Former television news anchor and current King County Executive candidate Susan Hutchison’s campaign has altered its language in the last two weeks, and has taken to calling her opponent Dow Constantine by the curiously Mao-esque moniker of “Chairman Constantine.”
Hutchison started it in a recent KUOW interview, where she tried to pretend that she was challenging Constantine to a series of debates they had already agreed upon. Her campaign manager, the carpetbagging Jordan McCarren, then continued it in a recent fundraising appeal to supporters where he raised the specter of special interests, continued the canard that her KUOW issue was a challenge, and purported to be a Husky fan.
Technically, the position Constantine presently holds is King County Council chair. People stopped using the title “chairman” sometime after the Mad Men era. So, in a way, she is accurate. Constantine is usually called Councilmember Constantine or King County Council Chair Constantine. Or, if you insist on being old fashioned, King County Council Chairman Constantine. All those words matter. Instead, Hutchison’s tack is essentially the nonpartisan way of calling him a member of the “Democrat Party.”
But no, Hutchison’s certainly not a partisan, fear-mongering Republican. No way.

Crack an AP Stylebook, junior: Chairman or chairwoman is still in VERY wide use.
It’s vastly more accurate, if we’re measuring on that scale, than calling someone a piece of furniture (County Council chair).
Mr. Christ, I am very aware of an AP style book. It stresses that one should acknowledge the full title. Ex: King County Council Chair Down Constantine. AP also stresses appropriate local usage, which in King County is “chair” and not “chairman.”
Dan and the Stranger crew have baited socialists non stop for many years. Can’t count the times…..
So, apparently, Susan is just another closet Republican who thinks the left are fair game ….
Red Daddy
You keep mentioning Jordan McCarren (sexy/grotesque). Jordan’s previous good works include attempting to ensure Jesus Hick now fox news host/”analyst” Mike Huckabee’s win of the republican nom. Repeat, Jordan hot, but gross,, like fucking a piece of wet toast.
Congratulations, Bryan-
you are rapidly displacing Dom as the Jackass of Record on Slog…
you managed to spin a couple of items of meaningless trivia into four graphs of boring drivel.
Carpetbagging IS a serious transgression-
is Dan Savage from Seattle?

AP style book states that the full title is to be used in the first reference, and that thereafter the abbreviated title is to be used.
Please cite references to back your assertion that “chair” and not “chairman” is the “appropriate” King County usage.
Remember, sneaky unpatriotic neocons like Susan Hutchinson are always trying to send subliminal messages to their Talibangelist brethren while pretending not to be doing so.
Lying. That’s what they’re good at.
And what God hates.
that’s Republic Party to you.
Speaking of right-wing antics, it looks like Hutchison will be speaking at a “tea party” later this month: http://shorelinecaucus.com/?p=420.
subliminal.
instead of the ham-fisted demagogic paranoid fabricated deluded mind-numbingly monotonous shit slog writers vomit up…
Will, how very silly.
Who the hell in King County does not know Dow is a flaming lefty Democrat, progressive, activist and a long way from any Republican?
She is trying a strategy which will not work. In voting for Dow we know EXACTLY who we are getting.
Her weak shit is destined to fail at the ballot box. Some consultants are going to make a killing trying to pull a ruse that will not work.
Approve Ref. 71 and vote for Dow …. you bet, the combo of choice.
@ 6) That’s Chairman Jackass of Record to you.

a thousand apologies.
i’m referencing an old ap stylebook…
I love the internet. It’s the only place that jackasses and assholes can get along with each other so civilly.
@9 for the insightful win.
Bryan @ 2:
You’re telling us, presumably with a straight face, what is “appropriate usage” in King County? Seriously?
Chairman Dao.
As long as we’re calling out errors, shouldn’t it be “Huskies fan”? Or has Susan suddenly put on enough weight to be considered a “Husky fan”?
At present.
perhaps she can just call him ‘runner-up’ since that is where the polls put him…
