Oh Lord. It’s Thursday once again, my turn to inform our dear readers about what Dear Leader has fucked up today in DC (or, more likely, the golf course). Lucky me! Let’s get this shit show started, shall we?
Surprise, surprise, Donald is continuing to dismiss Christine Blasey Ford’s allegations against his (ahem, the Federalist Society’s) pick for the Supreme Court. From Deadline:
President Donald Trump is continuing last night’s Twitter support for Judge Brett Kavanaugh this morning, doubling down on his claims earlier that “the country” is standing by the Supreme Court nominee.
Claiming that “the harsh and unfair treatment” of Kavanaugh is “having an incredible upward impact on voters,” Trump tweeted today that the “PEOPLE get it far better than the politicians.”
Unfortunately for the world, he might actually be onto something. From NPR:
Just over a month away from critical elections across the country, the wide Democratic enthusiasm advantage that has defined the 2018 campaign up to this point has disappeared, according to a new NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist poll.
In July, there was a 10-point gap between the number of Democrats and Republicans saying the November elections were “very important.” Now, that is down to 2 points, a statistical tie.
In addition to being a terrible president, Donald is also a pretty awful husband. From Vox:
While Melania was visiting Malawi on Thursday, a reporter with Bloomberg News tweeted that two people standing on the side of the road within view of her motorcade held signs declaring that the southeastern African nation was “not a shithole” country, in reference to reports of President Donald Trump’s racist comments earlier this year.
Another person held up a sign that that read “Melania Me Too,” apparently referencing the #MeToo movement that’s galvanized the United States over the last year — and resurfaced sexual misconduct allegations against President Trump.
The only good news in Trumplandia: No one wants to go to his hotels, as per the Washington Post:
As a private company, the Trump Organization says little about its financial ups and downs. But The Washington Post obtained details from two of President Trump’s landmark properties — his luxury hotels in Chicago and Manhattan — from small-time investors such as Roberts, who get details that the public does not.
Those investors — and internal documents they provided — showed that revenue at both properties dropped noticeably as Trump’s political career took off. The decreases have stirred tensions in the buildings and left many investors worried that the Trump brand may be curdling in the liberal cities where Trump built much of his empire.
And we’re back to hating the FBI again. Time to update the spreadsheet, folks! From the New Statesman:
Senator Jeff Merkley, a Democrat, tweeted on Thursday morning: “I read the FBI report. This whole thing is a sham. This stunted, strangled investigation was designed to provide cover, not to provide the truth.” His colleague, Senator Bob Menendez, was more blunt: “if that’s an investigation, it’s a bullshit investigation,” he tweeted.
They’re right. And the review gives cover to the three potentially wavering Republican senators whose votes will be key to confirming Kavanaugh: Lisa Murkowsky, Jeff Flake, and Susan Collins. Whether any of them will find their conscience in time for Saturday’s vote is yet to be seen; none of them have definitively stated which way they will vote yet, and anything can happen in modern American politics.
And, if you haven’t already, load a bong and read the New York Times‘ blockbuster report on where Trump really made his millions (spoiler alert: It was his daddy.)
This is the 622nd day of this nightmare. Only 838 days left.
