Who Needs Federal Workers? Not the Trump administration, apparently. Once again, the government is looking at a possible shutdown if Congress can’t push a budget through by September 30. This time, it’s healthcare on the line. Democrats are refusing to vote for a Republican stopgap that doesn’t continue Obamacare subsidies that would end in December. They’re also demanding that the budget reverse cuts to Medicaid and other health programs that Republicans made over the summer. Trump clearly felt like there wasn’t enough tension in the room, so his Office of Management and Budget told federal agencies late on Wednesday night to use the looming shutdown “to consider Reduction in Force” notices to lay off more federal employees. He also told agencies to eliminate positions that had been deemed “not consistent” with President Trump’s political agenda. Which is, for the most part, anyone that keeps the government running.
But He Also Kind of Does: The AP reported yesterday that hundreds of DOGE’d federal employees are being asked to return to work. Employees have until the end of the week to decide if they want to climb back down to hell.
Violent Left-Wing Extremist Until Proven Otherwise: The Trump administration wants to own the narrative of the shooting at a Dallas ICE facility that, to be absolutely clear, did not shoot ICE agents. He shot three detainees, killing one and injuring the other two. But Trump & friends are not letting their lack of information get in the way. VP JD Vance called the shooter a “violent left-wing extremist,” with no information to indicate that that’s true, which devolved into a Twitter slap fight with Pod Saves America’s Jon Favreau. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that “our ICE law enforcement is facing unprecedented violence against them,” about a shooting that didn’t injure any ICE law enforcement.
The President Directs the DOJ Now: The Trump administration has warped all of our sense of reality, so let’s start with a reminder. For decades, the Justice Department has been intentionally insulated from the executive branch to avoid politicizing our justice system. On Friday morning, Trump went onto Fox & Friends and told his Fox Friends that George Soros, a billionaire who, through a grant network called the Open Society Foundation, funds Democratic candidates and left-leaning causes, should be “put in jail.” This week, the president appears to have directed the DOJ to investigate Soros, and the department directed a team to explore possible criminal cases. The New York Times reported that “possible charges included racketeering, arson, wire fraud and material support for terrorism, according to a copy of the directive,” but all of their intel appears to be from a report from a far-right group called Capital Research Center.
Starbucks Is on the Rocks: Our hometown burnt coffee purveyor is laying off about 900 non-retail workers and closing more than 100 of their stores (many of which are unionized). One of those stores is the Capitol Hill Reserve Roastery, one of its busiest stores and to my knowledge, the only place in the world that serves a pumpkin spice flight.

ICE Releases One Fire Fighter: After arresting Rigoberto Hernandez Hernandez while he was helping to fight the Bear Gulch Fire, and holding him in detention for almost a month, immigration authorities unceremoniously released him without an order from a judge. It’s rare that immigration’s unpredictable nature works in an immigrant’s favor.
Build That Wall: Earlier this month, the Seattle Times reported that Christian Sinderman, one of Seattle’s most sought-after political consultants and Mayor Bruce Harrell’s top political strategist, has had unusual access to City Hall during Harrell’s term as mayor. Harrell insisted that he’d ended Sinderman’s contract at the beginning of 2025 to “put up a big wall” and avoid any blurred lines between his reelection campaign and the happenings in City Hall. “Turns out that wall was not so tall,” the Seattle Times reported. Sinderman continued to use his city-issued key card to get into City Hall, including to Harrell’s office, 33 separate times this year. And in August, he was awarded a new contract working with the city’s Department of Transportation. Time to install an electric fence.
Single Malt Caper: This summer, a freight truck pulled up to the Westland Distillery warehouse in Skagit County. The driver showed warehouse workers a document saying that he was there to pick up 12,000 bottles of whiskey. He was, but he wasn’t supposed to be. They were never seen again. According to the Seattle Times’s Tan Vinh, among the haul were $150 bottles of their award-winning 10th anniversary Garryana whiskey, which the distillery said is irreplaceable. In total, the stolen bottles are worth almost $1 million. Or one really hazy long weekend.

