The 99 tunnel is open for business: Did you run through the new tunnel and say goodbye to the viaduct for good this weekend? Or did you sleep in like me? That’s what I thought. Today is the first day the tunnel is open for traffic going both directions, and it should alleviate much of the extra congestion we saw during the Seattle Squeeze. But just because Viadoom is over doesn’t mean you should stop taking the bus or bike commuting to work!

It snowed! Look outside and feast your eyes. Go ahead, make a snowball and throw it at a squirrel. Go sledding with a baking sheet. Make a Seattle snowman covered head to toe in Patagonia and Arcteryx with a profound love of craft beer. Seattle and the surroundings counties saw anywhere from 1 to 4 inches of snow over the last 24 hours, and cold nighttime temperatures made it stick. Public schools are closed across the city, and commuting times are expected to be much higher despite the shiny new tunnel.

The State of the Union is a dumpster fire: President Donald Trump will give the State of the Union speech tomorrow night, and I already know I’m not going to watch. If I wanted to watch an old man pontificate for more than an hour, I’d go see Clint Eastwood’s new movie, The Mule. Conventional wisdom would lead a president to focus on the strong economy and try to move toward the center to unite the country going into the 2020 campaign, but Trump is anything but conventional.

Virginia governor faces calls for resignation: Governor Ralph Northam is facing mounting pressure to resign after a racist picture surfaced of him and a friend dressed in blackface and a full KKK hood and robes. Northam then admitted at a press conference that he had also worn blackface for a dance contest in 1984 to imitate Michael Jackson. Fuck, man, how hard is it to just not paint yourself in blackface? The governor hasn’t made up his mind yet about resigning, but the pressure is on.

We have more wolves than we thought: Loyal Slog fans may remember that in college I worked at a lab where I handled animal poop all day to learn more about the animals. The study is finally out! I had very little to do with it, but the main results of the Northeast Wolf Assessment is that Washington’s population of wolves is larger than we thought. They found 95 wolves in just two counties (Stevens and Pend Oreille) leading researcher Sam Wasser to estimate the state’s wolf population is close to 200.

El Chapo trial reaches final stages: After more than 200 hours of testimony, the jury in the case against Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzmán Loera for a mind-boggling number of crimes is going into deliberations. They’ll now decide his fate based on witness testimony and even tapes of him directing drug supply lines. The tapes look pretty bad for him, but Trump still got to be president after those Access Hollywood tapes leaked, so who knows how this will shake out..

21 Savage is in ICE custody: The Atlanta-based rapper who has rapped for years about his hometown Atlanta pride is actually from the UK, according to ICE. They claim he arrived in the United States legally in 2005 and then overstayed his year-long visa. I really hope he doesn’t get deported, but I would also love to hear him collaborate with some of UK hiphop’s up and comers.

The Super Bowl is five hours of my life I'll never get back: If you don't usually watch football and got dragged to a Super Bowl party, I swear football isn't usually that boring. And don't even get me started on the halftime show!
