, check the fucking news asshat.

This is a bit off topic, but wtf is up with the ad to “Rally to Elect Kshama Sawant to U.S. Congress” on October 12th??? Hard pass—-she endorsed El Taco Donaldo in 2024!
@33: No, because in previous comments, he expressed (GASP!) actual support for the peace deal, instead of just dumping all over it and saying it simply must fail.
Also, if you had this thing called “reading comprehension,” you’d know that @30 had, yet again, expressed hope the peace deal would succeed, and was calling out Hamas for endangering it.
@33: nah I’m hoping Hamas surrenders like the whole world is telling them to. You no? 😉
@30. Thumpus. Totally agree on the 1982 vibe right now. The Kabuki is to allow Hummus to surrender honorably, akin to some helpless besieged city that might be willing to “accept terms.” Or, as was/is custom (and right and proper), go full Ottoman.
Terms to Hummus; Lay down arms, and in the immortal words of Lord Humongous (preferred pronouns – Warrior of the Wasteland & Kingola of Rock and Rolla) “Just walk away.” Hummus leadership and hardcore fighters board vessels and, just as in the PLO’s all expenses paid cruise out of Beirut that year, depart for distant shores.
But where? I see two distinct options;
Send them to the “Epstein Islands” around St. James and basically enact the very policy that Yasser Arafat effected to his unruly Black September fighters…sex and housing. Here is a lovely recounting of the program, courtesy of….wait for it….Atlantic Monthly (2015).
https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2015/10/send-them-chocolate/626283/
Bring them to US shores. Deputize them. Deploy them to protect ICE facilities. Watch Trantifa melt in cognitive dissonance.
@38 “Terms to Hummus”
Can’t believe you’d forfeit your sophisticate persona for such a limp dick ethnic “joke”
@38: The Lebanon parallel I had in mind was less 1982 and more 2024. According to the 2024 ceasefire, Hizbollah is supposed to withdraw north of the Litani and disarm, and Israel is supposed to withdraw from southern Lebanon and stop air and arty strikes.
In reality, Hizbollah slow-rolled its withdrawal and disarmament, although it did all but stop shooting at the Israelis. In return, the Israelis retained their best firebases in Lebanon and continue to bomb Hizbollah whenever and wherever they want, but they don’t attempt to seize additional territory. 💥
It’s a win for Israel, in that Israel gets to hold on to its bases in Lebanon and gets to keep shooting at Hizbollah but Hizbollah doesn’t get to shoot at Israel. In exchange, Hizbollah gets to survive, at least for now … although the vultures in the Lebanese cabinet have started to circle. 😁
I anticipate a similar outcome in Gaza. Hamas will fake it on the disarmament and disempowerment fronts, which will justify Israel in holding onto the Yellow Line (roughly half of Gaza’s acreage) and conducting frequent airstrikes on HVIs and other such small-scale targets of opportunity. In exchange, and so long as Hamas doesn’t shoot back, they get to stay alive, at least until the vultures in the PA (backed by the international stabilization force) can pick their bones. 😎
@ too late for anyone to read…
I figure she dedicated her Peace Prize to Trump as a way of saying “please stop blasting our boats out of the water” through flattery.
Only thing that seems to work with him.
@40
So, yer sayin, Hezbollah followed the terms of the agreement, albeit slowly, and Israel didnt?
Why would anyone trust them again?
“Why aren’t the Free Palestine people cheering about the ceasefire?”
If you saw a man beating a child into a coma, would you cheer after the beating stopped? No, your first reaction would be horror at what happened and your second would be fear that he’ll attack the kid again.

