Dan Savage says keeping company with a lady of the evening is perfectly acceptable, and may even prevent you from going on an unspeakable murder spree.

However, in Nashville and 50 other places across the country—including Seattle—if you get caught soliciting a prostitute, you might end up in John School, where they try to change your ways.

Set in a church in Nashville, Tennessee, the John School is led by former prostitutes, health experts, psychologists and law enforcement officers who talk to—and at times berate—the men about the risks of hiring a prostitute.

Meanwhile, advocates for sex workers say the scolding is ineffective as a deterrent and doesn’t address the johns who get violent.

Does John School work? Who knows?

Nashville officials said they haven’t tracked recidivism rates in their city, but the school’s program director said it’s probably deterring a third of the offenders in each class.

Here’s a post about John School in Seattle.

  1. That is fucking stupid. Prostitution is clearly normal adult sexual behavior. And to force men to be berated by some self righteous cop or preacher is typical for a country that forces some ridiculous religious crap on it’s citizens. I swear, there are those who would still be burning witches if reason didn’t prevail. And talk about not having your priorities in order. A total waste of resources.

  2. Didn’t some of these men get arrested because they sought out a prostitute to berate and belittle them? Isn’t this kind of counter productive? I wonder what Mistress Matisse thinks…

    The Gospel according to Dan.
With links to the Holy Word of Dan.
The whole Cult of Personality that is Slog is getting to a new level of creepy.

Not so…here’s a story about former sex worker/one local advocate. She teaches John School and was successful in getting the city to fund it:

AND the major group working on these issues is called SAGE, also founded by a former sex worker created John School:

  5. @2 You’re silly. Men seek out blow jobs or fucks. Men who seek punishment make up a small fraction. Probably the same number of women who seek men to abuse them.

  6. Even in the first fucking paragraph of the linked article it’s shown why prostitutes are needed.

One man in the John school was in a wheelchair.

Hey, I’m sure plenty of wheelchair bound guys are getting laid, but unless they’re also drop dead gorgeous or filthy rich (or both), I rather doubt the ladies are gonna be throwing themselves at their cocks.

People with disabilities have it rough enough already. Let em see the occasional hooker for fucks sake, and leave them the fuck alone.

  7. Nashville is the worst. Churches on every fucking street corner – and baby, you better belong to one of them (or act like you do). I know. I was raised there, but caught the first ride out as soon as I was old enough. That was many years ago, but some things never change.

I’d be opposed to John School on the basis that it shouldn’t have to exist. Get women off the streets where they are indeed in danger and exploited, and allow them to work (if they choose to do so) in a safe and well-maintained “salon.” Clients would go to them instead of having to place themselves at the peril of the streets. I suppose these guys were after the street stuff, but would they have been so if they had had an alternative?

Of course, all of this is way to progressive for Tennessee where sex (unless it is ordained by God) is sinful and where one thanks Jesus for a mind-blowing orgasm.
