3. What’s weird about the whole trans care for minors debate is at what point are minors mature enough to be able to make these types of decisions? Another bill has been proposed this session, HB 1455, which raises the minimum age to get married to 18. So on one hand you have the legislature saying minors are not mature enough to make a contractual commitment (marriage) that can be undone but they are mature enough to make permanent medical care decisions that will have life altering impacts. It’s inconsistent so it gives the appearance its idealogically driven.

There were a number of incidents in Iraq War II (Electric Boogaloo) where US forces used aerial bombs to destroy a building immediately next to a hospital while doing minimal or no damage to the hospital itself. See, for example, this interview on This American Life where an American selecting targets talks about how they chose bombs and settings so that a hospital across the street from the target only had a few broken windows. Note that they used 2000 lb bombs to demolish the target.

    “Alex Blumberg A lot of times when the collateral damage assessment came back too high, they would try to get it lowered. For example, a strike Marc planned early on in the invasion. An Iraqi division was holed up in a big, multi-building convention center in Baghdad. Which unfortunately, was right across the street from a hospital.

    Marc Garlasco: Now because of the amount of guys there and the construction of the buildings, we knew that they needed to use 2,000 pound bombs. The problem with this is a 2,000 pound bomb has a very large, destructive radius. And it certainly would have enveloped the hospital. But there are things that you can do, even when you’re dropping large munitions, to reduce civilian casualties. One of those is to change the angle of attack.

    And so imagine if you will, a plane is coming in and drops bombs at such an angle that they actually push the debris away from the direction of the hospital. Additionally, you put a time delayed fuse on it. And in this case, I think it was maybe five nano seconds, which is an incredibly short period of time, but it’s enough that allows the bomb to bury itself in the ground. And what this does is, it basically lets the building implode. And it falls in upon itself and contains a lot of that blast and fragmentation damage that would come out and injure civilians, or destroy some of the hospital. And then additionally, you’re using a penetrating warhead, so it’s burying into the ground. So you’re not just willy-nilly dropping bombs like in the second world war.

    And when I got there I went into the hospital and spoke to the director and all the people in there. And you know, nothing worse than a few broken windows. And I was like, wow, this is great. We did a really good job on this one.”

    Did you bother to read 32? Because that shows that it absolutely is feasible. The expert they are quoting in that article is a person who designated targets for the US military in Iraq II and then went to work for Human Rights Watch. Clearly an outside military expert since they literally did the job. That person made it very clear that it is possible to target major facilities immediately next to hospitals and do only cosmetic damage to the hospital itself.

    Again, it’s possible. If IDF cares to. But they’re not.

17. @38 Care to provide sourcing for those assertions about how the IDF conducts the war? You say you don’t think that they are using long-term intel, that they’re just reacting to a just-in intelligence report. But you’re not providing any sources.

    I have a few comments to your broader point.
    
    It would take approximately 5 people to maintain a list of areas that Israel has said are safe areas for civilians and redline those from bombing. They don’t do that since they’re continuing to bomb the zones they themselves described as safe zones. Yes, there are probably members of Hamas in those safe areas. But there are certainly plenty of others outside of them that they could target, or they could require more significant approvals for bombing within safe zones. That’s just a matter of maintaining reasonable PR with the people who are supplying your weapons. It’s a bad look to bomb safe zones.

    I do note that you changed the goalposts. Your statement @23 was that the large bombs necessary for destroying tunnels will destroy neighboring blocks. When proven wrong, now you go on about feasibility. I’m not sure why we’d trust your confident assertion on feasibility when your confident assertion about destructive radius was simply wrong.

    But let’s leave that aside. My complaint is actually less about the bombs than about the rules of engagement on the part of the infantry. I know I keep bringing up the shootings at the convent, but that’s because it illustrates the problem directly. Israeli snipers either (a) didn’t know who they were shooting at or (b) didn’t care. If they didn’t know, they shouldn’t have shot. If they didn’t care, well, that’s the problem. The convent is well mapped. If the IDF snipers are firing into the convent, then they’re clearly just shooting anything that moves in their field of fire. Not a great look when you’re trying to claim that this military operation has greater respect for human life than any other in history.

    The incident with the hostages shot by Israeli troops is also illuminating. the investigation report came out a little bit ago, and it showed that the first two escaped hostages were shot, then the captain called a cease fire, then a soldier who didn’t hear the order shot the third man. The soldiers involved were not disciplined, because there was “no malice” in the shooting. I kind of get that, fog of war, mistakes happen, and all that.

    But let’s look at what that means the rules of engagement are for Israeli soldiers. The escaped hostages were carrying a white flag, were yelling in Hebrew, and were not wearing shirts. They were not carrying weapons. The not wearing shirts is important because it makes it clear that none of them had suicide vests on. That means that the rules of engagement are that Israeli soldiers are effectively to shoot anyone moving, without making any effort to determine if they are civilians or not, armed or not. No warning shots. That’s how you end up shooting up a convent. And shooting schoolgirls. And shooting escaped hostages. Because you shoot to kill the first time and every time, and maybe some questions get asked later if one of those people shot turns out to be Israeli.

    I just saw a presentation on gun safety by a veteran. He made a big point about how US servicemembers are trained that shooting to kill is the last resort and follows an escalation of force (unless someone is pointing a gun at them). One wonders how much lower the Gaza body count would be if the IDF followed similar approaches.

They talked about how corrupt and deviated (and anti-semitic) much of the organization has become, and I can only agree. As the rabbi said, they need to reboot that software. It’s awful, though, isn’t it, when you can’t put your trust in the UN – the only world congress we have? The organization hasn’t been a complete failure, I don’t mean to suggest that, but look at Cypress. They’re still there after – what? – nearly 60 years.

What’s happening isn’t a genocide, but it is a tragedy, and it will repeat, over and over and over, unless Hamas is stopped. Right now, neither ambulance-blocking protesters in Seattle nor UN Women nor anyone else outside of the IDF is either doing or proposing doing anything to stop Hamas. So who doesn’t care about stopping war here?

    There is no threshold of death, or proportion of death, that must be reached. It is possible to kill a relatively small number of people, but still commit an act of genocide.

    We should approach this question humbly, because we — Americans, the West — have repeatedly shown that we are good at recognizing genocide only in retrospect.

    Virtually every cataclysm we now know as genocide, including the Holocaust, was met, first, with doubt and linguistic quibbling until finally — and much too late — a declaration was made.