Trump’s Sham Peace Plan
There will be no peace in Gaza.
Only the temporary absence of war.
There is no shortage of failed peace plans in occupied Palestine,
all of them incorporating detailed phases and timelines,
going back to the presidency of Jimmy Carter. They
end the same way. Israel gets what it wants initially
~in the latest case the release of the remaining
Israeli hostages!while it ignores and violates
every other phase until it resumes its
attacks on the Palestinian people.
It is a sadistic game.
A merry-go-round of death.
This ceasefire, like those of the past,
is a commercial break. A moment when the
condemned man is allowed to smoke a cigarette
before being gunned down in a fusillade of bullets.
Once Israeli hostages are released,
the genocide will continue. I do not know
how soon. Let’s hope the mass slaughter is delayed
for at least a few weeks. But a pause in the genocide
is the best we can anticipate. Israel is on the cusp of em-
ptying Gaza, which has been all but obliterated under two
years of relentless bombing. It is not about to be stopped.
This is the culmination of the Zionist dream.
The United States, which has given Israel
a staggering $22 billion in military aid
since Oct, 7, 2023, will not shut
down its pipeline, the only
tool that might halt
the genocide.
Israel,
as it always does,
will blame Hamas and
the Palestinians for failing
to abide by the agreement,
most probably a refusal~true
or not~to disarm, as the proposal
demands. Washington, condemning
Hamas’s supposed violation, will give
Israel the green light to continue its genocide
to create Trump’s fantasy of a Gaza Riviera and
“special economic zone” with its “voluntary” relo-
cation of Palestinians in exchange for digital tokens.

about You?
@46: Oh gawd. I suggest a better attitude.
@52: Hamas dropping its guns and leaving, you say? Why that’s Point 9, Point 13, Point 19, and Point 20 of the 20-point peace plan! 😁 Israel is all about it, but sadly Hamas is now saying that some of these points do not interest them. 😛
Very well, the duly elected government of Gaza is entitled to its position! 😆 But if Points 9, 13, 19, and 20 are off the table, then don’t expect Israel to abide by Point 3 (freeze the battle lines and no more air and arty strikes) or Point 16 (end the occupation and withdraw from Gaza). Peace deal gotta work both ways, you see? 😉 It’s land for peace, not land for nothing. 😂
The architects of the peace plan are not naive, least of all the plan’s pro-Hamas architects in Qatar and Turkey. If an international stabilization force actually goes in, the disarmament and disempowerment of Hamas can proceed even in the face of Hamas’s objections, and Israel would still have to follow its ceasefire and withdrawal obligations. (This is Point 17 of the plan.) 😃
As you can surely appreciate, this framework places the international stabilization force in the driver’s seat when it comes to securing a lasting peace. A strong force that actually disarms and disempowers Hamas will compel a rapid Israeli retreat, but a weak force that allows Hamas to fester will allow a continued Israeli occupation and counter-terrorist strike regime. So it’s largely up to the international community how serious they are about peace in Gaza. Take down Hamas, and this can all be over. Keep playing footsie with Hamas, and Israel will just have to mow the grass again. 💥💥💥 It’ll be just like Lebanon, except here it will be the international force that has to decide how hard to squeeze the terrorists, whereas in Lebanon, it’s the cabinet and the army. 😃
@42: “So, yer sayin, Hezbollah followed the terms of the agreement, albeit slowly, and Israel didnt?”
thumpus made the unjustifiably generous assumption you actually knew something about the topic upon which you commented, and you swiftly repaid him for his folly. (Hey, we understand; it’s probably the closest you’ll ever get to proving him wrong on something…)
UN Resolution 1701 [https://docs.un.org/en/S/RES/1701(2006)] required (among other things) Hizbollah to withdraw from the Israeli border, to north of the Litani River.
“It was unanimously approved by the United Nations Security Council on 11 August 2006. The Lebanese cabinet unanimously approved the resolution on 12 August 2006. On the same day, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said that his militia would honor the call for a ceasefire. He also said that once the Israeli offensive stops, Hezbollah’s rocket attacks on Israel would stop. On 13 August the Israeli Cabinet voted 24–0 in favor of the resolution, with one abstention. The ceasefire began on Monday, 14 August 2006 at 8 AM local time, after increased attacks by both sides.
“As of 2024, the resolution was not fully implemented. Hezbollah and other armed groups in southern Lebanon have not withdrawn at all; in particular, Hezbollah has since significantly increased their weapons capabilities, amassing approx. 120,000–200,000 munitions (short-range guided ballistic missiles, short- and intermediate-range unguided ballistic missiles, and short- and long-range unguided rockets), and has increased the deployment of its armed forces south of the Litani River, developing tunnels, weapon stashes, airstrips and military installations.[2][3][4][5] Lebanon has also accused Israel of not fully withdrawing from Lebanese territories (northern part of Ghajar village, the Shebaa Farms, and the Kfarchouba hills), and of violating their air and maritime borders.[6]”
Later in 2024, after Israel’s pager and radio attacks had crippled Hizbollah, additional Israeli military action finally compelled Hizbollah to withdraw north of the Litani, thus fulfilling that part of Res’ 1701. Only after that expulsion could the civilians in the north of Israel return safely to their homes.
@53: “I suggest a better attitude.”
The continued extreme bitterness our hard-leftie friends here at the Stranger, headline posters and supportive commenters alike, voluminously spit at actual peace really tells us a lot about them, doesn’t it? They’ve believed all along this conflict would end badly for Israel. Now it’s ending favorably for Israel, and so they’ve done all but admit openly that they’d rather have the war back.
They couldn’t even express the most token of verbal support for peace until we called them out for not doing so, and now we’re dragging them, kicking screaming biting scratching every last inch of the way, toward the most gracelessly ungrateful and begrudging acceptance of peace possible. (Well, at least they’re no longer applauding vandalism of buildings at the UW, or supporting the harassment of American college students for Jewishness, real or perceived.)
@54: just to add a little editorial: this is a good plan! 😄 If you, like me, love the Palestinian people and want Palestinians to exercise sovereignty and self-governance, then this is the plan for you! 😘 If you want to see the Palestinians live in peace, free from terror and occupation, then this is the plan for you! 😄
The only reason not to support this plan is if you hate Israel and were hoping to see Israel defeated, destroyed, or otherwise humbled as a result of the war in Gaza. The plan does not contain any provisions for that. 😂 Better luck next war! 🤣🤣🤣
@56: Exactly! In their ongoing sore-loser bitterness, our hard-leftie friends have overlooked the reason Hamas attacked on 10/7: to scuttle Saudi Arabia’s official recognition of Israel. That recognition requires Israel to reciprocate by committing to a two-state solution. So that path to the two-state solution can now resume.
Of course, that might require (among other things) our friends to recognize that chanting, “From the River to the Sea,” and openly applauding those very same 10/7 attacks, might not be the best way to encourage work toward a two-state solution.
@57 Netanyahu will never accept a two-state solution. Heck, he (and other parts of the Israeli right wing) propped up Hamas for years explicitly to prevent a two-state solution. That worked well, didn’t it!
@58: Doesn’t matter what Netanyahu wants. He is old and facing an unfavorable election. 🤣 Even if he wins, he’ll presumably know better this time than to trust Hamas’s commitment to peaceful governance! 🤣
The anti-Israel left’s weird personal fixation on Netanyahu has never made sense. The biggest impediment to Palestinian statehood is not the personal preferences of one Israeli man, it’s the Palestinians’ widespread, decades-long commitment to wiping Israel off the map by force of arms. 😂 That worked well didn’t it! 🤣
@58, 63% of Israeli’s currently OPPOSE a two state solution. 65% opposed a two-state solution in 2023, prior to the 10/7 attack. There hasn’t been majority Israeli support for a two state solution since 2012, when there was 63% support.

It is not the right wing in Israel that stands in the way of a two state solution but a broad swath of both Israeli and Palestinian societies.
It seems the U.S. and Europe wish to imperially impose a “solution” on these societies that neither wants. So much for your ostensible support of indigenous self-determination.

You gotta a problem with that?
@64: “bobo PROPPED UP HAMAS for fucking Decades to Split Palestine into Two”
When Hamas was a charitable movement, Israel supported them just as Israel supports countless other charities, foreign and domestic, throughout the occupied territories. 😃 When Hamas was the duly elected government of Gaza, Israel supported them just as Israel supports every other duly elected Palestinian government. 😁 Only when Hamas revealed that they were more committed to jihad than to charity or governance did Israel decisively turn against Hamas. 😛
In retrospect, Kristofarian is probably correct: Israel should have destroyed Hamas back when Hamas appeared to be merely a charity or a government. Excessive leniency in the face of Palestine violence has been a consistent policy failure of Israel for decades, although it has taken Israel a long time to wake up to it. I’m encouraged that even an “antizionist” like Kristofarian is finally starting to see it. 😂
@63, @65, @66: Our hard-leftie friends here have become so incredibly upset at the mere prospect of peace in Palestine, they keep forgetting they are supposed to hide their pro-Hamas sentiments. The current peace deal works for Israel, it works for the Palestinians; the only entity it does not work for is Hamas, which is why our friends hate it so much.
This great article in the WSJ describes how we got to this peace deal: by isolating Hamas, leaving Hamas with no other option:
“When Hamas leader Khalil Al-Hayya first saw President Trump’s plan for peace in Gaza, which demanded his group disarm with few concrete steps to make sure Israel would end the war, his immediate reaction was no.”
[…]
“But two days later, Hamas came back to Arab mediators with a yes. The deal hadn’t changed. The pressure on Hamas had.”
[…]
“Once Trump got Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to publicly agree to end the war, Hamas was cornered as the lone holdout.”
Much much more, deliciously: (https://www.wsj.com/world/middle-east/a-coordinated-squeeze-play-forced-hamas-to-accept-a-deal-it-didnt-want-7753f9c8?mod=world_lead_pos1)
Also — and more deliciously, in a literal manner — hundreds of trucks, laden with thousands of tons of food and other humanitarian assistance, have entered Gaza:
“The Egyptian Red Crescent said it dispatched 400 trucks loaded with more than 9,000 tons of humanitarian aid slated to cross into Gaza on Sunday. The aid includes food baskets, flour, fuel, medicine and supplies such as tents, blankets and mobile bathrooms.
“A total of 600 trucks entered the enclave, in line with Israel’s commitments under the cease-fire deal, an Israeli official said.”

That’s a helpful acknowledgment krisofarain, but don’t dwell on after the “but” – as that fodder is the source of your provocation and your passion. What you’re actually afraid of is what happens to you psychologically if the peace deal holds. You should prepare yourself for a rhetorical letdown.
For our friends who complain that Israel and the US imposed a peace deal on Hamas, the first URL @67 goes into detail about how other countries took a very hard line with Hamas:
“A Coordinated Squeeze Forced Hamas to Accept a Deal It Didn’t Want
“Under pressure from its overseas hosts and increasingly reviled at home, the militant group had little choice but to relent”
First came the news Hamas’ prime terror tactic had not merely failed on it’s own terms, but had provided Israel with an excuse to avoid signing onto the peace deal:
“Egypt and Qatar told Hayya the deal was his last chance to end the war, according to the officials. They pressed Hamas to understand that holding the hostages was becoming a strategic liability, giving Israel a source of legitimacy to keep fighting.”
Then they bluntly told Hamas the consequences of not signing:
“The next day, joined by Turkey, they warned him that if Hamas didn’t approve the plan it would be stripped of all political and diplomatic cover; Qatar and Turkey would no longer host the group’s political leadership, and Egypt would stop pressing for Hamas to have a say in Gaza’s postwar governance, the officials said.”
[…]
‘Critics have long wanted Arab mediators to do more to pressure Hamas into ending the war. But this time, conditions were ripe.
‘“I think everybody just wanted to be done with this,” said Michael Ratney, a former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia and top diplomat in Israel.’
But wait, there was more! Hamas faced pressure inside Gaza as well:
“Hamas also was under growing pressure at home—short on funds, barely able to keep up a guerrilla war against Israeli forces that have seized much of Gaza, and facing a Palestinian public that has suffered hunger and ruin and just wanted the war to be over.”
Faced with the complete loss of all external support, and an internal population which just wanted an end, Hamas signed.
(We should note a similar combination of internal and external pressure worked simultaneously on Israel, with Israelis just wanting the war over and their hostages home, and the US and other partners also pressing for Israel to apologize for the attack on Qatar, and sign for peace with Hamas.)
Oh no they got Mr. FAFO! He was just on his way to cure someone’s cancer as part of his journalism duties! Why, Doghmush, whyyyy? 😂😂😂

ST. HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (AP) — A mass shooting early Sunday at a crowded bar on an idyllic island considered to be the largest Gullah community on the South Carolina coast has left four people dead and at least 20 injured, officials said.
A large crowd was at Willie’s Bar and Grill on St. Helena Island when sheriff’s deputies arrived and found many people with gunshot wounds. An estimated 5,000 or more Gullah people living on the island trace their ancestry back to enslaved West Africans who once worked rice plantations in the area before being freed by the Civil War.

