Though it seems as if we were just ankle-deep in snow, Capitol Hill Block Party is revving up for the summer. The 23rd CHBP will take place this year from July 19-21 in the Pike Pine corridor; headliners include producer RL Grime, electro-pop duo Phantogram, and singer-rapper-flautist-twerk icon Lizzo. Also making an appearance: Portland's favorite rapper Aminé, British electronic music duo Snakehips, badass crooner Mitski, Native producer and DJ crew from Toronto A Tribe Called Red, funky electro dance pop duo from Tacoma Mirrorgloss, Seattle art punk band Tres Leches, and many more. Stages and set times for each artist will be released closer to the festival this summer, and we’ll have them all on our Capitol Hill Block Party calendar as soon as they’re announced.
Last December, City Hall said that this year they will be monitoring CHBP's impact on businesses and residents in the Pike/Pine to assess the viability of the festival after employees and residents in the area complained about the negative impact on their businesses and homes.
CHBP will be doing community programming in addition to music, with a CHBP artist panel and Q&A, plus courtyard DJs at Chophouse Row. There are plans to use Cal Anderson Park, where they'll be hosting outdoor yoga, health and wellness activities, as well as the return of 35th North's Battle on the Block Skate Competition, and a Bat N' Rouge fundraising softball game. The festival is pledging to match donations to raise up to $5000 for four of the event's nonprofit partners: Jubilee Women's Center, The Vera Project, Artists for Progress, and Lifelong.
Single day, two day, three day & VIP passes go on sale today at 9 am.
I'm most excited to see Lizzo, who is riding high off two new singles from her upcoming album Cuz I Love You that's out in April. Here she is demonstrating her pure brilliance, talent, and lung capacity on The Tonight Show:
