The Blair Witch Project: Film Screening and Q&A
Oct 11

Even if you’re not a horror fan, you undoubtedly know The Blair Witch Project, thanks to its prescient marketing hoax campaign, which leveraged the early internet to blur the boundaries of fact and fiction. The 1999 low-budget sleeper hit, which was primarily shot over the course of eight days, takes the form of a found-footage pseudo-documentary and famously listed its actors as “deceased” or “missing.” It’s not just a stunt, though: The film is genuinely haunting and understands that the unseen is more terrifying than the most gruesome monster special effects could ever conjure. This special screening at the 5th Avenue Theatre is an opportunity to see it in all its unsettling glory on the big screen, followed by a Q&A session with original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams (all three alive and well). (5th Avenue Theatre, 7:30 pm, all ages) JULIANNE BELL

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Original Cast Spooktacular! With Patricia Quinn
Oct 15

I will never forget the first time I saw Tim Curry as Dr. Frank N. Furter step out of the elevator singing “Sweet Transvestite” in fishnets and a sequin corset. I was 13, at the Admiral Theater’s monthly midnight screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and I felt deeply confused and excited by my first crush that existed beyond gender. This, my friends, is the bi experience. As the years have passed and monthly screenings diminish, I fear that teenagers are not being exposed to the magic of Rocky Horror. Take this opportunity to introduce the virgins in your life (in RHPS speak, that’s someone who’s never seen the film) to absolute pleasure with a special appearance from Magenta herself, Patricia Quinn. Mourning Sickness: ‘Elvira: Mistress of the Dark’
Oct 24
Until recently, I had never seen Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, but rest assured I am making up for lost time. The 1988 cult classic revolves around everyone’s favorite goth horror hostess, Elvira (played by the iconic Cassandra Gay Peterson), who discovers her great-aunt Morgana bequeathed her a crumbling mansion in a small-minded town named Fallwell (likely a reference to conservative televangelist Jerry Falwell). The result is a delightful fish-out-of-water story, featuring relentless innuendos, a pink-dyed poodle named Gonk, a himbo love interest, a villain named Chastity Pariah, Tic Tac pie, and a bacchanalian picnic scene. This film was made in a lab for the gays—the slut-shaming and moral panic of the townspeople; Elvira’s fabulous drag; the film’s dedication to Peterson’s late best friend and makeup artist Robert Allen Redding, who died of AIDS; and of course, the fact that Peterson herself is sexually fluid and has been living her best queer life in Portland with her partner of 24 years, Teresa “T” Wierson. Who better to present this campy masterpiece than local queen Monday Mourning? (Northwest Film Forum, 8 pm, all ages) JULIANNE BELL