And for Our PNW Version: The Woodland park zoo has a new wolf pack. They’re brothers, they’re six-years-old, and there are four of them. They’re awesome. According to the zoo, the wolves are a subspecies of gray wolf, known as the Mexican gray wolf. They’re obviously not from here, but they’re related to native wolves! And they’re critically endangered. These (not so) little dudes are part of a recovery initiative called SAFE (Saving Animals From Extinction).
The Democrats shouldn’t cave again on the CR, time to have this fight and get it over with!

My sister works for a federal agency that had many employees taking the buy out and they were recently told they need to re-staff by several hundred employees. We’ve already been paying out salaries for voluntary layoffs, and will now be absorbing the financial cost and delays associated with hiring and training new workers after the loss of so much institutional knowledge.
Instead of saving money like we were promised, we wasted a shit ton of it for nothing and made government less efficient, all to justify tax cuts for people like trump and elon. Here’s a “narrative” for you: Just this past Monday (September 22), six of the people who attacked the ICE facility in Alvarado Texas on July 4, 2025, (which resulted in an Alvarado police officer getting shot in the neck) were arraigned. Just this past Wednesday, two of the other people involved in the attack were arraigned. The attack on the Dallas ICE facility happened the very next day. If you don’t think all those incidents are connected, you are a naive fool.
Correction to #10 – the two men who were arraigned for the attack on the Alvarado ICE facility were arraigned on Tuesday, and the attack on the Dallas ICE facility happened Wednesday. For some reason I thought today was Friday haha. My point still stands though.

DALLAS (AP) — The gunman who opened fire on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas hated the U.S. government and wanted to incite terror by killing federal agents, officials said Thursday.
The details about the shooter’s motive emerged at a news conference a day after the attack, which killed an ICE detainee and critically wounded two others. The gunman fatally shot himself.

DALLAS (AP) — The gunman who opened fire on an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dallas, killing a detainee and critically wounding two others, left behind a note saying that he hoped the attack would “give ICE agents real terror,” the FBI director said Thursday.
The post by Kash Patel on the social platform X offered the first hint of a motive behind the shooting on Wednesday that targeted the ICE building, including a van in a gated entryway. The detainees were in the van. No ICE personnel were wounded.
The assailant, who authorities said fired indiscriminately from a nearby rooftop, was involved in a “high degree of pre-attack planning,” Patel said, and agents have seized electronic devices, handwritten notes and other evidence from a Dallas-area home.
“One of the handwritten notes recovered read, ‘Hopefully this will give ICE agents real terror, to think, is there a sniper with AP rounds on that roof?’” Patel wrote, quoting an apparent abbreviation for armor-piercing bullets.
The gunman had also downloaded a document titled “Dallas County Office of Homeland Security & Emergency Management” containing a list of Homeland Security facilities, Patel said.
Hours before the shooting, the assailant conducted multiple internet searches for ballistics information and video of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk on a Utah university campus this month, Patel said. Last month, the man searched for apps that tracked the presence of ICE agents, he added.
Joshua Jahn, 29, was identified as the shooter by a law enforcement official who could not publicly disclose details of the investigation and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
On Wednesday, Patel posted a photo on social media showing a bullet found at the scene with “ANTI-ICE” written on it. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem ordered more security at ICE facilities across the U.S., according to a post by the DHS on X.
The attack was the latest high-profile targeted killing in the U.S. It happened two weeks after Kirk was killed by a shooter on the roof of a building at Utah Valley University and as heightened immigration enforcement has prompted a backlash against ICE agents and fear in immigrant communities.
The American Immigration Lawyers Association called the shootings “a stark reminder that behind every immigration case number is a human being deserving of dignity, safety and respect.”
“Whether they are individuals navigating the immigration process, public servants carrying out their duties, or professionals working within the system, all deserve to be free from violence and fear,” the group said in a statement.
FBI says attack was ‘act of targeted violence’
Authorities have given few details about the shooting and did not publicly release the names of the victims. The FBI said it was investigating the shooting as “an act of targeted violence.”
The gunman used a bolt-action rifle, according to a law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.
Edwin Cardona, an immigrant from Venezuela, said he was entering the ICE building with his son for an appointment around 6:20 a.m. when he heard gunshots. An agent took people who were inside to a more secure area and said there was an active shooter.
“I was afraid for my family, because my family was outside. I felt terrible, because I thought something could happen to them,” Cardona said, adding that they were later reunited.
The ICE facility is along Interstate 35 East, just southwest of Dallas Love Field, a large airport serving the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area, and blocks from hotels.
Who was the gunman?
Hours after the shooting, FBI agents gathered at a home in suburban Fairview, outside Dallas, that public records link to Jahn.
The house sits on a tree-lined cul-de-sac in a neighborhood dotted with one- and two-story brick homes. The street was blocked by a police vehicle, and officials wearing FBI jackets could be seen in the front yard.
A spokesperson for Collin College in nearby McKinney, said via email that a Joshua Jahn studied there “at various times” between 2013 and 2018.
In late 2017, Jahn drove cross-country to work a minimum-wage job harvesting marijuana for several months, said Ryan Sanderson, owner of a legal cannabis farm in Washington state.
“He’s a young kid, a thousand miles from home, didn’t really seem to have any direction, living out of his car at such a young age,” Sanderson told the AP.
Calls for an end to political violence
Shortly after the shooting and before officials said at least one victim was a detainee, Vice President JD Vance posted on X that “the obsessive attack on law enforcement, particularly ICE, must stop.”
Republican Sen. Ted Cruz, who represents Texas, continued in that direction, calling for an end to political violence.
The Catholic Legal Immigration Network, an advocacy group, said the shootings are “a heartbreaking reminder of the violence and fear that too often touch the lives of migrants and the communities where they live.”
Noem says ICE agents have been targeted
Noem noted a recent uptick in targeting of ICE agents.
On July 4, attackers in black, military-style clothing opened fire outside the Prairieland Detention Center in Alvarado, southwest of Dallas, federal prosecutors said. One police officer was wounded. At least 11 people have been charged in connection with the attack.
Days later, a man with an assault rifle fired dozens of rounds at federal agents leaving a Border Patrol facility in McAllen. The man, identified as Ryan Louis Mosqueda, injured a responding police officer before authorities shot and killed him.
In suburban Chicago, federal authorities erected a fence around an immigration processing center after tensions flared with protesters. President Donald Trump’s administration has stepped up immigration enforcement in the Chicago area, resulting in hundreds of arrests.
Dozens of immigration field offices across the country house administrative employees and are used for people summoned for check-in appointments and to process people arrested before they are transferred to long-term detention centers. They are not designed to hold people in custody.
Security varies by location, with some in federal buildings and others mixed with private businesses, said John Torres, a former acting director of the agency and former head of what is now called its enforcement and removals division.

