Idol Ko Si, "See You in the Reading Room" (self-released)

Idol Ko Si—Climax Golden Twins' Robert Millis, Min Yee (A Frames, Universe People, Dreamsalon, too many others), and Matthew Ford (Factums, Dreamsalon, the Intelligence, too many others)—had a busy 2018, recording four albums. (I reviewed the first one here.) As last year was whimpering to a close, the Seattle supergroup digitally issued three full-lengths on their Bandcamp. I recommend you spend quality time with all of them.

Those who've followed the panoply of fantastic groups with which these musicians have played over the decades will encounter familiar pleasures throughout: immaculately filthy fidelity; strange atmospheres; acutely wielded distortion and noise; subversive rock moves; and the occasional crazy rhythm (see especially "Black Willage" on Idol Ko Si 4). In some subterranean, avant-grimy cosmos, Idol Ko Si are stars.

"See You in the Reading Room" off Idol Ko Si 2 reminds me of Chrome crusading through the Fall's "Wrong Place, Right Time" or Gang of Four's "Not Great Men"; it's a pumping, atonal funk jam that will haunt and char any discotheque in which it'll get aired (0 percent chance of that, because we live in a fallen world). Anyway, "See You in the Reading Room" is but one of dozens of freshly minted improvised gems from the far-from-idle minds of Idol Ko Si. Get thee to their Bandcamp and wallow in the maleficent mire.