White Seattle “progressives” are so naive lol
@59: “The anti-Israel left’s weird personal fixation on Netanyahu has never made sense. The biggest impediment to Palestinian statehood is not the personal preferences of one Israeli man, it’s the Palestinians’ widespread, decades-long commitment to wiping Israel off the map by force of arms.”
It makes perfect sense, and for the reason you gave. The “From the River to the Sea” crowd already needed a simplistic answer to a complex problem, and if that simplistic answer helps them to evade responsibility for the correct answer, then they’ll take it every time.
Think Slog AM will finally mention this tomorrow? Nah, they will ignore it. It doesn’t fit their naive White Guilt “progressive narrative”:
A third victim and city council rep public safety plan as 18-year-old victim in deadly Broadway and Pike shooting identified
“The 18-year-old shot in the chest and killed in this week’s deadly shooting at Broadway and Pike has been identified and a third victim hit in Thursday night’s chaos of gunfire has been reported after a male suffering from a grazing gunshot wound arrived at Harborview Saturday night.
Police are investigating the bloodshed including possible connections to the homicide last month a few blocks away at 10th and Pike that left a 26-year-old shot to death inside the vehicle he was driving.
Meanwhile, the neighborhood’s representative on the Seattle City Council says officials “owe our neighborhood more than statements or open letters” and has released a five-point plan for “meaningful public safety investments in Capitol Hill and First Hill.”
The King County Medical examiner says 18-year-old Jaydon Jameson [FULL NAME: JAYDON WENDEL NATHANIE [sic] JAMESON] died of multiple gunshot wounds in the Thursday night slaying.
CHS reported here on the chaotic just after 8 PM assault at the troubled corner of Broadway and Pike that has been a center of focus for the Seattle Police Department and neighborhood public safety concerns. The shooting left Jameson dead and sent another person hit in the crossfire to the hospital Thursday night. An apparent third victim was reported by the hospital Saturday night.”

So, looking at the banner ad still atop this site, how did the Seattle rally for Sawant’s “…anti-genocide, pro-worker campaign for Congress to DEFEAT warmongering Democrat Adam Smith” go, what with no longer any “genocide” or “war” to monger?
@78 the lack of coverage probably says more than her bloviating.
Of more interest is all three progressive candidates for Seattle; Wilson, Rinck and Foster blew off the debate at the Washington athletic club. I guess they think they are cruising to victory and have nothing more to be gained from additional public scrutiny.
@78: “no longer any “genocide” or “war” to monger”
The genocide is not over! The genocide is never over! Israel is genocide! Other nations have the right to self-determination and sovereignty, but the Jewish nation does not! If you believe Jews should have the same rights as other people, then you are a genocide! 🤣🤣🤣

@81: lol that’s Point 13 of the 20-point peace plan: No more weapons, no more tunnels. 😃 What, you want a peace plan where Hamas keeps the weapons and tunnels? This is why they call you a Hamasnik! 😂
Point 16 says the international stabilization force can perform the demilitarization work, but if the international force doesn’t do it, then Israel can do it for them. Point 17 says Hamas doesn’t get to say no to any of this. 😁 What, you thought Hamas would disarm out of the goodness of their hearts? 🤣

Donald Trump, Keir Starmer, Emmanuel Macron, Pedro Sánchez and others are meeting “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to achieve peace and stability in the Middle East, and usher in a new era of regional security and stability.”

