So last night I’m rereading Susan Sontag’s essay “In Plato’s Cave” from the ’70s when this stuck out at me:

Recently, photography has become almost as widely practiced an amusement as sex and dancing.

I’m thinking that thirty years later, sex and dancing barely hold a candle to picture-taking.

Amirite? (And what is the meaning of this?? Should we form a counterrevolution of sex and dancing?)

Data must be collected.

What do you do more?

  1. That’s a tough one.

Sex is first, but photography is a very close second. (I’m also taking into account the amount of time I spend thinking about/planning each of these activities).

  2. At first I thought it said “Sex, Dancing, or Pornography”. Photography? Yeah, it’s cool and everybody does it, but the prospect of free photography ain’t what made the internet famous.

  3. Just because you see photography happening more than you see sex happening doesn’t mean it’s more popular.

I think photography might be more popular amongst teens, though….as long as you’re including phone/web cams.

  4. I take a LOT of photos and I go dancing a couple times a month, but I’d say I spend more time having sex if you include all the fooling around and foreplay as well as the actual act of screwing. The advantage of being over 50 is having sex take longer.

  5. if I had sex as many times as I’ve taken photographs over the past few years I’d be dead. If I could only get someone to sleep with me (without having to pay for it)… I think I’ll go cry now…

  6. I love sex and I love dancing, but they’ve both got a time and a place. On the other hand, I’ve always got one camera or another with me, and I need very little excuse to whip it out.