Man dies as police shootout follows firebomb attack on immigration centre
A 69-year-old man armed with a rifle threw incendiary devices at an immigration jail in Washington state early on Saturday morning, then was found dead after four police officers arrived and opened fire, authorities said.
A friend of the dead man said she thought he wanted to provoke a fatal conflict, the Seattle Times reported, and described him as an anarchist and anti-fascist.
The Tacoma police department said the officers responded about 4am to the privately run Tacoma Northwest Detention Centre, a Department of Homeland Security detention facility that holds migrants pending deportation proceedings.
The detention centre has also held immigration-seeking parents separated from their children under Donald Trump’s “zero tolerance” policy, an effort meant to deter illegal immigration.
The shooting took place about six hours after a peaceful rally in front of the detention centre, police spokesman Loretta Cool said.
The Pierce county medical examiner’s office identified the man as Willem Van Spronsen of Vashon Island, the Tacoma News-Tribune and the Seattle Times reported.
Police said Van Spronsen caused a vehicle to catch fire and attempted to ignite a large propane tank and set buildings alight. Police said that besides the rifle, he had a satchel and flares.
Police said officers called out to Van Spronsen and shots were fired.
Officers then located Van Spronsen and determined he had been shot and was dead. Authorities said investigators were processing the scene and police are continuing to investigate. No law enforcement officers were injured.
A motive for Van Spronsen’s actions had not been determined, Cool said.
A friend of Van Spronsen, Deb Bartley, told the Seattle Times she had been a friend for about 20 years. She described Van Spronsen as an anarchist and anti-fascist and said she believed his attack on the detention center was meant to provoke a fatal conflict.
“He was ready to end it,” Bartley said. “I think this was a suicide. But then he was able to kind of do it in a way that spoke to his political beliefs. I know he went down there knowing he was going to die.”
She said she and other friends of Van Spronsen got letters in the mail “just saying goodbye”. He also wrote what she referred to as a manifesto, which she declined to discuss in detail.
Van Spronsen was accused of assaulting a police officer during a protest outside the detention centre, the News-Tribune reported. According to court documents he lunged at the officer who was trying to detain a 17-year-old protester on 26 June 2018.
Van Spronsen pleaded guilty to the charge of obstructing police and was given a deferred sentence in October, the News-Tribune reported.
GEO Group, which runs the 1,575-bed Northwest Detention Centre, in an email to the Associated Press said baseless accusations about how detainees were treated at its facilities “have led to misplaced aggression and a dangerous environment for our employees, whose safety is our top priority.
“Violence of any kind against our employees and property will not be tolerated. We are thankful for the quick and brave action by the Tacoma police department, which prevented innocent lives from being endangered.”

Incident

Perpetrator
Willem van Spronsen (1950–2019) was a carpenter and a resident of Vashon, Washington,[6][1] who had been arrested previously during a demonstration at the same ICE detention center in June 2018.[1][7] In the earlier incident, he had a physical altercation with a police officer during an effort to free a protester who was detained. Police alleged that van Spronsen was armed with a baton and a folding knife.[1] According to police, van Spronsen was an anarchist who claimed to be associated with a designation known as antifa, a broad category of antifascist action frequently mistaken for an organized group.[8] In a letter written before the attack, he wrote “I am antifa.”[9] Van Spronsen’s daughter, who describes herself as an advocate of liberal pacifism, said her father was a supporter of anarchism but had written that she disagreed with him “on some principles, such as the use of force and weapons in the fight”.[10]
Van Spronsen had been active in social media under the pseudonym “Emma Durutti”, a portmanteau of the names of historic anarchists Emma Goldman and Buenaventura Durruti. Van Spronsen had once been a member of the Puget Sound John Brown Gun Club and had attended Occupy Wall Street protests in 2011.[6] Van Spronsen had formerly been involved with Alcoholics Anonymous.[10] Van Spronsen had written a manifesto detailing his political justification for attacking the ICE facility.[8][11][12] In this document, van Spronsen said that “it’s time to take action against the forces of evil”, citing “highly profitable detention/concentration camps and a battle over the semantics”.[13]

Without these facilities the Mexican gray wolf would probably go extinct in the wild. It would be great if we didn’t need zoos or aquariums but unfortunately as long as people are involved there will be a need for these facilities to help promote conservation and recovery of endangered, sick and injured animals. Not all facilities are equal though so if you want to make sure you are supporting the right efforts look for ones that are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) or The Alliance of Marine Mammal Parks and Aquariums (AMMPA). The institutions that are members of these organizations are committed to ensuring the protection and continuity of these animals and do far more good than harm.