The secure future of those in Gaza,

Without

there can be no faith or trust in Israel or

The killings have mercifully stopped for now in Gaza,

The Stranger, and supportive commenters, continue to grumble over this so-called peace deal. Meanwhile, from the WSJ:
“The United Nations said it is scaling up humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza, bringing cooking gas to the enclave for the first time since March when it was banned by Israeli authorities. The U.N. said it also brought in tents for displaced families, frozen meat, fresh fruit, flour and medicine throughout the day Sunday.”
The article goes on to say the UN will deliver 190,000 metric tonnes of aid in coming days.
@82: Huh. It’s like our friends who keep criticizing the peace plan haven’t even read it, whilst those of us who support it have not only read it, but can cite it in detail. What could possibly explain this strange dichotomy? (I mean, our friends know absolutely everything about this peace deal — especially how it simply must fail! — just ask them.)

Israeli Soldiers Torched Food, Homes,
and a Critical Sewage Treatment Plant
in the Wake of Ceasefire Announcement
Soldiers called the mass arson of Gaza City their “final touches.”
The destruction of Palestinian structures following
the departure of soldiers who had used them
as temporary bases has been a hallmark of
Israel’s approach to Gaza for two years.
In July, Israeli reporter Yuval Abraham collected testimonies from soldiers describing a myriad of arson methods. “Every Arab house we entered had olive oil […] We poured the oil on the sofas, on anything flammable in the apartment, and then we ignited [it] or threw in a smoke grenade.
This was a common practice,” one of them described. The agreement came after months of a concerted effort to render Gaza uninhabitable by destroying residences and civilian infrastructure, culminating in the ground invasion of Gaza City and the leveling of several high rises in Gaza City.
In September, Israeli government minister
Gila Gamliel told Channel 7 News, “We have already
completely annihilated 75% of the entire [Gaza] Strip.
There remains 25%, which, as you know, it too…
we are now taking over [the city of] Gaza—
there will be nothing left there that would
really [have] the potential to be habitable.”
The Israeli military did not provide comment by press time.
[allow me:
But Hamas!]
The images posted to social media stand
in stark contrast to the message put
out on Truth Social by Trump:
“Israel will withdraw their Troops to
an agreed upon line as the first steps to-
ward a Strong, Durable, and Everlasting Peace.
All Parties will be treated fairly!”
The burning of buildings taken over and used
as command centers upon departure has
been a consistent Israeli policy in Gaza,
Lebanon, and the West Bank. The
scope of the carnage on Thursday
night, however, went beyond any
previously recorded individual
arson spree.
Among the structures Drop Site discovered
had been set on fire by the departing soldiers
was the Sheikh Ajlin Sewage Treatment Station,
a central component of Gaza City’s sanitation network.
Monther Shoblaq, Director General
of the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility
(CMWU) in Gaza, said the attack is a blow that
could push Gaza City’s wastewater system “to point zero.”
He added the plant is “one of Gaza’s oldest”
and warned that its destruction will set back
planned reconstruction efforts by years.
“I mean, they signed a ceasefire,”
Shoblaq said. “Why
set it on fire?”

DID QATARI MONEY DRIVE TRUMP’S PUSH FOR GAZA CEASEFIRE?
Trump’s stance on Gaza shifted after Israel’s attack on Qatar —
a close ally where he and his family have key business deals
THE NOTION THAT President Donald Trump’s recent push toward a ceasefire in Gaza may have been motivated, in large part, by his failed campaign to win a Nobel Peace Prize is well-documented. Less discussed is Trump’s close relationship with Qatar — a Gulf state ally where he, his family, friends, and the U.S. have increasingly significant ties.
In February, as Palestinians in Gaza had just begun to return to their homes amid a U.S.-brokered ceasefire, Trump called for the removal of all Palestinians from Gaza so that he could redevelop it into a “Middle East Riviera.”
After Israel breached the Trump ceasefire in March, Trump put little overt pressure on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to end his war as the death toll mounted.
Trump didn’t object when Israel attacked Syria, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran.
That
changed
suddenly after
Israeli fighter jets
launched 10 missiles at
a residential building in the
Qatari capital of Doha in early September.
Israel’s Peace Plan: Assassinate the Ceasefire Negotiators
The building in Doha housed Hamas political leaders and their families who at the time were engaged in peace talks with the Qataris serving as mediators. While the Hamas officials survived the attack, the strike killed six people, including a Qatari security official, and injured several others, including civilians.
Trump immediately took to Truth Social to say he was “unhappy” with the Israeli operation and denounced the strike on Qatar, which he called a “close Ally of the United States, that is working very hard and bravely taking risks with us to broker Peace.” Suddenly, Trump was facing pressure from his allies in the Middle East.
A U.S. ceasefire proposal followed several weeks later, with Trump strong-arming Netanyahu to accept. “He’s got to be fine with it. He has no choice. With me, you got to be fine,” Trump told Axios.
Prior to the press conference announcing his plan, Trump cornered Netanyahu in the Oval Office and pressed him to apologize over the phone to Qatar’s Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani for the September 9 airstrike.
A Qatari official reportedly helped write Netanyahu’s apology, along with the White House, and remained in the Oval Office to ensure the Israeli leader stayed on script, according to Politico.
Trump went on to start the press conference
by praising the Qatari leader as a
“fantastic person” who
“wants peace.”

