Eden Hill Provisions, a more casual, family-friendly spinoff of Maximillian Petty's acclaimed Eden Hill, opens in Queen Anne today. Credit: Eden Hill Provisions

This week brings delicacies such as kettle corn Brussels sprouts from chef Maximillian Petty’s new family-friendly Eden Hill Provisions in Queen Anne, pork belly “porkstrami” sandwiches from the new West Seattle barbecue destination Lady Jaye, cider slushies from Locust Cider in Post Alley, and chewy, hand-pulled biang-biang noodles from Xi’an Noodles in Westlake. Read on to learn where to find all of those, plus more exciting news, like the revival of Capitol Hill’s beloved Bauhaus.

OPENINGS
Eden Hill Provisions
According to a press release, acclaimed chef Maximillian Petty, who has garnered raves for his inventive dishes like foie gras “cake batter” and crispy pig head “candy bars” at his eccentric, upscale Queen Anne restaurant Eden Hill, will open a new, more casual spinoff in the former space of the recently closed Cupcake Royale today, September 20. The new space is family-friendly and features modernized French and American favorites sourced from the nearby Queen Anne Farmers Market. In keeping with Petty’s trademark whimsy, dishes include kettle corn Brussels sprouts, cauliflower “chilaquiles,” braised beef brisket hash with duck fat tater tots, and the “Big Max,” Eden Hill’s luxe version of a Big Mac with three-week dry-aged chuck ground beef, bacon, lettuce, cheddar, and a secret citrus sauce on challah bread. Plus, diners can shop from a retail section with take-home bottles of wine and to-go portions of Petty’s famous foie gras cake batter.

Lady Jaye
This new cocktail bar and smokehouse, which opened in West Seattle on September 18, is brought to you by a team who previously spent time at Radiator Whiskey and White Swan Public House. A gigantic applewood smoker (affectionately dubbed “Cletus”) churns out mountains of succulent smoked meats, such as pork belly “porkstrami” sandwiches, smoked turkey sandwiches, and slow-roasted brisket. Drinks include craft cocktails, beer, wine, and hard seltzer.

OTHER FOOD NEWS
Bauhaus is back, baby
And now for some good news: The coffee shop Bauhaus, which opened in 1993 and was a much-adored neighborhood fixture in Green Lake, Ballard, and Capitol Hill until its untimely demise in 2015, is set to open a location in the former space of Capitol Hill’s recently closed Down Pour Coffee by the end of the month. (The Ballard shop re-opened in 2016, and was the only remaining location…until now.) The new, smaller space will retain some of the cozy, lived-in charm of the original, with books, espresso and coffee, and pastries from local La Toscanella Bakery, but will also add some new features, like beer, wine, and a bottle shop.

Oma Bap coming soon to Hugo House
It looks like Hugo House, Capitol Hill’s hub for writing class, readings, and other literary happenings, won’t have to wait much longer for a new dining option: Oma Bap, a contemporary fast-casual Korean restaurant with a location in the Central District, plans to open its second location inside the building’s restaurant suite in early October. Diners can look forward to customizable bibimbap-style bowls, with a base of rice, noodles, or salad and options for vegetables, meat, and toppings.

James Beard Awards announce change
According to a press release, the James Beard Foundation has reshaped the regions within which it awards its prestigious annual James Beard Awards (often called the Oscars of the food world) for restaurants and chefs. Now, starting in 2020, the “Northwest and Pacific” region will include Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon, and Washington (before that, Washington was in the “Northwest” region with Alaska, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming—the latter two states will move to a newly created “Mountain” category, along with Colorado, Idaho, and Utah). The change means the foundation will have 12 regions instead of just 10, allowing them to recognize 40 more restaurants per year. If you want to check out some James Beard-recognized chefs and mixologists, the James Beard: Taste America tour coming to Seattle for its annual gala dinner to Seattle on October 4, with chefs like Rachel Yang of Joule and Revel and visiting all-star chef Kwame Onwuachi, who has won acclaim for his Washington, DC, restaurant Kith/Kin and whose recently published memoir, Notes from a Young Black Chef, is slated to be adapted into an A24-produced film starring Lakeith Stanfield.

D’ La Santa expanding
Capitol Hill’s family-owned Mexican restaurant D’ La Santa is getting an update, with a new bar and patio on which to sip its signature oversized margaritas. The expansion will also include the addition of new menu items, including cocktails and green tortillas hand-made with poblano peppers.

Teatro ZinZanni announces new upcoming restaurant
Teatro ZinZanni, Woodinville’s circus/cabaret dealing in dinner-theater hijinks, has announced it will open a new restaurant and bar called the Wheelhouse in mid-October. The restaurant will serve up “farm-to-table gastropub” fare to showgoers, as well as beer on tap and local wine and spirits, and joins local wineries DeLille Cellars and Sparkman Cellars, which are moving into the Hollywood Station building that houses Teatro ZinZanni.