Israeli Media’s Distorted View of the War in Gaza
While global news showed a humanitarian disaster, most outlets in Israel remained silent. In December 2023, nearly three months after the October 7 massacre, the Israeli Institute for National Security Studies gathered members of the country’s media.
Run out of Tel Aviv University, in a modern building on the campus surrounded by well-kept lawns and native trees, the INSS had a controversial task for the congregated press: Assess how the media was responding to Israel’s war on Gaza.
For months on TV,
nationalism, grief, and revenge
had mixed freely. Israeli victims’ testimonies
were common, as were first responders’ accounts.

genociders on derr Schlogg]
The idea of a second Holocaust,
requiring a massive military response,
was regular talking point. But the suffering
in Gaza was hardly noted. By mid-December,
close to 20,000 people in Gaza had been killed.
The group summoned by the INSS—keeping anonymous for fear of backlash—hoped to examine their own media’s self-imposed iron curtain on the disaster unfolding on the other side of the border.
Across local media, Israeli troop movements are
detailed, and impassioned analysis continues. But
the mainstream press has steered far clear of questioning
the high civilian death tolls and level of destruction in Gaza.
Palestinian voices have been silenced,
the report noted, and the Israelis who called
for an end to the war were often canceled. On hard-
right Israeli news, like Channel 14, when an image is shown
of a dead Gazan, it is not to show the costs of the campaign.
Instead, it is
almost always to
celebrate the effectiveness
of the Israel Defense Forces or to
illustrate the supposed ease of Hamas’ pro-
paganda campaign in fooling a gullible Western press.
There have been “only a bare scattering of reports on the huge scale of the humanitarian crisis” on television, Anat Saragusti of the Union of Journalists in Israel, a labor organization, wrote in the liberal daily newspaper Haaretz. And there are only a “handful of reports on primetime mainstream media telling the story of Palestinian civilians.”
The Israeli public
has been left to form
its opinions based on social media,
independent outlets, and what it can cobble
together from mainstream news items that hew to the IDF line.
In a political atmosphere largely dominated by
an explosive mix of grief and nationalism,
foreign news reports on atrocities are
regularly dismissed as “blood libel”
driven by antisemitism.
[now There’s a
Familiar tune]
A poll conducted in May found
that 64 percent of Israelis don’t want
additional information on what happens in Gaza.
The media, created
by and for the people, is
both complicit in constructing,
and blinded by, this national ethos.

@97: “perhaps that’s because the IOF has targeted/Assassinated 150+ Journalists in Gaza”
Right, right, “Journalists” like the beloved Mr. FAFO, a rifle-toting, uniform-wearing Hamas fighter who made it all the way to the ceasefire before getting schwacked by the Doghmush militia yesterday! 😂 Every muqawim with an iphone is a “journalist” ha ha ha! And in Mr. FAFO’s case he was also a doctor, a relief worker, a schoolteacher, etc etc, a pretty busy schedule on top of his duties for Hamas 🤣🤣🤣
@98 – What’s wrong with being “racist”? Are you some kind of goofy Creationist who denies Evolution and believes that “God created everyone Equal”?
